Chapter 11 — Silent Accumulation
The clearing was quiet.
Too quiet.
Li Chen stood there for several breaths, chest rising and falling, sweat trickling down his back as the adrenaline slowly bled out of his system. His knuckles throbbed. His ribs ached. Somewhere near his jaw, a dull pulse reminded him he'd taken a solid hit earlier.
But he was still standing.
Zhao Ming wasn't.
The once-haughty outer disciple lay half-slumped against a tree root, breathing shallowly, his robe torn and dust-stained. His lackeys were scattered even worse—one unconscious, the others barely conscious and groaning softly.
Li Chen stared at them, his expression carefully blank.
Inside, however, his thoughts were anything but calm.
I actually did it.
Not beasts.
Not illusions in a void.
Not some theoretical future.
A fellow cultivator. One stronger than him—on paper.
Before the thought could spiral further, the familiar blue light flared again.
---
[System Prompt]
Loot defeated targets?
Options:
• Yes
• Yes (Automatically)
---
Li Chen's mouth twitched.
"…You really have no shame, do you?" he muttered inwardly.
The system replied smoothly, "On the contrary. This is efficiency. You defeated them. Their belongings are now unclaimed resources. Leaving them would be wasteful."
He hesitated for half a second.
Then sighed.
"…Automatic."
---
The system didn't waste time.
A series of notifications flowed across his vision, clean and clinical.
---
[Loot Acquired]
• Low-grade Spirit Stones × 3
• Copper coins × 47
• Worn Qi-Reinforcing Talisman (Cracked)
• Low Grade Healing Pill × 1
[Loot Acquired — Zhao Ming]
• Low-grade Spirit Stones × 8
• Silver coins × 3
• Spirit Herb Pouch (Sealed)
• Jade Slip — Azure Flow Tempering Method (Fragment)
---
Li Chen's breath hitched.
"…That's—"
"A respectable haul," the system finished smugly. "As expected from someone with a slightly inflated sense of importance."
His gaze lingered on the jade slip.
Cultivation methods were tightly controlled within the sect. Outer disciples rarely received anything beyond the most basic circulation manuals—and even then, only incomplete versions.
Zhao Ming having one, even a fragment, said a lot.
Family backing really does matter.
Li Chen carefully tucked the items away, movements practiced despite the novelty. He made sure the Violet Spirit Plum was still hidden securely within his robe, its presence faint but reassuring.
Only after everything was secured did he finally allow himself to relax—just a little.
And that was when the weight of reality came crashing back in.
This happened… inside the herb garden.
He scanned the surroundings sharply.
The outer herb garden was large, sprawling, and filled with winding paths between herb plots—but it wasn't isolated. Other disciples were still working further off, some pretending very hard not to look in his direction.
Whispers would spread.
They always did.
Zhao Ming wouldn't die from this. Neither would his lackeys. But humiliation lingered far longer than bruises, and families didn't forget slights easily.
Li Chen exhaled slowly.
Trouble is coming.
The system hummed, almost pleased. "Congratulations. You've successfully offended a family with resources. Character development achieved."
"…That's not comforting."
"It's realistic."
He ignored it and crouched briefly, retrieving his basket of herbs. Thankfully, it hadn't overturned during the fight. The contents weren't impressive—mostly low-grade herbs, with a few decent ones mixed in—but they were enough to turn in.
Enough to maintain appearances.
He cast one last glance at Zhao Ming, who stirred faintly, eyes fluttering open just enough to glare weakly at him.
Li Chen met his gaze calmly.
No gloating.
No threat.
Just quiet acknowledgment.
Then he turned and left.
---
The Task Hall buzzed with its usual low-level chaos.
Outer disciples came and went, some turning in herbs, others collecting task slips or arguing over contribution points. The air smelled faintly of dried plants, ink, and sweat.
Li Chen joined the queue without incident.
A few eyes followed him.
Some curious.
Some dismissive.
When it was his turn, an elderly attendant barely glanced at him, mechanically inspecting the herbs before marking his contribution.
"Accepted," the man grunted. "Three copper coins."
The coins clinked softly into Li Chen's palm.
Three copper coins.
Before today, that would've meant a decent meal. Maybe rice with actual flavor. A thin strip of dried meat if he was lucky.
Now?
Li Chen closed his fingers around the coins, expression unchanged.
"…Thank you."
He stepped aside, making room for the next disciple.
As he exited the Task Hall, the system spoke again.
"Observation: your reaction speed has improved. Emotional restraint detected. Growth not solely limited to numerical stats."
Li Chen blinked.
"…You analyze that too?"
"Of course," the system replied. "Power without composure is inefficient."
For once, Li Chen didn't argue.
---
By the time he returned to his quarters, the sun had dipped lower, casting long shadows across the outer mountain. His small room greeted him with its usual austerity—thin bedding, cracked table, and a faint draft slipping through the wooden walls.
He shut the door and leaned against it, finally letting his shoulders drop.
Only then did he allow himself a quiet, breathless laugh.
"I survived," he murmured.
Not just survived.
I advanced.
The system responded mildly, "Indeed. Though I'd advise against repeating today's events too frequently. Your current durability is… lacking."
Li Chen snorted. "Noted."
He moved to sit cross-legged on the bed, withdrawing the Violet Spirit Plum from his robe. Even concealed, the fruit radiated vitality, its faint purple sheen pulsing softly.
His heartbeat quickened.
"Status check," he whispered inwardly.
---

---
Two skill points.
A cultivation fragment.
A rare spirit fruit.
And enemies who now knew his name.
Li Chen closed his eyes, a slow smile forming.
"Looks like," he murmured, "things are finally moving."
