Chapter 7 - 7.Escape

The deep, freezing quiet of three in the morning held the roof in a chokehold. The raw, violent explosion that had shattered the group hours earlier,Ryker's cold execution of the cheerleader and the brutal punch Julian had leveled at his jaw had settled into a suffocating, hostile standoff.

Most of the students had eventually collapsed into an exhausted, terrified sleep, curling up against each other on the cold gravel. Ryker sat alone against a ventilation unit on the far side of the roof, his jaw swollen and throbbing where Julian's knuckles had split his skin. He had abandoned the aluminum bat; it was coated in the girl's dark fluid. Instead, he had quietly retrieved a heavy steel conduit handle from the maintenance pile nearby, his fingers tracing the cold metal.

Across the roof, Julian sat entirely isolated. He hadn't spoken to Ryker since the punch, nor had he looked at him.

Near the northern edge of the parapet, the tall basketball player ,the athlete Ryker still refused to think of by name was on his knees, peering down into the shadows of the central quad through a gap in the concrete wall. He had been monitoring the courtyard for an hour, watching the frantic, mindless sprinting of the turned students below.

But then, the athlete froze. His breath hitched, a faint, terrified gasp escaping his throat.

"Hey..." he whispered, his voice trembling so violently it barely carried across the roof. "Hey, someone... someone look at this."

Despite the icy wall between them, the sheer terror in the athlete's voice pulled Ryker to his feet. He gripped his steel handle and quietly crunched over to the ledge. Julian stirred from the shadows, blinking away exhaustion, and followed tightly behind, keeping a deliberate foot of distance between himself and Ryker.

"What is it?" Julian whispered, holding his iron pipe low, his voice rough and tight.

"Down there," the athlete pointed a shaking finger straight down into the pitch-black courtyard, right beneath the shadow of the main library entrance. "Near the statue. It's... it's not moving like the others."

Ryker leaned over the concrete ledge, squinting through his cracked glasses into the gloom.

At first, he saw the usual chaos three or four turned students sprinting aimlessly near the fountain. But then, standing completely still in the center of the dark lawn, he saw it.

It was a tall, unnaturally thin figure wearing the remnants of a school faculty blazer. Unlike the mindless hordes that paced, stumbled, or snarled at the air, this creature was perfectly, terrifyingly rigid. Its arms hung straight down at its sides.

But what made Ryker's stomach drop was its head.

It was tilted entirely backward, its neck craned at a sickening, near-snapped angle, looking directly up at the roofline. Even in the dim, flickering orange light of the distant fires, Ryker could see the dull reflection of its wide, unblinking milky eyes.

It wasn't wandering. It wasn't hunting. It was staring directly at them.

"Is it... is it looking at us?" the athlete whispered, his voice rising in panic. "How can it see us up here? We haven't made any noise!"

"Don't move," Ryker hissed, grabbing the athlete's shoulder and pulling him back an inch. "Just stay still."

As if responding to Ryker's whisper, the creature down in the quad did something that sent a wave of primal ice through all three boys. It slowly raised its left arm, its gray, pale fingers extending, and pointed a single, steady finger directly at the ledge where they were standing.

Then, its jaw unhinged, opening far wider than a human mouth should have been capable of. It didn't let out a mindless, animalistic howl. Instead, it emitted a sharp, high-pitched, rhythmic clicking sound like a predatory insect signaling a location.

Across the courtyard, dozens of the fast, sprinting zombies instantly stopped in their tracks. Their heads snapped toward the clicking creature, and then, as if receiving a silent command, they all turned their vacant eyes upward, staring straight at the roof.

The high-pitched clicking cut through the dead of night like a razor blade. It echoed off the concrete walls of the library and bounced straight up to the roof, a sound so cold and unnatural it made the hairs on Ryker's arms stand completely on end.

"Oh my god," the athlete whimpered, frantically backing away from the ledge on his hands and knees, his boots kicking up a loud, frantic flurry of gravel. "It knows. It knows we're up here!"

"Shut up!" Ryker hissed, but the damage was already done.

Down in the courtyard, the clicking abruptly stopped. The tall, rigid creature in the faculty blazer slowly lowered its pointed finger.

A second later, the silence of the campus was completely shattered.

