The moment the Enforcer synergy snapped into place, a grid of shimmering white energy lines erupted around Sevika. She froze mid-stride, her mechanical arm locked in a combat pose, completely detained by the system's law.
Synergy Active: Enforcer (2) Effect: Sevika (Highest Health Enemy) is detained for 4 seconds.
"Four seconds! Go!" Chen roared.
Before the first Shimmer Warrior could capitalize on Sevika's paralysis, a high-velocity round whistled from the Academy spires.
C-C-CRACK!
The skull of the mutant nearest to Chen disintegrated. "She can hit from that far?" Chen marveled, looking up. "The range on that Sheriff's rifle is a joke. She's literally playing from two screens away!"
Then, a voice like rolling thunder shook the pier: "WHO NEEDS A GOOD PUNCH!"
Vi hit the ground in a crouch, her right Atlas Gauntlet hissing as it drew power from the Hex-crystal. Steam vented from the exhaust ports as she wound up her fist, the blue energy intensifying until the air itself began to ripple.
Vault Breaker (Q)!
Vi became a blue blur, her dash tearing a furrow through the stone. She didn't just punch the Shimmer Warriors; she drove through them like a bowling ball through pins. As she reached the center of the pack, she swung a heavy haymaker.
Relentless Force (E)!
A massive, translucent shockwave erupted from the point of impact, passing through the first warrior and shredding the armor of the three behind him. Chen's jaw dropped. The shockwave wasn't just wide—it was massive.
"The Sister synergy!" Chen realized.
Synergy Active: Sisters (Vi & Jinx) Vi: Skill range is doubled. Jinx: Gains 40% Attack Speed for 3 seconds on assists.
Jinx let out a manic howl. With her Switcheroo! Gatling gun spinning, the assist from Vi's shockwave sent her fire rate into a frenzy. The sound of Pow-Pow became a continuous, metallic scream.
"B-B-Bullets!" Vi laughed, sliding into a back-to-back stance with Chen. "Enforcer reinforcements are five minutes out. We just have to hold the gate!"
"We can do this!" Chen shouted, swinging his lamppost in a Decimate arc, catching three mutants on the "blade" edge and watching his health bar tick upward as he healed. "We've got the tanking, we've got the peel, and we've—"
Suddenly, the continuous roar of Jinx's Gatling gun sputtered. Click. Click. Click-click-click.
Silence fell over their sector of the pier. Chen's heart skipped a beat. He slowly turned his head. Jinx was standing there, looking dejected, her shoulders slumped. She held Pow-Pow up, looking at the empty belt.
"Chen..." she whispered, her lower lip trembling. "I ran out of candy."
"..."
"We're screwed," Chen breathed.
This wasn't a game. There was no infinite ammo pool. Jinx had been firing at a 200% increased rate for several minutes; her massive crates of ammunition were now just piles of spent brass.
Without the suppressive lead, the Shimmer Warriors didn't hesitate. The "Super Minions" surged forward. Chen took a massive hammer-fist to the chest, losing 400 HP instantly. He spun his lamp in a desperate Counter Strike, but he was drowning in purple muscle.
"Vi! Retreat! Now!" Chen barked, his Decimate only barely keeping him alive as he scraped the outer ring against the closing circle. "Powder's empty! We can't hold the point!"
Vi threw one last Relentless Force, her knuckles sparking with overuse. "I'm with you! Move it!"
Chen covered the rear, popping his Unbreakable Will to ignore the stuns and slows, while Vi shielded Jinx as they backed toward the Academy bridge. High above, Caitlyn fired her final round, clicking her bolt back to find an empty chamber. She cursed, slinging her rifle and sprinting toward the rendezvous point.
Sevika broke free of her detention just as the trio reached the outer stairs. She snarled, preparing to lead a pursuit, but a cold hand rested on her shoulder.
"No need to chase," Silco said, stepping onto the pier. He looked at the chaos they had wrought. "Secure the gate. Re-inject the warriors. We have the high ground now. Let the Enforcers exhaust themselves against our walls."
Outside the Hexgate tower, the Piltover Guard had arrived in force. Caitlyn took command instantly, her Sheriff's badge glinting under the emergency flares.
"Stop! Do not enter!" she commanded the eager Enforcers. "That tower is a meat grinder. The terrain is too narrow, and their warriors are too fast. We surround and defend! Evacuate the citizens from the surrounding blocks! Bring up the heavy city-defense cannons!"
Chen leaned against a barricade, breathing hard. Caitlyn was right. Sending ordinary men into that tower would be a massacre.
Watching from a nearby balcony, Jayce Talis lowered his binoculars. He had seen the Shimmer Warriors tear through the defenders. He had seen Chen and Vi, despite their power, forced to retreat. And he had seen the bodies of those who hadn't been fast enough.
"Viktor was right about the risk," Jayce whispered, his face hardening. "But Heimerdinger was wrong about the time. We don't have ten years."
He turned and ran toward his workshop. He didn't look for a mining tool this time. He reached for the heavy, unfinished frame of a hammer and the glowing blue Hex-crystal. It was time to build a weapon.
Back on the Bilgewater Zeppelin, Silco watched the Enforcers set up their cannons. He wasn't worried. He turned and knocked on a reinforced iron door in the ship's hold.
"Dr. Mundo?" Silco's voice was smooth, patronizing. "I am your assistant, Silco. There are many... 'patients' outside who are in desperate need of your unique brand of medicine."
Inside the room, a massive purple shadow shifted. A jagged, oversized cleaver scraped against the floor.
"Mundo... go where he pleases!"
