Chapter 50 - Chapter 50: A Girl

The world tore open inside Luna.

One moment she was melted across the broad, furred pillar of Ash's chest, boneless and breathless from the relentless devotion he had been pouring into her body.

The next she was clawing at his arm and screaming, the sound ripped from her throat so violently that something in her jaw popped. Her mouth stretched wide around the cry, and the noise flooded the cave bunker like a waterfall.

Ash's arms locked around her instantly.

"Luna!"

Her body convulsed.

Alo's pupils blew wide, black swallowing the gold as instinct snapped over him. He dropped beside her and tried to hold her still. It was pointless. Luna's hips jerked and twisted violently, tail arching so hard the vertebrae strained.

Pain detonated up her spine.

White.

Blinding.

The system had chosen now.

"SPROUT!" Luna shrieked, her head whipped side to side. Red dots burst across her vision.

Sprout answered immediately.

[CONGRATULATIONS, LUNA. YOU ARE DILATED TO TWELVE CENTIMETERS. WOULD YOU LIKE TO APPLY PAIN MANAGEMENT?]

'Yesyesyesyesyes!'

[PAIN MANAGEMENT APPLIED.]

[DO NOT OPERATE HEAVY MACHINERY.]

Luna stared, then she laughed, then sobbed, then vomited.

Alo caught her before she collapsed sideways, pulling her upright against his chest. His large hands braced her hips as he murmured low nonsense in her ear, soft beast sounds meant to soothe.

Ash shifted behind her, steady as a mountain.

Theo's voice cut in from somewhere near her shoulder.

"Hold her."

Then louder.

"ASH. HOLD HER. SHE'LL BITE."

"WHERE THE FUCK IS THE HEALER?!" Luna screamed, she bit anyway. Her teeth sank into Alo's forearm, hard.

Alo didn't even flinch.

He only widened her knees and held her steady as another contraction tore through her body.

Sprout chimed again.

[LABOR PROGRESSING: PHOENIX BREED.]

[FOUR OFFSPRING IMMINENT.]

'What… what is it?'

[FOUR PURE PHOENIXES.]

[THREE MALE.]

[ONE FEMALE.]

[MALES IN EGG FORM.]

[FEMALE WILL HATCH ON DELIVERY.]

[STAY HYDRATED.]

Another contraction slammed into her, the fox inside her was almost delighted by the chaos, the human part of Luna wanted to die, her body seized violently. Something deep in her pelvis cracked like ice breaking on a frozen lake. Pressure built until it felt like an entire mountain was pushing downward through her bones.

Fluid spilled across the furs.

Ash's voice snapped into command.

"Alo."

"I know." Alo pressed her belly with careful hands, guiding the pressure downward.

"Push, Luna."

Sprout flickered again.

[DISASSOCIATION PROTOCOL OFFERED.]

[WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE SOMEWHERE ELSE?]

Luna nodded weakly, or drooled. She wasn't sure.

For a moment her mind floated upward, detached, she watched the scene below like a ghost.

Three powerful men knelt around a screaming fox woman whose tail lashed trenches into the dirt floor of the cave bunker.

Ash held her upright.

Alo guided her body.

Theo hovered nearby like a blade ready to strike something.

Then another contraction dragged her violently back inside herself.

"Push!" Alo ordered.

Luna screamed and pushed with everything she had.

Something slid free.

A golden glowing egg rolled onto the furs, it was molten and beautiful, opalescent with veins of gold and blue fire running beneath its shell.

Ash made a sound she had never heard before.

A second contraction.

Another egg, then a third.

Each one heavier than the last.

Luna's body trembled violently.

"Last one," Alo said.

"Push."

She did, and this time…

Fire, the baby came out in a rush of heat and liquid.

Not an egg.

A tiny girl, She wailed immediately, fists clenched and fangs visible in her furious cry, filled the cave bunker. Her hair burned red like fresh forge iron and her eyes opened almost at once, startlingly clear and bright, a piercing arctic blue that seemed far too aware for something so newly born, two tiny fire red wings on her back like a baby angel.

