Chapter 55 - Chapter 55: Yes Please 18+

Theo was all hunger and muscle, slamming into her with a rhythm that echoed off the water, the thwap thwap thwap of their bodies loud even over the rush of the river. She was drowning in sensation, the cold inside her, the heat at her skin. Her breath caught on every thrust, every new stretch, and she heard herself sob out his name, felt her legs tremble where he'd hooked them around his hips.

Each time he bottomed out, the air left her lungs, replaced by the desperate need to be even fuller, to keep him there. He bent her back over the rock, hands bracing her waist so she couldn't escape the bruising force of his hips. Every tilt made her see stars, made her toes curl and her nails dig in to whatever patch of Theo she could catch.

He snarled actually snarled when she clenched around him, the sound vibrating against her chest where he bit down on her collarbone, then licked away the sting.

"How are you still so tight," he growled, half in awe, half accusation. "You take it like you're made for me. You want it?"

She nodded, frantic, raw. "Yes. Please, Theo!"

He doubled his speed, fucking her so hard her vision blurred, her skull bouncing against the moss while the world narrowed to just his cock, the way it split her, the way she couldn't get used to the cold. Her moans went abrupt, high and helpless, each one torn out of her with the next feral thrust.

He reached between them, fingers slippery, and circled her clit exactly once before she came hard, her whole body locking up, her mouth dropping open in a scream that barely made it out. Theo didn't stop he rode out her spasms, never letting up, chasing his own release with wild, broken breaths.

She felt him pulse inside her, the warmth lost almost instantly to the chill, and it should have been impossible, the contrast, the way it left her shaking and empty and aching for more all at once.

Theo didn't let her go. He pressed his forehead against hers, both of them panting, and finally, finally, kissed her like it was slow, like he was savoring the taste of her lips. She quivered, small aftershocks still rippling through her.

"You're perfect," he said, not softly but with a desperation that tasted like truth.

She smiled, dazed, fingers knotted in his hair. "You're freezing."

He laughed, stroking her cheek with the back of his hand. "You like it."

She did. She liked him, even with the claws and the teeth and the endless, relentless need. Maybe especially for those things.

She wondered, in the quiet that followed, whether she'd ever be able to tell the others about this, about the way Theo could ruin her and put her back together in the same moment. She doubted it. Some things belonged to the river and the cold, and to Theo alone.

He kissed her again, slower now, cradling her with gentleness she wouldn't have believed possible from someone who fucked like that. She let herself melt, let the water and the wind and the soreness seep deep, because she'd need to remember this how it felt to be wanted so fiercely, so thoroughly, she forgot the world outside them even existed.

"You're amazing," he said, voice thick.

She smiled against his skin. "I know," she said.

Theo studied her quietly for a moment before speaking again.

"I did not expect to find a mate," he said.

Luna looked up at him.

"You say that like it was unlikely."

"It was."

Theo shifted slightly so she sat more securely against him, one arm steady around her waist.

"You know how our bonds work," he continued. "Male beast mates do not get practice runs. We do not get second chances. We find one woman or we find none at all."

Luna's fingers tightened slightly on his shirt.

Theo's voice remained calm.

"If we bond, that is it. Forever. One mate. One life. If that bond never happens, we simply… remain alone."

She stared at him.

"You expected to be alone?"

"Yes."

He did not soften the answer.

"I am an ice phoenix," Theo said. "We are not exactly easy creatures to live beside. Most women prefer warmth. They prefer comfort. They prefer men who look less like they might freeze the room when they lose their temper."

Luna frowned.

"I like the freezing."

"I know" he said smiling. His hand moved slowly along her back.

"That does not change the reality that I assumed I would live my life without a mate. It seemed statistically reasonable."

She stared at him for a long moment.

"Statistics," she said slowly, "are a very sad way to decide your romantic future."

Theo's mouth twitched slightly "possibly."

Luna leaned closer, her voice softer now "so when you met me…"

Theo looked at her directly "when I met you," he said quietly, "I understood that the rest of my life had already been decided."

Her breath caught slightly. "You're very calm about that."

"I am very certain about it."

Luna studied his face carefully, her fingers brushing lightly over the faint scar that crossed his collarbone.

"You never even kissed anyone before me, did you?"

Theo did not look embarrassed "no."

Luna blinked "not even once?"

"No."

"That is extremely unfair."

"How."

"Because you are very good at it."

Theo tilted his head slightly "i studied."

She stared open mouthed "you studied kissing?"

"I studied you."

That made her laugh, then she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him again, softer this time.

Theo held her carefully, as if she were both fragile and entirely his.

