Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: Cub Army

Theo sat with Luna beside the waterfall for a while longer after their conversation settled into something calmer. The floating island drifted slowly through a band of cloud while the morning warmed around them. The fruit trees rustled softly in the wind and the lake below the falls reflected the pale sky like glass. Luna leaned into his side and seemed lighter now that she had spoken the fears that had been circling her thoughts.

After a few minutes she tilted her head and looked down at herself with a slightly suspicious expression.

"Theo."

"Yes."

"Do dragons need milk?"

Theo blinked once.

"Why."

Luna gestured vaguely at her chest.

"I feel like a cow right now."

Theo tried very hard not to laugh.

He failed slightly.

Luna narrowed her eyes.

"You're laughing at me."

"I am not."

"You absolutely are."

Theo steadied his voice again and answered properly.

"Yes. The dragon girls will need milk when they hatch. Dragon hatchlings are strong but they still begin as infants. They will need feeding."

Luna groaned dramatically and fell back onto the furs.

"I knew it."

Theo looked down at her with quiet amusement.

"You sound surprised."

"I thought maybe they would just eat rocks or something. Dragons seem like the kind of creatures that would start life chewing on mountains."

Theo smiled faintly "they will eventually eat meat."

"Great. i might need more mates that'll be terrifying."

He reached down and helped pull her upright again, wrapping his arms around her in a steady hug that made her relax instantly.

Luna sighed into his chest "you know Charlotte already drinks like she's preparing for a war."

Theo rested his chin lightly against the top of her head "she will only need it for a few more days."

Luna looked up "really?"

"Yes. Phoenix daughters grow quickly, soon she will want proper food."

"What kind of food."

"Soft meat. Rice, things she can chew."

Luna brightened slightly "that's actually adorable."

Theo nodded "the will still want you though."

"She already does."

Luna smiled a little at the thought, then leaned into him again while the wind moved gently through the trees around the island.

After a while Theo said quietly, "We should return."

Luna sighed but nodded "the cubs."

"Yes and Alo and ash" Theo gave her a small look "Ash especially."

Luna laughed.

Theo shifted back into his ice phoenix form in one smooth movement. Frost shimmered briefly along his wings as he lowered himself so Luna could climb onto his back again. She wrapped her arms around his neck feathers comfortably and leaned forward.

"Alright," she said. "Let's go home."

Theo launched from the island and carried her back across the sky. The flight was quiet and smooth. The mountains stretched below them in wide green valleys and silver rivers while the clouds drifted around them like slow moving seas. As they approached the bear tribe bunker carved into the mountainside, Luna leaned forward slightly.

"Hey Theo."

"Yes."

"That silver bear."

Theo already knew what she meant.

"He has been watching you."

"I noticed."

Theo's wings shifted slightly as he angled toward the cavern entrance.

"He does it often."

Luna frowned.

"That's weird."

"Yes."

"Should I be worried?"

Theo's voice stayed calm "Not yet."

They landed inside the outer cavern of the bunker a few moments later. The warm air of the underground halls wrapped around them as Theo shifted back into his beast man form and helped Luna down. The moment her feet touched the stone floor, someone grabbed her.

Alo had clearly been waiting.

He pulled her straight into his arms and kissed her like a man who had spent the entire morning resisting the urge to go searching for her himself. His hands settled firmly at her waist as he held her against him and kissed her again, deeper this time.

Luna laughed against his mouth "Hello to you too."

"You were gone too long," Alo murmured.

"It was a date."

"I know."

He kissed her again anyway.

Across the den, a small furious wail suddenly broke the moment.

Charlotte, the tiny phoenix girl sat on the furs with her wings flared and her face scrunched in full baby outrage. Her icy blue eyes filled with tears the moment she saw Luna standing across the room. "Mama!" the cry seemed to say in a hiccuping wail.

Luna immediately slipped out of Alo's arms.

"Oh no no no."

She hurried over and scooped Charlotte up before the little phoenix could escalate the situation further. Charlotte clung to her instantly, crying harder for a moment before recognizing the familiar scent and warmth.

Her cries broke into hiccups, then soft whimpers, then silence.

Luna held her close and kissed the top of her tiny head "I'm here," she murmured. "I'm right here."

Charlotte's wings folded against her back as she snuggled closer, still sniffling.

Theo watched from across the room as the baby phoenix pressed her face against Luna's chest and instinctively began feeding.

The moment she started drinking, the tension melted out of her tiny body completely, her little hands clutched Luna's shirt while she drank with soft determined gulps.

Luna smiled softly down at her "there you go."

Alo watched the scene quietly, the earlier urgency in his posture replaced with something calmer and deeper.

Charlotte looked impossibly small in Luna's arms.

After a few moments she pulled back slightly, still hiccuping once or twice while blinking sleepily up at her mother.

Luna wiped the last of the tears from her cheeks and kissed her nose.

"Better?"

Charlotte made a tiny satisfied sound and rested her head against Luna's chest again.

