Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

The aftermath of the "TIME BREAK" left a heavy, vibrating silence in the air. Rin Kuga landed softly, his armored boots barely making a sound on the synthetic turf where the Bat Gurongi had stood only heartbeats before. The creature was gone, not a trace of its leathery hide or obsidian fangs remaining. In its place was a localized inferno, a roaring sea of orange flames fueled by the friction of shattered causality.

Against the sheer weight of a Rider Kick—especially one bolstered by the latent ripples of the Ohma power—a low-tier Gurongi stood no chance. It hadn't just died; it had been overwritten.

Rin stood slowly, the mechanical joints of the Zi-O armor hissing as they bled off excess heat. He exhaled a long, steady breath, the sound muffled by his faceplate. He casually brushed a layer of carbonized dust from his gauntlets.

Well, that was certainly a smoother run than the last one, he thought, his voice echoing with a slight metallic reverb as he spoke to the empty air. Though, I wouldn't mind if the next anomaly had a bit more backbone.

In this sprawling nexus where countless worlds collided, the appearance of these "Monsters" was becoming a routine occurrence. Even though his System had vanished into the ether, it had left behind a final, lingering directive: Protect this city. Perhaps it was a silent pact, a price paid for the absolute authority of the Ohma Zi-O Driver, but Rin had accepted the mantle.

Still, a part of him couldn't help but find the irony amusing. Using the King of Time and Space to exterminate common pests felt like using a strategic missile to swat a fly. It was an indulgence in overkill that only a Demon King could afford.

He turned his gaze toward the raging fire, the destructive byproduct of his finisher. To prevent the blaze from devouring the school's facilities, Rin simply extended a hand toward the heat. He didn't need a transformation to exert his will over the immediate timeline.

"Hmph."

With a sharp, singular grunt of focus, the laws of thermodynamics were forcibly reversed. The flames didn't just go out; they retreated. In a blur of rewinding motion, the scorched earth healed, the melted plastic of the track smoothed over, and the blackened grass regained its verdant hue. Within seconds, the athletic field looked as if a battle had never taken place.

Rin reached down and clicked the Zi-O Ridewatch from the side of the Driver. Instantly, the silver-and-charcoal plating dissolved into a flurry of dark gold particles, shimmering like dying embers before vanishing into the night air.

Rin stood there as a human once more, stretching his arms toward the stars. One hidden monster dealt with, and a legendary senpai saved. Not a bad way to end the school day.

Slutting his black-and-white drawstring bag over his shoulder, he began the walk toward the school gates, his mind already drifting toward the quiet sanctuary of the "9 5 Do" clock shop. But as he reached the exit, a familiar figure burst into his line of sight, her breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps.

"I... I thought I told you to run," Rin said, his voice flat with disbelief as he stared at Mai Sakurajima.

A flash of genuine annoyance flickered across his face. He had risked a messy reveal to buy her an escape route, and here she was, charging back into the mouth of the beast. If his timing had been a second slower, his secret would have been laid bare under the moonlight.

Mai froze, her eyes wide as she took in his unharmed state. For the first time in her career, the national idol found herself on the receiving end of a man's blunt irritation. Usually, men tripped over themselves to offer her hollow praise or forced flattery, but Rin Kuga looked as though he were dealing with a particularly stubborn child.

She knew she had been reckless. Logic dictated that she should have fled and called for help, yet a strange, inexplicable pull had dragged her back. She couldn't bear the weight of leaving him behind to face that nightmare alone.

A few stray tears, tiny and shimmering like diamonds in the dim light, escaped the corners of her eyes. She looked up at him, her lips trembling slightly as she spoke.

"I... I couldn't just leave," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the evening breeze. "I couldn't stop worrying about you. Seeing you standing here... it's more than I could have hoped for."
