Chapter 13 - CHAPTER 13 — The One Who Remembers Her

The clearing fell silent.

The hooded figure stepped fully into the moonlight, silver light pooling around their feet like liquid stardust. Lira's breath caught in her throat.

She knew that face.

Not from this world.

Not from this life.

But from the one she had lost.

"Astra," the figure said again, voice soft but steady. "You're alive."

Lira's knees weakened. "Don't call me that."

The figure's expression softened. "It's your name."

"No," Lira whispered. "My name is Lira."

Kael stepped between them, blade raised. "You , explain who you are. Now."

The figure lifted both hands in a gesture of peace. "My name is Serin. I was Astra's mentor… and her friend."

Lira's heart twisted painfully. "Serin… you were there. At the ChronoGate."

Serin nodded. "I watched you fall. I thought I lost you forever."

Kael's grip tightened on his sword. "She is not Astra. She is Lira."

Serin's gaze flicked to him. "She is both."

Lira flinched.

Kael stepped closer to her, protective. "She doesn't remember everything."

"She will," Serin said. "And she must."

Lira shook her head. "Why? Why bring me here? Why send me back?"

Serin lowered their staff, the silver glow dimming. "Because time is unraveling. Because the collapse of the ChronoGate didn't just destroy your world — it fractured the Veil between worlds."

Lira's pulse quickened. "The Veil…"

Serin nodded. "The boundary between timelines. Between destinies. Between who you were and who you could become."

Kael frowned. "Speak plainly."

Serin met his gaze. "If she doesn't reclaim her memories, this world will fall."

Lira felt the ground tilt beneath her. "Fall? How?"

Serin hesitated — and that hesitation terrified her more than any Shadehound.

"Because the prince has found a way to manipulate the Veil," Serin said. "He seeks to rewrite fate. To reshape the kingdom. To erase anyone who stands in his way."

Kael stiffened. "He's using forbidden magic."

"Yes," Serin said. "And he needs the Starborn to complete the ritual."

Lira's breath hitched. "Me?"

Serin nodded. "Your power is the key. Your soul exists in two timelines. You are the bridge he needs."

Kael stepped closer to Lira, jaw clenched. "He will not touch her."

Serin's eyes softened. "You care for her."

Kael didn't deny it.

Lira felt heat rise to her cheeks, but fear quickly smothered it. "Serin… the Shadehound. It's bound to me."

"I know," Serin said. "I sensed its presence. It carries your scent across the Veil."

Kael growled, "How do we kill it?"

"You don't," Serin said. "Not yet."

Lira's stomach twisted. "Then what do we do?"

Serin lifted their staff. The silver light brightened, swirling around them like mist.

"You go to the cliffs," Serin said. "There, the Veil is thin. There, your memories can return safely."

Kael stepped forward. "And the Shadehound?"

"I will hold it back as long as I can," Serin said. "But it will follow. It always follows."

Lira's voice trembled. "Serin… why me? Why bring me back at all?"

Serin stepped closer, their expression softening with something like grief.

"Because you weren't meant to die," they said. "Because your destiny didn't end in that collapse. Because you are the only one who can mend what was broken."

Lira swallowed hard. "I'm scared."

Serin reached out, placing a gentle hand over her mark. "Good. Fear means you understand the weight of what you carry."

Kael moved instantly, pulling Lira back. "Don't touch her."

Serin lowered their hand, unoffended. "Protect her, Kael. She will need you."

Kael's jaw tightened. "I don't need your permission."

Serin smiled faintly. "No. But she needs your strength."

Lira looked between them — the man who knew her past, and the man who guarded her present.

Her heart felt split between two worlds.

Two lives.

Two truths.

Serin stepped back, raising their staff. "Go. The cliffs await. And Astra—"

Lira flinched at the name.

Serin's voice softened. "Whatever you remember… whatever you become… you are not alone."

The silver light burst outward, forming a shimmering barrier around the clearing.

Kael grabbed Lira's hand. "We move. Now."

Lira nodded, her heart pounding.

As they ran into the forest, the Shadehound's howl tore through the night — furious, wounded, and closer than ever.

And behind them, Serin stood alone in the clearing, staff glowing, ready to face the darkness.