Her tiny arms stretched toward Luna, instinct took over before Luna could even think. She gathered the child to her chest with trembling arms, and the baby latched immediately, nursing with fierce determination as if she had been waiting her entire life for that moment.

The cave bunker fell silent.

Theo knelt nearby, his hands trembling slightly as he carefully gathered the three phoenix eggs into the folds of his cloak, cradling them with the same reverence he might give a sacred relic.

Alo leaned forward and cleaned the newborn girl the way beast men did, his tongue smoothing away blood and birth fluid with careful, gentle strokes. The act would have seemed strange to anyone else, but here it felt completely natural.

Absurd, and somehow perfect.

Luna's eyes filled quietly as she watched them. Her body felt hollow and drained after the violence of birth, yet at the same time something inside her stretched outward, vast and endless.

Sprout appeared in her vision.

[CONGRATULATIONS, LUNA.]

[YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY REPRODUCED.]

[WOULD YOU LIKE TO NAME YOUR DAUGHTER?]

Names rushed through her mind in a blur, but none of them felt right. The tiny creature pressed against her chest was not delicate or fragile. She felt like fire. Like something sharp and inevitable.

"Charlotte," Luna whispered.

The baby opened her eyes again.

The men surrounding her stared as though they had just witnessed a comet fall from the sky. None of them reached out to touch the child yet. They only watched her, stunned by the quiet miracle resting in Luna's arms.

Luna laughed weakly, breath trembling, for a brief moment she felt as if the entire world had gathered itself into this one small space.

Then exhaustion crushed her, her tail curled instinctively around her body as Sprout softened the edges of her awareness, and Luna drifted into sleep with Charlotte still tucked safely against her chest.

Alo was not a man who stayed still.

Even now he paced along the curve of the den like a caged predator, arms folded as he watched Luna and the newborn girl with relentless focus.

Charlotte clung stubbornly to Luna's breast, her tiny hands flexing and gripping as she fed with startling ferocity. She was impossibly small and yet somehow fierce, her little mouth working with the determination of something that refused to lose its place in the world.

Alo stared at her as if she might vanish if he looked away.

When Luna's arm finally trembled from exhaustion, he knelt beside her and carefully slid his hand beneath the infant's small body to support her weight.

Charlotte did not hesitate. She simply adjusted and continued nursing as if nothing had changed.

Alo felt something strange inside his chest. Not pride , not fear, something softer and far more dangerous. It felt like his ribs had cracked open and something inside him had spilled out.

Across the den, Theo hovered near the eggs, he tried to appear calm, but he failed. His gaze flicked constantly between the eggs and Luna, then to Alo, and then back again as if he were waiting for something to happen.

The first egg cracked, the sound was small but sharp enough to echo through the cave. Alo crouched immediately, his attention snapping toward the furs, another crack followed.

Then another.

The shells split open.

Three tiny phoenix chicks pushed their way into the world, their bodies slick and warm as faint golden fire shimmered across their damp feathers.

They did not cry, instead they yawned, then, wobbling awkwardly on fragile legs, they began moving toward Luna as if drawn by instinct.

One collapsed gently against her thigh, half asleep, Luna reached down and stroked the chick's soft head without waking.

Theo exhaled slowly, then the healer burst into the cave bunker.

Late.

Very late.

Theo's head snapped toward him.

The healer froze the moment he realized what he had interrupted.

"You're late," Theo said quietly.

The man opened his mouth to explain.

Theo crossed the distance in two strides, grabbed him by the collar, and dragged him toward the tunnel leading out of the inner chamber. The healer stumbled as Theo hauled him outside, boots scraping helplessly across the stone, "You had one job," Theo said, his voice low and dangerous. "Do you understand what would have happened if something went wrong in here?"

The healer swallowed hard.

Theo released him with a shove that nearly knocked him off balance.

"Stay there."

Inside the den again, Ash finally spoke, his voice sounded rough and raw "She's going to ruin us."

Alo looked down at Luna sleeping beneath Ash's protective shadow. Charlotte had finished feeding and now lay curled against her chest while the three phoenix chicks nestled against the warmth of her side, he watched them for a long moment.

Then he nodded slowly "Yes." His voice was calm.

"And we'll thank her for it."
