Chapter 13 - 13.Forced Entry

Ryker sat on the edge of the massive bed, his bare feet sinking into the pristine fibers of the rug. The silence of the guest room was absolute, but his mind remained sharp, pivoting back to the one variable that actually mattered.

The System.

He recalled the floating text that had flashed during the initial chaos outside, and Cassian's mention of a "ninety-eight percent synchronization rate." In the dark web novels he'd used to kill time, the rules were usually the same. There was always an interface. A prompt. A trigger.

Ryker sat up straighter, staring blindly into the empty air in front of him.

"System," he muttered flatly.

Nothing happened. The ambient darkness didn't stir.

A slight frown creased his forehead. His voice dropped into a firmer, more deliberate cadence. "Open System."

Still, the room remained entirely still, the void mocking his attempt.

Ryker wasn't deterred. There had to be a backdoor a command protocol that forced a connection, especially since his synchronization hadn't been fully mapped by standard means. He focused his mind entirely inward, searching for the foreign weight humming beneath his skin, and dragged it to the surface.

"Status Window," he rasped, pushing a cold edge of intent into the words. "Interface. Awaken."

For a split second, the air in front of his face rippled like disturbed water.

Sensing the crack in the barrier, Ryker locked onto that specific frequency. He forced his thoughts to expand, mentally slamming against the invisible wall keeping his data locked away. He didn't request access; he commanded it, treating the System not as some divine entity, but as a piece of software to be broken into.

Open.

With a sudden, violent jolt that vibrated right through his skull, the air fractured. A sharp, static hum shrieked in his ears as a series of glowing, translucent panels burst into existence.

The System had been forcibly pried open.

The blue panels flickered, casting an artificial glare over Ryker's unblinking eyes. And then, a jarring realization hit him.

The text was perfectly crisp. The glowing words were razor-sharp, cutting through the ambiguous blur of his unassisted vision with absolute clarity. The System didn't rely on his damaged retinas; it injected the data directly into his consciousness.

For the first time tonight, the world wasn't a smear of shadows. He could finally see.

[ SYSTEM INTERFACE: FORCED ACCESS DETECTED ]

User Identity: Ryker

Synchronization Status: Unmapped / Irregular

Warning: Connection forced prior to standard optimization protocols.

Ryker leaned forward, scanning the lines with clinical detachment. He ignored the flashing red warning logs about his forced entry, his eyes locking onto the raw data of his own existence.

[ CURRENT ATTRIBUTES ]

Strength: 24 / 100

Agility: 26 / 100

Vitality: 22 / 100

Intelligence: 45 / 100

Perception: 38 / 100

[ UNASSIGNED ATTRIBUTE POINTS: 0 ]

A hundred. Ryker stared at the denominator, assuming it represented the absolute pinnacle of human capability. His own scores the mid-twenties in his physical stats just meant he wasn't completely pathetic. His higher marks in Perception and Intelligence were simply his baseline, the standard for someone who relied entirely on hyper-awareness to navigate a world he couldn't see.

His gaze drifted to the right panel, where the Skill Tree branched out like a fractured nervous system.

It wasn't categorized by heroic roles like 'Warrior' or 'Mage'. It was an expansive network of locked, grayed-out nodes that looked deeply biological—almost parasitic.

Right at the center of the screen, bridging the gap between his stats and the locked nodes, a final, isolated notification pulsed slowly in dark, ominous text:

[ UNIQUE PROTOCOL LOCKED ]

Condition for First Evolution: Unfulfilled.

Current Progress: 0%

He squinted, searching for a sub-menu or a hidden description, but the text remained static. He focused his intent on the words, demanding an explanation of what the "First Evolution" actually entailed, but the interface offered nothing. No checklist, no quest log, no hints.

Without data, guessing was just a waste of mental energy.

Ryker let out a short, quiet exhale and simply dismissed it. The apocalypse had just begun, and the system would eventually reveal its rules as he forced his way forward. With a thought, he closed the screens.

Instead of the interface closing cleanly, Ryker's mind suddenly slipped. His consciousness pushed too deep, breaking through a layer of the interface that shouldn't have been malleable.

A suffocating pressure slammed into his chest, stealing the air from his lungs as strings of unencrypted code began to rewrite themselves directly onto his retinas.

Ryker's heart hammered violently against his ribs. A vessel? True nature of the Cataclysm? He pushed his mind even further, desperate to read the next line, his fingers clawing into the bedsheets. He just needed one more second—

The System noticed him.

A deafening, metallic shriek echoed directly inside his skull, loud enough to make his ears bleed. The violet text violently shattered into jagged shards of white static.