The hundreds of fast, sprinting zombies that had been aiming blindly through the quad let out a collective, bloodcurdling shriek. It wasn't the aimless howling from before it was a coordinated, predatory roar. The entire horde turned as one massive, terrifying wave and charged directly toward the doors of the athletic center below.

The noise instantly woke the rest of the roof. Students bolted upright, screaming in confusion as the peaceful dark vanished into pure chaos.

"What's happening?!" a girl yelled, scrambling to her feet. "Is help here?!"

"No!" Julian shouted, his voice booming over the panic as he gripped his iron pipe, the hostility of the past few hours instantly overridden by his instinct to protect. His face turned pale as he looked over the edge. "They're coming! All of them!"

From deep inside the building, the heavy, muffled thudding against the maintenance door started up again. But it wasn't just one or two creatures testing the lock anymore. It sounded like a battering ram. The heavy steel door at the top of the stairwell began to rattle violently against its frame, the rusted security bolt Julian had slid into place groaning under the sudden, immense pressure of dozens of bodies slamming into it from the other side.

"The door isn't going to hold!" someone screamed, backing away toward the opposite ledge. "We're dead! We're trapped!"

Ryker's mind raced, his calculated instincts kicking back into overdrive. He looked at the main crowd, who were already losing their minds, pushing and shoving each other toward the far corner of the roof in a blind, useless panic. If they tried to bottleneck now, they would all die.

He caught Julian's eye through the gloom. The tension of the punch still hung between them, but survival dictated a truce.

"Julian," Ryker said, his voice deadly sharp as he stepped close, grabbing his friend's jacket. "The ventilation units. Behind the exhaust vents on the east side. There's an old maintenance fire ladder that drops straight into the faculty loading bay. It's obscure, no one uses it."

Julian blinked, the heavy fog of his grief and anger instantly burning away under the sudden spike of adrenaline.

"The loading bay? But Ry, the others—"

"If we tell them, someone falls and the noise brings them right to the bottom of the ladder," Ryker cut him off, his face hard, reminding Julian exactly who he was dealing with. "Look at the door, Jules. We have about thirty seconds."

As if on cue, a loud, metallic snap echoed across the roof. The rusted security bolt fractured under the weight. The maintenance door popped open a critical three inches, and pale, bloody fingers began clawing wildly through the gap.

"Go! Now!" Ryker yelled.

Instead of running into the center of the panic, Ryker and Julian ducked low, using the massive, shadow-drenched industrial AC units as cover. They sprinted away from the screaming crowd, heading toward the dark, forgotten corner of the eastern ledge.

Behind them, the door gave way completely with a deafening screech of tearing metal. The steel doors burst wide open, and the flood of fast, shrieking corpses erupted onto the gravel, plunging the roof into an absolute nightmare of screams and tearing fabric.

Ryker didn't look back. He rounded the final exhaust vent and found it the rusted, skeletal iron rungs of the maintenance ladder, plunging down into the pitch-black, silent shadows of the loading bay below.

Ryker swung his legs over the cold concrete parapet, his boots finding the first rusted rung of the maintenance ladder. He dropped down a few feet, his grip tight on the metal as he looked up, expecting Julian to be right on his heels.

Instead, Julian hesitated at the ledge.

He looked back over his shoulder at the absolute slaughterhouse the roof had become. The screams of their classmates were deafening, the gravel flying as people ran blindly from the horde erupting out of the stairwell.

Julian's righteous, heroic instincts the same ones that had driven him to punch Ryker to protect a ghost kicked right back in. He couldn't just slip away into the dark and leave everyone to get torn apart.

"There's a ladder over here! East ledge! Behind the vents!" Julian roared at the top of his lungs, his voice booming over the chaos.

You idiot, Ryker cursed violently in his mind, his knuckles turning white against the iron rungs. You absolute, brainless idiot.

Ryker didn't waste time arguing. He scrambled down the ladder as fast as his limbs could move, the cold metal biting into his palms. He knew exactly what Julian's big mouth had just done.

Above him, Julian finally threw his legs over the wall and began his descent, but the damage was already done. Julian's shout had acted like a lighthouse in a storm. Through the dark, a frantic stampede of footsteps immediately shifted focus, abandoning the center of the roof and tearing toward the eastern ledge.

