Chapter 51 - Chapter 51: Fire

The cave bunker smelled like warm fur, milk, and faint phoenix fire.

Luna slept in the center of it all, Theo had carried her to the thickest pile of furs in the den and tucked her in with a care that would have shocked anyone who had ever seen the ice phoenix fight. His large hands adjusted the blankets again even though they were already perfect.

"Stop fussing," Ash muttered from across the den.

Theo ignored him.

Luna's breathing had finally evened out, her fox ears twitching faintly in sleep. The violent exhaustion of birth had drained the last of her strength, but her body was already changing.

The healer crouched beside her, looking increasingly confused "That's… not normal," the healer said slowly.

Theo's eyes sharpened "What isn't?"

The healer gently pressed Luna's stomach, frowning "It's already shrinking."

Ash leaned over his shoulder "How fast?"

The healer looked baffled "Faster than it should. It's like her body already repaired half the damage."

Theo nodded once "Good, expected of my mate."

Across the den, Alo didn't hear a word of it, he was completely occupied. Charlotte lay in the crook of his arm, the tiny phoenix girl had fallen asleep after feeding, her porcelain skin glowing faintly in the firelight. Her hair was soft red fluff, already forming tiny tufts around her ears. Two impossibly small phoenix wings rested against her back, twitching slightly whenever she dreamed.

Her eyes had closed again, but Alo had not stopped staring.

"She's… perfect," he said quietly.

Ash walked over and crouched beside him.

Alo gently brushed his finger across Charlotte's tiny hand. Her fingers wrapped around his instantly, the movement hit him like a spear through the chest "She's strong," Ash said.

Alo nodded slowly "Yes." Then he leaned down and kissed the top of her head "Thank you," he whispered softly, as if Luna could hear him through sleep "For them." His gaze flicked to the other three bundles beside him.

The phoenix chicks had already curled into tiny balls of warm feathers. Their golden down shimmered faintly with inner heat, they looked ridiculous, and perfect. Alo gently scooped one into his hand, the chick yawned and then bit his finger.

Ash barked out a laugh "That one likes you."

Alo looked offended "It attacked me."

"It's a phoenix," Ash said. "That's affection."

Nearby, Theo finished glaring at the healer long enough to finally wave him away.

"She's stable," the healer said quickly. "Better than stable, actually."

Theo narrowed his eyes "You're sure."

The healer nodded rapidly "Yes definitely."

Theo finally stepped back, then immediately returned to Luna's side anyway. He brushed her hair away from her forehead with slow, careful fingers "You did well," he murmured quietly.

Sprout appeared in Luna's dreams.

Alo gently placed Charlotte back onto Luna's chest, the tiny phoenix girl immediately snuggled closer to her mother. The three phoenix chicks followed, wobbling over the blankets until they collapsed in a warm pile against Luna's side.

Theo looked up "Why are they doing that?"

Ash shrugged.

"Warmth."

The healer cleared his throat nervously "That's… actually unusual."

All three men turned toward him, the healer swallowed. "Beast mothers usually favor daughters. Male hatchling are often ignored until they prove themselves."

Alo looked down at the three tiny boys sleeping beside Luna, then at Charlotte curled safely against her chest.

Luna stirred faintly in her sleep, even unconscious, her hand shifted, she pulled all four babies closer.

Protective.

Instinctive.

Theo snorted softly.

"Well," he said "She didn't read that rule."

Ash chuffed.

Alo smiled quietly.

And the tiny phoenix girl stretched her little wings as she slept.

The healer left quickly after confirming Luna was stable. Theo had escorted him out of the cave bunker with a firm grip on the man's shoulder and a final warning glare that ensured he would not linger. When Theo returned, the den had settled into a quieter rhythm.

Ash leaned against the stone wall with his arms folded while he watched the small pile of newborn chaos resting on the furs beside Luna. The three phoenix chicks had already bundled themselves together in a warm tangle of golden down, while Charlotte lay tucked against Luna's chest, her tiny phoenix wings twitching now and then in her sleep.

Alo remained crouched beside them like a vigilant guardian. His eyes followed every movement the babies made, even the smallest twitch of a wing or sleepy shift of a claw "They're breathing," he said quietly.

Ash looked over at him "Yes."