The den fell quiet. It was one of those moments where everything felt strangely peaceful despite the chaos of cubs and eggs and the very complicated future waiting ahead of them.

Theo stepped closer and looked down at Luna and the baby phoenix in her arms.

Charlotte yawned.

Then fell asleep while still holding onto her mother, and Luna held her carefully, smiling in that soft way that made every male in the room feel something steady and protective settle in their chest.

Later that day.

The bear tribe bunker had become loud, not the kind of loud that came from battle or shouting warriors or drunken celebrations. It was the chaotic, unpredictable noise of very young creatures discovering that they possessed wings, claws, voices, and opinions.

Luna sat cross legged in the center of the fur pile while Charlotte leaned against her chest like a tiny warm furnace.

At one week old Charlotte had already grown dramatically. She was roughly the size of a six-month human baby now, with round cheeks, tiny phoenix wings, and bright blue eyes that missed absolutely nothing. Her red hair had grown thicker as well and now stood up in soft little tufts that made her look permanently surprised, at the moment she was gripping Luna's finger with intense focus while making small determined noises.

"Mmm ah yes" Luna smiled down at her "yes," she said seriously. "That's a very important opinion."

Charlotte responded with another babble and tried to chew on Luna's knuckle.

Across the den, Alo knelt beside the phoenix boys like a very large babysitter who had discovered his responsibilities were more complicated than anticipated.

Chunky had climbed directly onto Alo's shoulder and was pecking curiously at one of his braids.

Smartie Pants was standing on a folded blanket chirping loudly while stretching his wings as if he were attempting to conduct a lecture.

Brave sat near Luna like a tiny golden guard, watching Charlotte with intense concentration.

Ash leaned against the cave wall nearby, arms crossed, looking deeply entertained.

"You have a court," he told Luna, "i do."

Luna adjusted Charlotte slightly in her arms "also a small dragon army arriving soon."

Ash rubbed his face.

"Yes."

At that moment Smartie Pants chirped something extremely loud.

Luna looked up "I feel like they're talking."

Theo, who had been sitting beside her polishing a small blade with calm focus, glanced toward the chicks.

"They are us males can understand them"

Luna blinked.

"Wait seriously? no fair."

The chicks chirped again, Smartie Pants flapped his wings excitedly and hopped closer to Luna.

Ash tilted his head slightly while listening, then he translated.

"He says he would like more cuddles."

Luna immediately reached out and scooped Smartie Pants into her lap "Oh you poor neglected baby."

Smartie Pants made a very pleased chirp and snuggled into her hands.

Chunky shouted something from Alo's shoulder.

Theo glanced over.

"He says you should have more mates."

Luna choked.

Alo slowly turned his head toward the chick, "…what, my son doesn't think this is enough?"

Chunky chirped again confidently.

Theo remained calm "He believes the pack would benefit from additional males."

Ash started laughing "That one is ambitious."

Luna stared at the fat little phoenix chick "you are one week old."

Chunky chirped again proudly.

Brave then made a quieter sound.

Theo listened carefully, his mouth twitched.

"What."

Theo cleared his throat "He says his mother is beautiful."

Luna melted instantly "Oh my sweet baby."

Brave chirped again.

Alo looked heart broken.

Theo added carefully, "He also says his father is ugly."

Ash burst into laughter so sudden he had to brace himself against the wall.

Alo looked offended, "I am not ugly your mother chose me!"

Brave chirped again.

Theo translated calmly.

"He insists."

Luna buried her face in her hands while laughing, "oh no."

Alo gently removed Chunky from his shoulder and held him up at eye level, "You are slandering me."

Chunky chirped something smug.

Theo listened.

"He agrees with Brave."

Ash laughed harder.

Charlotte made a loud babble that cut through the entire conversation. Everyone looked down, she was staring at the phoenix chicks with intense focus, then she waved one chubby hand.

Brave immediately hopped closer.

Smartie Pants leaned forward.

Chunky chirped.

Charlotte made another sound.

Theo listened "she says they are being noisy."

Luna blinked "She said that? wait you can understand her too?"

Theo nodded "sometimes, sometimes its just noises and she believes the den should be quieter."

Ash wiped tears from his eyes "she is already in charge."

Charlotte looked pleased with herself, then she turned back toward Luna and grabbed her shirt with tiny determined fists.

"Mmm."

Luna smiled softly "yes, I know."

Charlotte leaned forward and began drinking again while staring at her brothers as if she expected them to behave.

The boys did not behave.

Smartie Pants chirped for more attention.

Chunky tried to climb Alo again.

Brave continued watching Charlotte like a tiny bodyguard.

Theo sat beside Luna translating occasional chirps with increasing amusement while Ash and Alo attempted to maintain order among creatures that had absolutely no intention of being orderly.

The den had never been this chaotic.

Or this warm.

And Luna sat in the center of it all with Charlotte in her arms while the phoenix chicks argued loudly about pack politics and cuddles.
