Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12

Chapter 12: Foundations Before Dawn

Li Chen woke before the sky had even begun to pale.

For a brief moment, he lay still on the narrow wooden bed, staring at the low ceiling of his outer disciple quarters. The room was quiet—too quiet. No footsteps outside, no distant chatter from other disciples preparing for training.

Only the faint sound of his own breathing.

Then—

Ding.

A familiar chime echoed softly in his mind.

Li Chen's eyes sharpened instantly.

A translucent blue panel unfolded before his vision, lines of text forming with mechanical precision.

Li Chen blinked.

"…Daily?" he muttered under his breath.

The system replied immediately, voice smooth and faintly amused.

"Congratulations. You've discovered consistency. A revolutionary concept, I know."

Li Chen ignored the jab and sat up slowly, letting his feet touch the cold stone floor.

Daily fitness quests.

His thoughts drifted back to the conversation from the night before—about physical conditioning, about how his body still lagged behind his cultivation. At the time, he'd assumed it was just another one of the system's annoying lectures.

Turns out it wasn't joking.

"So this is what you meant," Li Chen said quietly.

"Among other things," the system replied. "But let's start small. I wouldn't want you collapsing before sunrise. That would be… inconvenient."

Li Chen snorted lightly.

He stood, rolled his shoulders, and stretched his arms. His body still felt sore from yesterday's fights—his ribs ached faintly, and his muscles carried a deep, lingering fatigue. But beneath that soreness was something new.

Strength.

Not overwhelming. Not dramatic.

But real.

He wasted no time.

Dropping to the floor, Li Chen placed his palms flat against the stone tiles and lowered himself into position.

Push-ups.

The first few came easily enough. His arms trembled slightly, but they didn't buckle.

Five.

Six.

By eight, sweat had begun to bead on his forehead. His breathing grew heavier, and his shoulders burned.

By ten, his arms shook violently.

He collapsed onto his back, chest rising and falling as he stared up at the ceiling.

"…I actually did it," he murmured.

The system sniffed. "Astounding. Truly. Someone notify the elders."

Li Chen rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress the faint smile tugging at his lips.

Before, even lifting a pair of stone locks in the training yard had left his arms aching for days. His frail body had been infamous—thin limbs, weak joints, barely able to endure basic conditioning exercises.

Now?

He could feel the difference.

He pushed himself up again.

Squats came next. Twenty of them. His thighs screamed in protest by the fifteenth, muscles burning as if fire had been poured into them. He gritted his teeth and finished all twenty, legs trembling as he steadied himself against the wall.

Sit-ups followed. Thirty.

By the time he finished the last one, sweat soaked his robe, and his breathing echoed loudly in the small room.

Finally—

Horse stance.

Li Chen spread his feet, lowered his center of gravity, and bent his knees until his thighs were nearly parallel to the floor. His back straightened instinctively, fists clenched at his sides.

The position was brutal.

Within seconds, his legs began to shake. His thighs burned. His lower back ached.

One minute passed.

His jaw tightened.

Another thirty seconds.

Pain crawled up his spine.

By the final stretch, his vision blurred slightly, and his legs felt like they might give out at any moment.

But he held.

When the final second ticked by, Li Chen collapsed onto the floor with a dull thud, chest heaving.

Ding.

[Daily Fitness Quest Completed]

All objectives achieved.

Reward Granted:

+50 XP

---

Warmth flowed through his body, subtle but unmistakable. The fatigue didn't vanish—but it eased, dulling just enough for him to breathe comfortably again.

Another panel slid open.

---

Name: Li Chen

Level: 4

XP: 175 / 200

Cultivation Plane: Early Mortal Realm

Strength: 8

Agility: 7

Endurance: 10

Intelligence: 2

Health: 90/ 100

---

Li Chen stared at the stats for a long moment.

"…That intelligence value really isn't moving, is it?"

The system scoffed. "I'm shocked you noticed."

Li Chen sighed. "Why is it still so low?"

"Because," the system replied dryly, "you have the mental depth of a brick. And no, punching things won't fix that."

Li Chen frowned. "Zhao Ming's intelligence was higher than mine."

"Oh, absolutely," the system said cheerfully. "Congratulations. You're physically sturdier than him, but intellectually? You're still losing."

The name made Li Chen's expression darken.

Zhao Ming.

The sneers. The fight. The system notifications. The loot.

Nothing had happened yet—but silence didn't mean safety.

No one had confronted him. No rumors had reached his ears. But he knew the sect well enough to understand how things worked.

Whispers would spread.

Slowly. Quietly.

Especially among the outer disciples.

"Will he come after me?" Li Chen asked quietly.

The system paused for half a breath. "Statistically? Yes. Eventually."

Li Chen exhaled.

"…How do I raise my intelligence?"

The system answered immediately. "Read."

Li Chen blinked. "That's it?"

"Yes," the system replied flatly. "Unless you plan to headbutt enlightenment into your skull."

Li Chen grimaced. "You could've phrased that better."

"I could," the system agreed. "But I didn't."

They lapsed into silence for a moment.

Then Li Chen stood, washed his face with cold water from the basin, and changed into clean robes. His movements were steady, his expression calm—more controlled than it had ever been.

As he tied his sash, he paused.

"…I'm changing, aren't I?" he murmured.

The system responded lightly. "Don't flatter yourself. You're still weak."

Li Chen smirked faintly. "But not useless."

"…Annoyingly accurate."

With that, Li Chen stepped out of his quarters, the sky just beginning to lighten in the distance.

The day had not yet begun.

But his foundation already had.
