Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 + Announcement

Mai Sakurajima stared up at the stranger who had effectively rewritten her fate. He wore the standard Shuchiin blazer, marking him as a peer, yet he felt entirely foreign to the world she knew. Ordinarily, Mai kept a frost-rimmed distance from the opposite sex—a defensive mechanism honed by years of unwanted attention.

Yet, as she looked at him, the repulsion she expected never came. Was it simply because he had saved her? Her gaze drifted toward the far end of the hall, where the Bat Gurongi lay in a heap of tangled limbs and broken lockers. That nightmare had been seconds away from tearing the life out of her, and this boy had swatted it aside like an annoyance.

"Thank... thank you," she managed, her voice trembling as she wiped the silver trails of tears from her eyes. Gratitude, raw and unfiltered, softened the sharp lines of her face.

In his previous life, Rin Kuga had always held a certain reverence for the "Bunny Girl Senpai." When he had first awakened in this chaotic nexus of worlds, she was the first familiar face he had recognized in the cultural zeitgeist of the academy. He hadn't expected their first meeting to be quite this visceral.

"Can you stand?"

Rin reached down, offering his hand. His expression was a stark departure from the icy, mocking mask he had worn with Utaha Kasumigaoka. There was a genuine, stabilizing warmth in his eyes—a kindness that likely would have driven Utaha into a jealous frenzy had she witnessed it.

Mai nodded, her lips parting as she found her voice. "Yes... I'm okay."

She placed her hand in his. With a firm, effortless tug, Rin pulled her toward him. However, the adrenaline that had kept Mai's legs moving during the chase finally evaporated. Her knees turned to water. As she rose, her balance faltered, and she stumbled forward with a soft gasp.

She landed squarely against his chest.

A sharp heat climbed up Mai's neck, her face flushing a deep, embarrassed pink. She immediately braced her hands against his shoulders, pushing herself back to create a sliver of space. "Ah—sorry! I'm so sorry!"

She was mortified. It was impossible—how could she feel this flutter of attraction toward someone she had known for less than three minutes?

Rin, however, remained a pillar of composure. Whether it was his natural temperament or the lingering influence of the Ohma Zi-O Singularity shifting his psyche, he remained unfazed by the proximity of a national idol. Once he was certain she could keep her footing, his tone shifted to something more authoritative.

"Listen to me. You need to run. Now. I'll handle the bat."

"But—!" Mai started to protest, her instinct to pull him away from the danger overriding her fear. She couldn't leave her savior to face that demon alone.

Before she could finish, Rin pressed a finger to her lips, silencing her. He offered her a smile—a brilliant, infectious thing that seemed to push back the encroaching shadows of the hallway.

"Don't worry about me," he said, his voice dropping into a serious, urgent register. "Just go. I'm running out of time!"

Mai looked into his eyes and saw a terrifying certainty there. Despite her worry, she realized that staying would only make her a liability. With a final, lingering look and a silent prayer for his safety, she turned and fled toward the exit.

Behind them, a low, wet cough echoed through the hall. The Bat Gurongi dragged itself up from the wreckage of the lockers, its yellow eyes fixed on Rin with a mixture of confusion and murderous rage.

"Grrr... Damn you, Linto..." the monster hissed, its body tensing. Its head tilted as it sniffed the air, a flicker of ancient fear crossing its primal features. "You... are you... KUUGA!?"

"HRAAAGH!"

With a skyward roar, the Gurongi launched itself forward. It blurred into a streak of grey leather and obsidian claws, a living projectile aimed at Rin's throat.

Rin didn't flinch. He let go of the warmth of the moment, his aura darkening as he turned to face the oncoming storm.
