Chapter 8 - Chapter 8- UNKNOWN

Josh realized he had stopped listening somewhere near the end.

Augustus Silar's voice still carried clearly across the hall, it was steady, refined, backed by years of authority but it flowed past Josh rather than into him.

He caught pieces instead of meaning, Carefully chosen words about educational reform, strategic investment, and the responsibility of institutions in uncertain times drifted through his mind like distant echoes.

It wasn't that the speech lacked substance.

It was that something else kept pulling at his attention.

Josh sat still, hands resting loosely on his thighs, posture composed.

Outwardly, he looked like every other student listening politely, Inwardly, his thoughts were busy cataloging details tone shifts, pauses, the way Silar emphasized certain phrases when mentioning scholarships and "selective opportunities."

"He's here to recruit," Josh thought. Or at least to remind people he can.

The name settled firmly in his mind: Augustus Silar. High-ranking; Political;Influential, The kind of man who didn't appear in places like this unless there was something to gain.

Josh glanced around.....

Rows upon rows of students filled the massive hall, easily two thousand or more, Sophomores, juniors, seniors each group separated subtly by seating arrangement.

Above them, the ceiling arched high, reinforced with layered composite beams designed to distribute stress evenly.

The academy hadn't spared expense here. Even the walls carried a muted sheen, layered with sound-dampening and reinforcement materials.

A place built to endure pressure...

That thought lingered.

He shifted slightly and felt it again that faint, crawling sensation at the back of his neck. He felt something but.....More like... anticipation.

The same feeling he used to get just before a mission briefing took an unexpected turn.

Aegis, he thought quietly.

No response.

Still, the presence was there subtle, watchful.

Silar's speech moved toward its conclusion.

His words turned broader now, less technical, more inspirational. He spoke of the academy's legacy, of shaping minds that would one day stand at the forefront of progress.

Applause rose once, then faded as he lifted a hand.

Then-

The floor trembled.....

At first, it was so mild that Josh wondered if he'd imagined it. He felt a faint vibration passed through the soles of his shoes, like distant thunder traveling through the ground. A few students frowned.

Someone chuckled nervously.

Then it came again a little harder and violently,

The hall shuddered violently, Light fixtures rattled as A low groan rolled through the walls as if the building itself had exhaled sharply, Gasps erupted across the room.

Several students cried out in alarm.

Josh's spine went rigid.

That was no earthquake it almost felt like it but it wasn't.....

His instincts snapped awake fully now, sharp and merciless and screaming.

Danger

The sensation surged through him like cold ink spreading under the skin heavy, urgent, undeniable.

It was the same feeling he'd felt in his other life just seconds before ambush....

Around him, the mood fractured.

"What was that?"

"Did something explode?"

"Is this part of the program?"

On the far side of the hall, a security guard pressed a hand to his earpiece and raised his walkie-talkie.

"Control, report," he said firmly. "We felt an impact. What's going on outside?"

Only static answered.

The guard frowned and tried again Louder this time but it was more static.

His partner stepped closer, face tightening. "Signal interference?"

"I don't like this," the first guard muttered.

He adjusted his grip on the radio, then nodded once.

"I'll check. You stay here."

The doors near the stage opened briefly as he stepped out, boots echoing sharply against the floor.

They closed behind him with a heavy thud.

Josh's eyes followed the movement, his pulse steady but elevated. He scanned the hall, noting exits, guard placements, the density of the crowd. Old habits surfaced without effort.

On stage, Augustus Silar had already been joined by his personal security detail. The shift was subtle but unmistakable. The guards leaned in, murmuring quickly. Silar's expression tightened just for a fraction of a second before he nodded.

The speech was over.

The applause that followed was scattered and confused, fading quickly as uncertainty took hold.

Josh felt it then a faint tightening in his chest.

Something was wrong it felt very wrong.

Minutes passed....Too many....

A murmur spread through the hall as whispers overlapped. Students twisted in their seats, craning their necks toward the doors. A few tried to stand, only to be gestured back down by security.

Then-

A scream tore through the air.

It came from outside the hall, Distant, yet piercing enough to cut straight through the walls. It wasn't a shout or a cry for attention.

It was raw terror...

The hall went silent.

Even breathing seemed to pause.

Josh's fingers curled slowly into his palms.

That scream wasn't just a normal screaming it was panic, a human in desperation.

Silence followed it felt Thick and Suffocating in the air.

Then chaos followed as voices erupted everywhere at once. Students surged to their feet, panic blooming like fire in dry grass.

"What was that?!"

"Open the doors!"

"Is this an attack?!"

Several students rushed the exits, only to stop short when they found the doors locked. The academy had sealed them earlier as a standard protocol during high-level visits.

Fear spiked.

The senior academy official rushed forward, voice amplified. "Everyone remain calm! Stay where you are! Security is handling the situation!"

Terrorists, someone whispered nearby.

Josh shook his head slowly

No.

This wasn't a coordinated attack. The feeling crawling through his veins told him that much.

Aegis, he thought again.

This time, something stirred faintly in response not words, but a tightening awareness, like a system waking from dormancy.

On the edge of the crowd, another security guard raised his walkie-talkie, voice tight with urgency.

"Respond. Do you read me? What's happening out there?"

Statics.....

His jaw clenched. He turned sharply and headed toward the senior academy official, speaking in hushed but urgent tones. Josh couldn't hear the words, but he didn't need to.

The guard looked afraid.

Outside, noise began to build.

Shouting, Running footsteps.

Something heavy slamming into metal.

The doors shuddered once more...

A few girls screamed. Others clutched each other, shaking. Guards formed a loose perimeter, hands hovering near their weapons.

Josh rose to his feet

His senses of danger reached its peak, sharp and overwhelming.

This was the moment before everything collapsed.

"Josh..."

He turned.

Mira stood just behind him, eyes wide, face pale. She looked like she was holding herself together by sheer will.

He stepped closer and placed a hand on her shoulder.

She flinched, then immediately grabbed his wrist, gripping it tightly as if anchoring herself.

"Something's really wrong," she whispered.

"I know," Josh replied softly.

Security began directing students toward the rear of the hall, where the emergency routes, service and stairwells were...Communication systems were failing. Whatever was happening outside was blocking signals completely.

The noise beyond the walls grew louder.