"A ladder! He found a way down!" a voice shrieked through the dark.

"Move! Get out of my way!" another student screamed.

Within seconds, a wave of panicked teenagers hit the corner behind the exhaust vents. Ryker looked up through the darkness and saw a mass of desperate faces peering over the ledge, completely blocking out the dim orange light of the fires.

The weight of the first few students hit the top of the ladder before Julian had even cleared the top ten rungs. Someone stepped directly onto Julian's hands, causing him to let out a sharp yell of pain. The sheer, blind desperation of the crowd was turning the narrow metal escape route into a violent bottleneck, just as Ryker had predicted. They were shoving, pulling at each other's clothes, and scrambling over the wall without any regard for who was below them.

And right behind the wave of students, the fast, clicking shrieks of the turned horde were getting closer.

"Get down! Keep moving!" Julian yelled upward, his voice strained as a heavy sneaker slammed onto his shoulder. A terrified girl was practically sliding down the rungs above him, her knees digging into his back in her frantic rush to escape.

"I can't go any faster!" Ryker shouted from below, his boots hitting the rusted iron with jarring speed.

The narrow metal ladder groaned under the sudden, immense weight of half a dozen teenagers all crowding onto the rungs at once. Up on the ledge, the bottleneck turned vicious. Screams of terror morphed into shrieks of fury as students began violently shoving each other out of the way just to reach the drop-off.

Suddenly, a piercing, wet shriek echoed from the very top of the ledge.

The fast zombies had reached the exhaust vents.

Through the grid of the iron rungs, Ryker looked up and saw a horrific silhouette block out the sky. A turned student had lunged over the parapet, its jaws snapping blindly into the crowd. It collided with a boy trying to force his way onto the ladder. The impact sent both of them barreling forward, breaking through the desperate line of students.

The boy didn't grab the ladder.

His hands flailed in the empty air, catching nothing but wind.

With a sickening, heavy thud, his body collided violently with Julian's back on the way down, stripping Julian's grip right off the rusted iron. Julian let out a choked gasp as he was ripped from the ladder, plunging into the dark emptiness of the loading bay.

The student and the zombie struck the concrete pavement below with a horrific, bone-shattering crack just twenty feet away from Ryker.

Julian fell right after them, crashing heavily into a pile of discarded wooden pallets stacked against the facility wall. The wood splintered with a deafening screech, absorbing some of the impact, but Julian hit the ground hard, rolling onto the asphalt with a sharp groan of agony.

"Julian!" Ryker yelled.

He dropped the last six feet, landing in a tight crouch that rattled his teeth, his steel handle clattering against the ground.

Up above, the ladder was a nightmare of tangled limbs and screaming kids, but Ryker didn't have time to look. The noise of the falls had already alerted the things in the immediate area. From the shadows of the faculty parking lot, low, guttural growls began to answer the chaos.

Ryker scrambled over the splintered wood, his hands finding Julian's jacket in the dark.

"Jules! Get up! We have to move right now!"

Julian was gasping for air, his face twisted in pure agony as he clutched his side. He tried to push himself up, but his arm buckled under his weight.

"My... my ribs," he wheezed, tears of sheer pain and exhaustion finally spilling over his eyes. "Ry, I can't... I can't breathe."

"You can breathe later," Ryker hissed, his own adrenaline spiking as he grabbed Julian under his good armpit and forcefully dragged him to his feet. Julian let out a ragged, strangled cry, but he forced his legs to lock, leaning his massive frame heavily against Ryker.

The loading bay was a dead end if they stayed in the open. Ryker's eyes darted frantically through the gloom until they landed on a heavy, metal security door labeled Basement Maintenance – Authorized Personnel Only. It was a risky, subterranean trap, but the parking lot was already filling with fast-moving shadows sprinting toward the sound of the splinters.

Ryker dragged Julian toward the door, throwing his weight against the heavy lever handle. It gave way with a loud, echoing click. He shoved Julian into the pitch-black corridor inside, slipped in behind him, and slammed the heavy door shut just as a pale, blood-slicked hand slapped violently against the outside metal.

Ryker threw the heavy deadbolt, locking them inside.

The darkness was instant and absolute.