The system replied quietly, almost approvingly:
"Welcome to the real path of cultivation."
---
Li Chen sat cross-legged on his narrow bed, the door firmly shut, the faint sounds of the outer sect fading into the background.
Only then did he allow himself to properly take stock.
"Open inventory," he murmured inwardly.
The blue light shimmered, and the looted items reappeared one by one, neatly categorized.
Spirit stones.
Coins.
A cracked talisman.
A healing pill.
A fragmentary cultivation manual.
Li Chen's eyes lingered briefly on the lesser items.
"These… I don't need most of them," he said after a moment of thought. "I can sell the talisman, the spirit stones, even the pill. Coins are more flexible right now."
The system responded immediately, tone approving but irritatingly smug.
"A sensible decision. Hoarding unnecessary items at your stage would only slow your development. Liquid assets increase adaptability."
"…You could've just said you agree."
"I did. With better phrasing."
Li Chen ignored it and finalized the decision.
Everything had to go—except the coins already in his possession and the jade slip containing the Azure Flow Tempering Method fragment.
That, he would keep.
Cultivation manuals were priceless. Even fragments could provide insight, comparison, or emergency guidance.
Only after everything else faded from the panel did Li Chen's gaze return to the object that mattered most.
The Violet Spirit Plum.
Even resting quietly in his palm, it radiated vitality. A faint purple glow pulsed beneath its skin, and a rich fragrance filled the room, making his Qi stir restlessly within his meridians.
"Absorb," Li Chen said softly.
He hesitated, then added, "Safely."
The system replied coolly, "Naturally. Try not to explode. That would complicate future projections."
Before he could retort, the fruit dissolved into strands of light.
The purple glow surged into his palm, flowing up his arm like warm liquid before dispersing throughout his body. His meridians burned—no, expanded—as the energy flooded in.
Li Chen sucked in a sharp breath.
It wasn't painful.
It was overwhelming.
His heart pounded as Qi circulated faster and smoother than ever before, pushing impurities outward. His skin prickled as faint gray wisps seeped from his pores, leaving behind a strange lightness.
---
[System Notification]
High-grade medicinal energy absorbed.
XP +120
Minor body tempering achieved.
---
Li Chen exhaled slowly, sweat dripping from his chin.
"…That was worth it."
"Obviously," the system replied. "You may thank yourself later for not handing it over to Zhao Ming."
Li Chen snorted.
As his breathing steadied, another thought surfaced.
"About the skill points," he said. "You mentioned I have two."
"Yes."
"How do they work exactly?"
The system's tone shifted into something dangerously close to condescension.
"Amazingly, you've asked a reasonable question."
A new panel slid open.
---
[Skill Point Allocation]
Available Points: 2
• Strength
• Agility
• Endurance
• Intelligence
Allocate points to permanently enhance base attributes.
Note: Over-reliance without physical conditioning may result in bodily strain.
---
"So I can just… increase my stats?" Li Chen asked, incredulous.
"Yes. Temporarily bypassing years of gradual conditioning. You're welcome."
Li Chen frowned thoughtfully.
Zhao Ming's strength replayed vividly in his mind—the crushing pressure, the overwhelming blows.
"I'm still weak," he said quietly. "If I can't overpower them, then I need to avoid getting hit."
His decision came quickly.
"One point to Strength. One to Agility."
The panel flashed.
---
Strength: 7 → 8
Agility: 6 → 7
---
A subtle warmth spread through his muscles, like his body had been tuned slightly tighter.
Li Chen flexed his fingers, then blinked. "That's… it?"
"For now," the system replied. "However, do not assume this method is limitless. Attribute growth must be supported by physical exertion. Otherwise—"
"—my body won't keep up," Li Chen finished slowly.
The realization struck him suddenly.
"If my body changes… what kind of work are you talking about?"
The system paused.
Then said pleasantly, "You'll find out tomorrow."
Li Chen felt a chill crawl up his spine. "…That's not ominous at all."
Before he could press further, the system cut him off.
"More importantly," it said, "your use of Shadow Step was inefficient."
Li Chen frowned. "I dodged. I countered. I survived."
"Yes," the system agreed. "Instinctively. Poorly. But with excellent timing."
"…That's contradictory."
"It's accurate."
Li Chen clenched his jaw. "Then how do I improve it?"
Silence.
Then—
"Look at your panel."
Before he could respond, the air beside him shimmered.
A translucent, humanoid figure formed—featureless, glowing faintly blue. It moved without sound, its body blurring as it demonstrated Shadow Step with breathtaking precision.
Each step was economical. Each shift of weight deliberate.
Li Chen's eyes widened.
"So that's how it's supposed to look…"
"Observe," the system instructed coldly. "Then imitate."
Li Chen stood.
And practiced.
Again.
And again.
And again.
His room filled with the sound of hurried breathing and scuffing feet. He stumbled, corrected, pushed harder. Sweat soaked his robe. His legs burned. His Qi circulation faltered—then stabilized.
Hours passed unnoticed.
Finally, his knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the bed, chest heaving.
Before darkness could claim him, the system chimed one last time.
---
[Skill Training Complete]
Shadow Step Proficiency increased.
Level 1 → Level 2
---
Li Chen stared at the ceiling, stunned.
"So… just using it makes it better?"
"Yes," the system replied. "Repeated execution refines efficiency. Congratulations. You've discovered practice."
"…You're insufferable."
"And you're improving."
A beat passed.
Then Li Chen chuckled softly, exhaustion finally overtaking him.
"…Good night."
"Rest well," the system said. "Tomorrow will be unpleasant."
Li Chen groaned, rolled onto his side—
—and fell asleep smiling.
