Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — A Body That Changes, A Flame That Waits

Month: Early April

Year: Taishō 13

Age: Akira — 7

Location: Azabu District (outskirts, early-dawn clearing)

Combat Strength: ★★☆☆☆ → ★★½☆☆ (foundation improving)

---

The body always changed first.

Akira realized it at dawn.

The ground was damp from spring rain, cool through the thin soles of his sandals. He stood facing east, wooden practice sword resting at his side, shoulders loose.

He moved.

The motion was familiar—Form One's opening stance—yet the ending felt… off.

Not wrong.

Just short.

Akira stopped.

He exhaled slowly, then repeated the motion, slower this time.

His arm reached the same position as always, but the balance shifted a hair too far forward.

"…Huh."

> "Body proportions altered. Previous motion ratios no longer optimal."

Akira nodded. "I felt that."

> "Recommendation: adjust stance width by three fingers. Reduce shoulder rotation slightly."

He obeyed.

The next repetition flowed better.

Not smoother—steadier.

Akira didn't force more speed. He didn't chase power. He let the movement settle into his changing frame.

Sun Breathing was fire—but fire still needed a hearth.

---

He didn't practice the forms themselves that morning.

Instead, he walked.

Slow steps. Barefoot on damp earth.

He inhaled through his nose.

Let it fill his belly—not chest.

Exhaled quietly.

> "Basic breathing pattern alignment: improved oxygen intake efficiency."

This wasn't Hinokami Kagura.

This was foundation breathing—the kind swordsmen used long before styles had names.

Akira focused on rhythm.

Step.

Breath in.

Pause.

Breath out.

No strain. No heat.

Just control.

---

By mid-morning, Mitsuri found him oiling his sword.

She crouched nearby, hands behind her back, eyes fixed on the blade.

"…Can I ask something?" she said.

Akira glanced up. "You usually do."

She pouted briefly, then leaned closer. "Why do you always clean it so carefully? It's not a real sword yet."

He wiped the edge gently. "Because one day it will be."

She tilted her head. "Does the sword change when you grow?"

Akira paused.

That was… a good question.

"…The sword stays the same," he said. "But how you hold it doesn't."

Mitsuri considered that. "So… if I picked it up now, and again when I'm older, it would feel different?"

"Yes."

"…Can I try?" she asked, hopeful but careful.

Akira hesitated—then handed it to her, handle first.

She lifted it with both hands.

"It's heavier than it looks!"

"That's because you're lifting with your arms," he said, then stopped himself.

> "Teaching risk detected."

"…Never mind," he added quickly.

Mitsuri laughed. "I wasn't asking you to teach me!"

She held it for a moment, then returned it respectfully.

"…You look like you belong with it," she said softly.

Akira didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

---

That evening, Akira revised his Sun Breathing notes.

Not the forms.

The body.

Limb length.

Joint angles.

Breathing timing relative to motion.

> "Hinokami Kagura requires precise coordination between diaphragm control and spinal rotation. Growth phase necessitates recalibration."

"So I shouldn't rush it," Akira murmured.

> "Correct. Fire that ignites too early burns unevenly."

He closed the notebook.

The forms were still there—unchanged, waiting.

Thirteen flames.

But for now…

He would breathe.

---

That night, lying beneath thin blankets, Akira practiced silently.

In.

Hold.

Out.

No strain.

No heat.

Just a steady rhythm—like embers waiting under ash.

Outside, spring wind rustled through new leaves.

Akira slept.
