Chapter 46 - Chapter-46: Strength Has a cost

The collision happened quietly.

In offices.

In phone calls.

In rooms Christopher was never invited into.

Zia's father didn't ask this time.

He informed.

"You will stop meeting him," he said over breakfast, Voice steady. "Not because he's wrong--but because this path is unnecessary."

Zia set her spoon down carefully. "You raised me to save lives. Not abandon them when things get hard."

He looked at her then --really looked.

"You think this is about love,"he said ."it's about survival. "

She stood up."Then let me choose how I survive."

For the first time,he didn't respond.

Christopher faced it head -on.

Jason's father called for a meeting--this time with everyone present .

Boardroom. Glass walls.Neutral smiles.

"You're talented, "the man said again. "But attachments create leverage. "

Christopher didn't sit.

"Say what you mean," he said calmly.

Jason's father's eyes hardened

"You walk away now--or doors close .slowly. permanently. "

Christopher's chest tightened--not from fear,but clarity.

"My life isn't a negotiation, "he replied.

The silence that followed was heavy.

That was the moment.

The lowest point didn't come with shouting.

It came with understanding exactly what he was about to lose .

That evening, Christopher didn't go to the usual place.

He walked instead.

Past streets.

Past noise.

Until his phone buzzed.

A message from Zia.

Meet me .please.

The storage room felt smaller this time.

Zia's eyes were red--but her posture was straight.

"They're pushing from all sides, " She said softly. "If we keep holding on...they'll crush you first."

Christopher swallowed. "I can handle pressure. "

She shook her head ."Not this kind .Not yet ."

The word yet hung between them.

He stepped closer. "Are you asking me to leave ?"

She closed her eyes ."I'm asking you to live."

Silence stretched.

Christopher felt in then --the weight in his chest ,the crack forming.

"Say it ,"he whispered. "If this is goodbye..say it."

Zia's voice broke ,but her words didn't.

"Not goodbye. "

A pause.

"Pause."

She took his hand briefly. Squeezed once.let go.

No kiss.

No promise.

Just pain handled gently.

Before leaving, she placed one final folded note in his pocket.

Come back when they can't touch you.

Christopher stayed there long after she left.

For the first time ,he didn't feel brave.

He felt empty.

At home ,his mother watched him quietly.

"They're forcing distance, "She said.

Christopher nodded. "So I'll make it permanent. "

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

He looked up,eyes clear through the hurt .

"I'll leave, "he said ."Study. Build something they can't shake."

His stepfather placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Then don't leave broken, "he said gently. "Leave prepared. "

That night, zia stared at the ceiling.

Christopher packed a bag.

Neither slept.
