Fifty minutes had been played, and Westminster F.C. were struggling to regain possession from Bush Hill Rangers F.C.
Bush Hill patiently controlled the ball, circulating it around the pitch as they tried to lure Westminster out of shape. From the touchline, the Westminster head coach shouted instructions. "Don't take the bait! Hold the line! Stay disciplined!"
Eventually, Bush Hill's patience cost them. A misplaced pass rolled straight into Oswin's path. Without hesitating, he switched play with a firm pass to the right midfielder. The right midfielder cushioned the ball with his chest before laying it off to the central midfielder. Westminster immediately increased the tempo. One-touch passes zipped across the midfield as the players exchanged quick combinations, pulling Bush Hill's midfield from side to side.
The ball finally reached Maximilian. He received it with his back to goal and tried to turn, only to see two midfielders closing him down. Before they could trap him, he spotted Oswin making an overlapping run on the left. Maximilian released the pass. Oswin exploded forward. His improved acceleration left the left-back trailing behind him. As the defender desperately tried to recover, Oswin slowed for a split second, stepped over the ball with his left foot, then poked it cleanly through the defender's legs before sprinting past him.
Even Winston, watching from the bench, leaned forward in admiration. His dribbling has improved again...
Reaching the byline, Oswin drilled a low cross into the penalty area. Maximilian met it first time.
Bang!
The shot beat the goalkeeper...
Clang!
It crashed against the post before bouncing harmlessly out of play.
"Ooooh!" The entire stadium groaned before breaking into applause for the move. Bush Hill's goalkeeper wasted no time. He quickly collected the ball and launched play with a long throw toward a midfielder who had drifted into space. With one touch, the midfielder threaded a pass into the path of the forwards breaking behind Westminster's defensive line.
The striker burst into the penalty area. A Westminster defender recovered just in time, using his body to force the striker wide. Instead of shooting from the tight angle, the striker calmly squared a low pass behind the center-back. A second Bush Hill forward arrived... And struck the ball first time.
Thwack!
The entire stadium erupted. Bush Hill Rangers supporters roared as one voice, their chants echoing around the stands while the players sprinted toward the corner flag to celebrate.
When play restarted, Maximilian tapped the ball to Oswin. Oswin immediately drove forward, gliding past the first midfielder who tried to close him down. He returned the ball to Maximilian, who accelerated toward the edge of the penalty area, searching for an opening to unleash a long-range shot.
Crunch!
Lukas Hickman timed his challenge perfectly. Sliding in from the side, he cleanly dispossessed Maximilian before quickly getting back to his feet. Without hesitation, he released the ball to the left midfielder, who burst down the wing. The winger knocked the ball into space, sprinted after it, beat his marker to the byline, and whipped a cross into the penalty area. A Westminster defender met it first.
Thud!
The goalkeeper punched the ball clear with both fists, sending it behind for a corner. From the bench, Winston glanced toward Maximilian, who could only shake his head in frustration.
Bush Hill Rangers aren't kidding... Their defense really is the best in the Under-21 league. And their counterattacks are even sharper than ours.
As Bush Hill prepared to take the corner, Winston overheard the Westminster coaching staff discussing a tactical adjustment.
"Maximilian can't find any space."
"They've shut Oswin down too."
Winston shifted his attention back to the pitch. He quickly noticed what the coaches had seen. Bush Hill's left-back no longer stayed deep whenever Oswin drifted wide. Instead, he stepped forward aggressively, allowing the team to transition from a 4-3-3 into an attacking 3-3-4 whenever they won possession. Lukas Hickman became the anchor of the back line, organizing the defense while covering the spaces left behind.
Even more impressive was the way they marked Oswin. It wasn't just one player anymore. The left-back pressured him from the front, while the left midfielder immediately doubled up whenever Oswin received the ball. They moved as a unit, constantly covering for one another.
So this is why everyone calls them the best defense in the league... They're always one step ahead.
Fweeeet! Fweeeet! Fweeeet!!
As halftime approached, Winston was the last player to walk into the tunnel. As he disappeared beneath the stands, he glanced back one last time at the sea of supporters. The chants, drums, and dancing fans echoed throughout the stadium, filling him with even greater determination.
I want to be out there...
Inside the changing room, warm, humid air greeted him—the result of twenty-two exhausted players trying to catch their breath. Winston dropped onto the bench beside Oswin.
Oswin leaned over with a smirk. "You still haven't answered my question."
"What question?"
"Are you coming to the arcade after the match?"
Winston nodded. "Yeah, bro. I'll be there."
Oswin laughed. "Good. You won't regret it. The place has every game you can think of."
"I'll hold you to that."
Before Winston could reply, the head coach clapped his hands. "Alright, everyone. Eyes up." The room immediately fell silent. "Bush Hill are switching between attacking and defensive phases too comfortably. We're changing our setup."