After a moment she rested her forehead against his "so you're stuck with me forever."

"Yes."

"You don't seem upset about that."

Theo kissed her again, slower this time "no," he said quietly. "I am not." Theo listened to the quiet after Luna finished speaking.

The floating island drifted slowly through a bank of clouds while sunlight filtered through the mist from the waterfall. The sound of falling water filled the clearing in a steady rhythm that made the rest of the world feel distant. Luna sat beside him on the furs, her knees drawn up slightly while she looked out over the edge of the island.

For someone who talked as much as she did, Luna became very quiet when she was thinking too hard.

Theo had noticed that about her early "you are thinking again," he said calmly.

Luna sighed and rested her chin on her knees "i know."

Theo watched her profile carefully "what now."

She hesitated before answering "you know how the world is," she said slowly. "The female ratio. The way beast women behave."

Theo's expression remained neutral "yes."

In this world, females were rare. One female for every thousand males meant that most women were treated like royalty from the moment they were born. Many of them grew arrogant with that power. Some became cruel, it was not uncommon for beast women to treat their mates like servants or tools.

Luna had never behaved that way.

That was part of why the males around her seemed slightly dazed whenever she spoke kindly to them. She picked up a fallen leaf beside the furs and turned it between her fingers.

"Sometimes I think about how strange it is that I'm different from them," she said. "Most women would never bother raising sons properly. They would nurse the daughter and leave the males to the fathers."

"That is normal."

"I know" She glanced at him "but it feels wrong to me."

Theo did not argue with that.

She continued quietly "i look at the boys and they're so tiny right now. Brave already tries to guard Charlotte. Smartie Pants keeps staring at things like he's solving puzzles. Chunky tries to make friends with literally everything." She smiled faintly. "They're already little people."

Theo nodded "they are."

"And then I think about leaving eventually," Luna admitted. "Traveling again. Exploring new territories. Finding new tribes."

Theo studied her face "you will."

She blinked, shocked. "You say that very calmly."

"You were never meant to stay in one place."

Luna let out a soft laugh "that sounds like something Sprout would say."

Theo tilted his head slightly "Sprout?"

Luna froze for half a second before recovering "…a a name i thought of calling one of the babies."

[GREAT NAME IDEA LUNA]

'shut up sprout'

Theo watched her for a moment but chose not to pursue it.

Instead he said, "You were restless even before the cubs were born, it is part of who you are."

Luna nodded slowly "i know."

She hesitated again "and eventually I will meet other males," she said.

Theo did not react outwardly, he had already accepted that possibility the moment he chose to remain with her.

In a world where females were rare, a woman capable of bearing cubs would naturally draw multiple mates. It was not unusual.

Still, Luna looked nervous "i worry about that too," she admitted. "What if you or Alo or Ash get tired of sharing me."

Theo reached out and tilted her chin gently so she had to look at him "that will not happen."

"You sound very certain."

"I am."

She searched his face carefully "you're not jealous?"

Theo considered the question honestly. "Jealousy exists," he said. "But it does not change the reality of this world."

"What reality."

"That a female capable of building a strong pack will always draw more mates."

Luna sighed "that still feels weird."

"It may." His thumb brushed lightly along her jaw, but understand something important."

She waited.

"In this world," Theo said quietly, "most males would live their entire lives without ever finding a mate. Without ever touching one. Without ever having cubs."

Luna looked startled.

"I know the ratio is bad but."

"It is worse than you imagine."

She went very still.

Theo continued calmly. "A male might spend decades serving a female who barely acknowledges him. He might never father a cub. He might never hear kindness from the one woman he is allowed near."

Luna looked down at her hands "that's horrible."

"It is common."

She was quiet for a moment before whispering, "And then there's me."

Theo nodded "You feed your cubs yourself. You hold the sons and the daughter equally. You speak to males like they are people instead of servants."

She frowned slightly "that sounds like basic decency."

"In this world," Theo said, "it is rare."

Luna leaned sideways until her shoulder rested against him again "that makes me sad."

Theo wrapped one arm around her "it should not."

"Why."

"Because it means the pack you are building will be different."

She exhaled slowly.

Behind them the waterfall continued its endless rush down the cliff.

After a moment Luna said softly, "Back at the tribe things are going to get even crazier soon."

"The dragon eggs."

She nodded.

"Two girls and one boy."

Theo allowed himself a faint smile "the den will become loud."

"Very loud." She leaned her head against his shoulder "and eventually I'll leave again. Explore somewhere new."

Theo looked out across the sky where the island drifted slowly above the clouds