[ CRITICAL INTRUSION DETECTED ]

[ EMERGENCY PURGE INITIATED: USER FORCEFULLY EJECTED ]

The forced ejection was instantaneous and brutal.

The immense psychic pressure short-circuited his entire nervous system. Before Ryker could even grasp a single thought, his consciousness was instantly severed. His limp frame slipped off the edge of the bed, collapsing onto the rug with a dull thud.Everything went blank as he lost consciousness.

When Ryker finally woke up, the first thing he registered was a suffocating, metallic warmth.

He was lying face-down on the floor, his head throbbing with a sickening pulse as he dragged himself back from the blackout. He rolled over onto his back, his breath hitching as a hot, thick liquid spilled from his nostrils, smearing across his cheek. He reached up with a trembling hand, his fingers brushing against his upper lip. They came away slick and stained a deep crimson.

The physical toll of prying into the System's restricted vaults had nearly liquidated his brain. It was a brutal, humbling setback. He had pushed too far, too fast, and his human flesh had paid the price.

But as he lay there, staring blindly up at the ceiling through the dark haze of his unassisted vision, he realized the darkness wasn't absolute.

Hovering in the center of the room, burning with a blood-red luminescence that cut straight through his physical blur, was a massive text box.

[ GLOBAL CALIBRATION PHASE: COMPLETE ]

[ PREPARATION TIME REMAINING: 00:00:00 ]

[ STAGE 1: THE INITIATION HAS BEGUN ]

The bleeding red of the numbers pulse-flashed a single time, the triple zeros glaring like a death sentence.

The exact millisecond the text stabilized at zero, a sudden, massive boom vibrated through the floorboards, rattling the glass windows so violently that the frames groaned. It wasn't the sound of thunder. It was a structural collapse concussive, and coming from somewhere deep inside the lower levels of the mansion itself.

The four-hour grace period was over. The danger wasn't outside anymore.

The shockwave of the blast seemed to snap Ryker's hyper-vigilance back into place, the adrenaline overriding the blinding pain in his skull. Ignoring the slick trail of blood still dripping down his neck, he forced his body up from the floor. His muscles coiled with predatory readiness.

Moving with absolute silence, he glided toward the heavy wooden door, using the back of his forearm to wipe the remaining blood from his lip. His hand wrapped around the cold brass lock.

Downstairs, right on cue, the first high-pitched scream of pure terror cut through the mansion's quiet air, followed immediately by the sharp crack of someone firing a weapon.

The true game had officially begun.

The heavy wooden door flew open. Ryker stepped out into the dimly lit corridor, his hand frantically shoving his glasses up the bridge of his nose. He had snatched them from the bedside table in a split-second panic, desperate for sight, and the sudden influx of sharp, crisp details was almost overwhelming. The air in the upper hallway was already thick with the scent of freshly spilled blood.

Before he could even orient himself, a frantic figure tore around the corner.

The impact was brutal. A body slammed directly into his chest with the momentum of a runaway freight train. The sheer velocity caught Ryker off guard, knocking him completely off his feet. He hit the hardwood floor hard, the breath whistling out of his lungs as the other person tumbled over him in a tangled, chaotic heap.

It was one of the survivors from the courtyard a young woman whose face was completely twisted into a mask of pure terror. Every horrifying detail was starkly visible: her wide, bloodshot eyes and the tears tracking through the dirt on her skin.

Ryker's hands instinctively coiled, ready to snap her neck if she posed a threat, but she didn't even acknowledge him. She didn't notice the blood still dripping from his nose, nor did she care who she had just run down. To her, he was just an obstacle.

Scrambling like a wild animal, her fingernails clawed at the polished floorboards as she struggled to find her footing. Her entire existence was reduced to a singular, desperate urge to flee.

"Move! Get the fuck out of my way!" she shrieked, her voice cracking into a raw, ragged sob.

She kicked out wildly, her sneaker catching Ryker sharply in the ribs as she scrambled over his legs. Shoving herself off the wall, she threw herself down the opposite end of the hallway, her frantic footsteps fading into the shadows as she bolted toward a dead-end wing of the estate.

Ryker didn't move immediately. He lay flat on his back, his unblinking eyes tracking the ceiling. The impact had re-opened the veins in his nose, and a fresh warmth began to trickle down his cheek.

Slowly, deliberately, he sat up, wiping his face with a bloody finger.

If a human being was reduced to that level of primal, screaming madness within the first ten seconds of the Initiation, then whatever was waiting at the bottom of those stairs wasn't just dangerous.

It was a slaughterhouse.
