Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

Rin's thumb-down gesture acted like a lightning rod, drawing the creature's gaze away from the carnage. The Centaur Orphnoch froze mid-slaughter, its ash-grey head tilting with a predatory twitch. It abandoned its pursuit of a group of cowering civilians, its monochromatic, hollow eyes locking onto the one man in the crowd who didn't look like prey.

"Help... please, help!"

The survivors didn't wait to see the outcome. They scrambled away, the sound of their frantic, stumbling footsteps fading into the distance.

The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of ozone and the metallic tang of blood. The Orphnoch's throat rumbled with a sound like grinding stone—a dry, rasping growl that signaled a localized shift in the atmospheric pressure. It turned fully, its massive, powerful hooves gouging deep furrows into the festive street's asphalt.

Beside Rin, Mai felt the temperature drop. Her breath hitched, her fingers digging into the fabric of Rin's sleeve. What is he doing? Why is he taunting that thing?

"It's too dangerous," she whispered, her voice trembling. "We have to go. Now!" She tried to pull him back, her strength fueled by a desperate instinct to survive, but Rin remained as immovable as a mountain.

Rin gently pried her fingers from his arm. His expression was a portrait of iron-clad resolve, but beneath the surface, something darker was stirring. He looked at the bodies scattered across the street—his subjects, whose time had been cut short by this aberration. A vein pulsed at his temple, and the shadow at his feet seemed to sharpen, stretching out toward the beast like a predator's claw. This wasn't just a monster attack; it was high treason against the Sovereign.

"Run," he said, his voice dropping into a low, tectonic register that vibrated through her bones. "This thing is mine to handle. Get to safety, Mai."

The words were a haunting echo of their first encounter, but the weight behind them had shifted. Mai looked into his eyes and saw a vast, terrifying emptiness—a calm that suggested he wasn't looking at a monster, but an insult to be erased.

She didn't argue. She saw the truth hidden behind his steady gaze: he was the warrior she had seen in the shadows, and her presence was the only variable he couldn't control. She bit her lip until she drew a bead of crimson, her head nodding in a jerky, pained motion.

"I understand," she said, her voice a fragile plea. "Just... come back to me. Promise me."

Rin gave a curt nod. "Go!"

He shoved her toward the intersection just as the Centaur Orphnoch let out a piercing shriek. The creature's four powerful, muscular legs kicked off the concrete, the impact shattering the pavement as it charged with the momentum of a runaway locomotive. Mai vanished into the darkness of a side alley, placing her absolute faith in the boy who stood his ground.

"Henshin."

The word wasn't a shout; it was an activation code for reality.

BOOM.

A thunderous roar of displaced air erupted. Drawing upon the chaotic potential of the Decade Violent Emotion power, Rin bypassed the standard sequence, willing the armor into existence in a single chronal blink. One second he was a student in casual wear; the next, he was encased in the silver-and-pink plating of Kamen Rider Zi-O.

The timing was precise to the nanosecond. The Orphnoch's massive greatsword descended in a brutal vertical arc, slamming into Zi-O's shoulder with a sound like a collapsing bridge.

The impact created a localized shockwave, vaporizing nearby market stalls into splinters and shattering every festival lantern for fifty feet. But Zi-O didn't buckle. He didn't even flinch. The heavy blade groaned against his armor, unable to find purchase in a body that existed slightly out of phase with linear time. To the fleeing civilians who looked back, he was a shimmering hero. To Rin, he was the judge, jury, and executioner.

"My turn?" Zi-O asked, his voice echoing from behind the pink katakana of his visor, heavy with a cold, regal fury.

Before the Orphnoch could retract its weapon, Zi-O's hand shot out, his gauntlet clamping onto the blade's serrated edge. With a surge of golden energy that turned the ground beneath his boots to glass, he delivered a crushing front kick to the creature's barrel chest.

CRASH!

The Orphnoch was sent reeling, its four hooves screeching across the concrete, leaving four long, blackened trenches in the road. It struggled to find its balance, its stone-like hide cracking where the King's foot had connected.

Zi-O stood tall amidst the swirling ash, his silver-and-pink plating gleaming under the flicker of the dying festival fires. The air around him distorted, the very atmosphere bowing as if the world itself were recognizing its master. He didn't need a robe or a throne to project his station; his sheer presence commanded the space.

He slowly raised his right hand, extending his thumb back toward the "ZI-O" inscription on his chest—a gesture of terrifying, absolute authority.

"Remember the name of the King whose law you dared to break," he declared, the air around him rippling with the weight of a thousand futures. "I am Kamen Rider Zi-O."