Alo leaned slightly closer to the chicks "They're warm."

Ash rubbed his forehead with a tired smile "That is generally how living creatures work."

Alo sighed at Ash "wait till your dragon cubs hatch then you'll understand."

Theo walked back into the den and crouched beside Luna. His gaze lingered on her face for a moment to confirm she was still resting comfortably before he looked over the small cluster of babies beside her "They're fine," he said.

Alo glanced up but did not move from his post "They moved."

Ash shook his head slowly "That will continue happening."

Theo ignored the exchange and shifted into a more practical tone "We should divide responsibilities."

Ash straightened slightly from the wall.

Theo gestured toward Luna first "I will take care of her."

Neither man argued with that.

Alo rested a careful hand near the babies "I'll watch them."

Ash pushed away from the wall and crouched on the other side of the furs "I'll help with the cubs and the eggs."

Theo nodded once "We will rotate when needed."

Alo frowned slightly "I'm not leaving."

Ash smirked "You will if Luna orders you to."

Alo thought about that for a moment "…fair."

The cave fell quiet again as the three men settled into their roles. Alo gently re positioned one of the phoenix chicks when it started rolling toward the edge of the blanket pile. Ash nudged Charlotte closer to Luna's warmth when the tiny girl wriggled.

Theo sat beside Luna and watched her breathing.

Several minutes passed before Luna stirred. Her fox ears twitched first, then her eyes opened slowly. She reached out automatically, her hands searching until she felt the familiar presence of her mates nearby "I love you all so much," she murmured sleepily. "Thank you."

Theo leaned down and kissed her softly "You're welcome."

She blinked at him, still foggy with exhaustion, then frowned slightly "Why do I feel like I wrestled a volcano?"

"You gave birth to four phoenixes," Theo replied calmly.

Luna groaned and rubbed her face "Right." Her eyes drifted downward toward the furs beside her. The babies were still there, curled together and warm. Relief washed visibly across her expression.

Theo brushed her hair gently away from her face "You should know something."

Luna looked at him suspiciously "That sentence usually leads to trouble."

Theo smiled faintly "Male phoenix cubs grow very quickly. By the end of the week they will likely be around two feet tall and able to speak perfect beast language."

Luna blinked several times.

"What."

Ash chuckled quietly.

Theo continued as if he had not just delivered alarming news "In about two weeks they will learn to shift into their beast boy forms."

Luna stared at him.

"So I gave birth today and I'll be raising talking toddlers next week."

"Essentially, but we will raise them, at this point your just cuddles, kisses and a milk bar, and they will already have opinions."

Ash nodded solemnly "Many opinions."

Luna covered her eyes with one hand "Oh no, also i am not a cow."

Theo leaned forward and gently nuzzled her forehead "They will still be fifteen years away from becoming full beast men."

"Oh good," Luna muttered. "Plenty of time to emotionally prepare for my children forming a political alliance against me."

Theo's gaze moved briefly toward the babies "They also appear stronger than most phoenix offspring."

Luna peeked through her fingers, 'thinking about it i did bless them with sprouts power, oh well."

"That feels ominous."

"It is likely a positive sign," Theo said.

He added another detail almost casually "You are also now immune to fire."

Luna sat up slightly "I'm sorry, what?"

Ash grinned "You're flameproof now."

She stared at him "Do you know how many arguments we could have settled earlier if I knew that?"

Theo gently steadied her as she shifted "You should wash and rest."

Luna glanced down at herself and winced "Yes, that seems reasonable."

Theo stood and carefully lifted her into his arms. He carried her to the warm basin near the wall and dipped a cloth into the heated water before gently cleaning the dried blood and sweat from her skin.

Luna leaned against him while he worked "You are surprisingly good at this," she said.

Theo continued washing her arms "I have hidden talents."

She smiled faintly.

Across the room Alo gently kissed Charlotte's tiny head as she slept "Thank you," he murmured softly. "You're perfect."

Ash watched the phoenix chicks tumble clumsily over each other as they adjusted their positions "We are absolutely doomed," he said.

Theo glanced over his shoulder toward the furs "Yes."

Luna smiled as Theo continued washing her "And you all love it, and our little girl is beautiful and our little boys are so handsome."

None of them disagreed.
