Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 — When Winter Lets Go

Date: Early Spring — March, Taishō 13

Age: Akira — 7

Location: Azabu District

Combat Strength: ★★☆☆☆ → ★★☆☆☆ (Physical growth noticeable; control prioritized)

---

Spring didn't arrive all at once.

It came in pieces.

Snow melted unevenly, lingering in shadows while sunlight warmed the open streets. Mornings were still cold, but the air no longer cut. Buds appeared on branches almost shyly, as if unsure they were allowed.

Akira noticed first—because he always did.

His sleeves felt shorter.

Not by much.

Just enough.

He tugged at them one morning, frowned, then let it go.

> "Physical growth detected. Height increase: 2.1 cm since mid-winter. Muscle density marginally improved."

"…Already?" Akira muttered.

> "Growth timing aligns with nutritional and training balance."

He nodded slowly. Good timing, he thought.

---

March mornings became his favorite.

He still trained before sunrise, but the earth no longer felt frozen beneath his feet. Dew replaced frost. The clearing smelled faintly green now.

Akira warmed up longer, joints rolling smoothly, breath calm.

Form One through Three—unchanged.

But the feel was different.

His stance settled faster.

His balance corrected itself without thought.

> "Neuromuscular coordination improving. Movements require less conscious correction."

He didn't smile.

But he felt it.

He ended training the same way he had since winter—early, controlled, satisfied.

The sun rose as he sheathed the practice sword.

That was enough.

---

Daily life shifted too.

People commented without meaning to.

"You're growing fast," Fuku-obaa said, handing him a bowl.

"Boy's shoulders are squaring," the fishmonger muttered.

"Eat well," the doctor said, glancing at him more closely than before.

Akira adjusted meals accordingly.

More protein.

More bone broth.

Spring herbs—lighter, cleansing, supporting circulation.

> "Diet adjusted for growth phase stabilization."

He wrote everything down.

Always.

---

Mitsuri noticed later than others.

But when she did—

She really noticed.

It was a quiet afternoon in late March. Plum blossoms had begun to open, petals drifting lazily through the streets. Akira was returning from the clinic when Mitsuri fell into step beside him.

She didn't say anything at first.

Just walked.

Then—

"…Did you get taller?"

Akira blinked. "You asked that before."

"Yes, but this time I mean it," she said seriously.

He tilted his head. "…Maybe a little."

She slowed, looking him over—not rudely, just carefully.

"You feel… different," she said.

Akira paused. "How?"

She frowned slightly, searching for words. "You're quieter. But not tired-quiet. It's like… you're standing more comfortably."

He considered that.

"…I stopped rushing," he said simply.

Mitsuri hummed. "That sounds like something an adult would say."

"That's rude."

She laughed, then softened. "Can I ask you something?"

He nodded.

"…Why do you wake up so early?" she asked. "Even now."

Akira didn't answer immediately.

> "Query involves personal motivation. Response optional."

He chose honesty—careful honesty.

"Because," he said slowly, "before the sun rises… the world is honest. Nothing is pretending yet."

Mitsuri absorbed that quietly.

"…Does it make you lonely?" she asked.

Akira looked at her—really looked.

"…No," he said. "Not anymore."

Her lips curved into a small, thoughtful smile.

She didn't press further.

---

Their interactions changed after that.

They still talked.

But there were pauses now. Comfortable ones.

Mitsuri watched more than she spoke. Akira answered without explaining everything. Neither felt the need to fill silence.

One evening, as plum petals drifted past, Mitsuri said quietly:

"You help a lot of people."

Akira nodded. "So do you."

She blinked. "I do?"

"You make them feel lighter," he said. "That matters."

Her face warmed—not bright red like before. Just… warm.

"…Thank you," she said.

They walked on.

---

That night, Akira updated his notes.

Seasonal changes: early spring

Body: growth phase beginning

Training: stable, no increase

Mind: calm

At the bottom of the page, he added:

Growth doesn't announce itself. It shows up one morning and stays.

He closed the notebook and lay down.

Outside, spring insects began to sing for the first time.

Akira listened.

Tomorrow would be the same.

And that—he was learning—was a good thing.
