Marcus let out a cold, short laugh. "He's been going crazy looking for her? What does he take us for?"
"Marc." Sally's voice sharpened. "Watch what you say."
"The best way to avoid a mess," Marcus said flatly, "is to never make one in the first place. Go back and tell Ashton that Scarlett doesn't need him. Tell him to stay away from her."
Sally gave up on Marcus and turned to me instead, taking my hand firmly. "Letty, if you really can't face Ashton right now, then come back with me. Don't stay here. Marc isn't bonded to anyone, and you still carry the Fuller name. This is K City. People notice things. If the wrong person sees this, think about what it does to both families."
Marcus scoffed. "Family name. Right. You want to talk about reputation now, after everything that's already been done? Are you here to lecture us, or just to shift the blame?"
The words landed hard. Sally went completely still.