The head striker coach leaned over and whispered something into the head coach's ear. The coach nodded before looking back at the team.
"Oswin, you'll play more centrally." He pointed toward Maximilian. "Your first option is Maximilian."
Then his gaze shifted to Winston. "Winston... stay ready, but you'll remain on the bench for now." Disappointment washed over Winston, but he kept a straight face.
"We're switching to a 4-2-3-1," the coach continued. "Maximilian remains the target man. I want the wingers supporting him whenever we attack." He turned toward the defenders. "Back four, hold a high line. I also want aggressive offside traps. Midfield, protect the space in front of the defense."
He clapped once. "Come on, boys. We can still win this."
As the players stood to return to the pitch, Winston glanced at the Core System. The daily challenge was still there. The notification continued blinking. His shoulders slumped.
I still have to assist Maximilian... How am I supposed to do that if I'm not even playing?
A hand landed on his shoulder. "Don't let it get to you," Oswin said with a grin. "If you don't get on, I'll score one for you."
Winston looked up. Oswin gave him a thumbs-up before jogging toward the tunnel. A small smile crept onto Winston's face. It felt good knowing someone believed in him.
The second half began at a much higher intensity. Bush Hill Rangers also adjusted their tactics. Out of possession, they defended in a disciplined 4-1-4-1, with a holding midfielder shielding the back four. When they attacked, the shape quickly transformed into a fluid 4-3-3, allowing both wingers to push high and stretch Westminster's defense while creating crossing opportunities.
Westminster's new 4-2-3-1 was equally aggressive. The formation relied on the attacking midfielder and both wingers to support Maximilian, while the two holding midfielders protected the defense and recycled possession whenever attacks broke down.
The tactical battle became a chess match. Westminster patiently circulated the ball across the back line, attempting to lure Bush Hill's forwards into pressing. Bush Hill refused to overcommit. Every time Westminster looked for an opening, another Bush Hill player slid across to cover the space.
Finally, a Westminster defender attempted a forward pass through midfield. Bush Hill's center forward anticipated it perfectly. muscled the receiver off the ball, won possession cleanly, and immediately laid it back to a midfielder. Without taking a touch, the midfielder switched play to the goalkeeper. From there, Bush Hill calmly worked the ball across the back line—from goalkeeper to left-back, across the center-backs, and out to the right-back.
Westminster's players chased the ball, believing the press was working. That was exactly what Bush Hill wanted. The trap had been set. With one quick sequence of first-time passes, Bush Hill sliced through the press, and the ball reached their right winger in acres of space.
Thud!
Oswin read the play perfectly. He stepped into the passing lane and intercepted the ball, forcing Bush Hill Rangers to concede a throw-in. From the touchline, the Westminster coaching staff watched closely.
"Their formation is too fluid," one of the assistant coaches said. "They can switch from a quick counterattack to a solid defensive block in seconds."
The head coach folded his arms, his eyes fixed on the pitch.
"I think it's time we bring Winston on. We're lacking another attacking threat."
He glanced at Oswin.
"Playing him through the middle is restricting his game. He's much more dangerous drifting in from the left... or even the right."
The head striker coach was about to add his opinion, but the head coach had already made his decision.
"Winston!"
Winston sprang to his feet and jogged over. The head coach wrapped an arm around his shoulder and spoke firmly.
"Listen carefully. You're going in as the attacking midfielder." Winston nodded. "Your first priority is to support Maximilian. He's still our target man, so I want you creating chances for him."
The coach pointed toward the pitch. "Tell Oswin to drop deeper. I want him playing as the number eight."
Winston nodded again, committing every instruction to memory. The coach lowered his voice. "And one more thing." He pointed toward Bush Hill's defense. "Lukas Hickman. He's the heart of their back line. I want you to draw him out of position. If you can bait him into stepping forward, you'll create space behind him for Maximilian."
He looked Winston straight in the eye. "Can you do that?"
A determined smile spread across Winston's face. "Yes, Coach."
"Good."
The coach gave him a firm pat on the back. "Now get out there and change this game."
Thwack!
When they looked up at the scoreboard, it read 2–0. Bush Hill Rangers were already celebrating their second goal near the corner flag, their supporters erupting into deafening cheers.
Winston clenched his jaw. We conceded again... As he stepped toward the touchline, he caught Oswin's attention and motioned for him to come over.
"The coach wants you to drop into the number eight role," Winston said. "I'm taking over as the attacking midfielder."
Oswin let out a long, exhausted sigh before nodding.
"Finally," he muttered with a grin. "I was getting suffocated up there."
He bumped fists with Winston. "Go change this game."
Winston returned the fist bump, taking a deep breath as he mentally prepared himself before jogging onto the pitch.
