The sun was just beginning to filter through the ship's circular windows when Suki opened her eyes.
She had slept restlessly.
Not from fear… but from a new feeling in the air.
A tension that wasn't hostile, but was powerful, as if the emotions of the entire ship were revolving around a single point.
Ren.
She got up, fixed her hair, and went out into the hallway.
The smell of warm metal, ocean breeze, and salted wood permeated the air.
The footsteps and voices of the soldiers were distant; the ship seemed almost empty.
Almost.
Halfway down the hall, Suki stopped.
In front of her were Ren, Azula, and Ty Lee.
All three together.
Ren was leaning against the wall, relaxed, with his arms crossed and his hair loose falling over one shoulder.
His eyes—that unsettling mix of serenity and danger—were fixed on Azula, who was speaking with a calculated calm.
Ty Lee was to the side, closer to Ren than usual, with her hands clasped behind her back and a soft smile, but… different.
Less childish.
More confident.
Suki took a deep breath and observed.
Ren noticed her presence first.
—"Good morning, Suki," he greeted with that calm voice that always seemed to pierce right through her.
Azula turned her face toward her.
There was no hostility, but a kind of territorial acceptance.
Ty Lee smiled with genuine joy.
—"Suki! Good morning! Ren was just telling us about today's strategy."
Suki blinked.
—"All three of you together?" she asked, trying to sound casual.
Azula was the one who answered.
—"We have new roles," she said with confidence. "And we're fulfilling them."
Suki felt a small pang in her heart… not of jealousy, but of alertness.
She recognized that glint in Azula's eyes.
That glint meant possession.
And Ty Lee…
Ty Lee was radiating a calm, almost luminous devotion toward Ren.
A devotion Suki hadn't seen before.
Ren, however, seemed comfortable in the middle of both of them.
Too comfortable.
—"We were talking about emotional discipline," Ren continued. "It's an aspect you both need to strengthen."
Azula lifted her chin with pride.
—"I already master that subject."
Ren barely smiled.
—"Discipline isn't just about controlling emotions," he corrected. "It's about using them.
Channeling them.
Turning them into power without letting them consume you."
Azula stood still.
She was the first person he had seen correct so directly… without her getting angry.
Ty Lee chimed in, excited.
—"Ren says my inner balance is useful, but that I need to learn to… focus it."
Ren placed a hand on Ty Lee's shoulder.
Suki noticed.
And so did Azula.
But neither reacted.
It was as if a tacit agreement governed their dynamic.
Suki took a deep breath before approaching.
—"And what are we supposed to do today?" she asked.
Ren withdrew his hand from Ty Lee and straightened up, walking toward her with soft steps.
—"Today, a new phase begins," he said. "And you three are fundamental to it."
Suki felt a shiver run down her spine as Ren stopped in front of her.
—"Azula represents my fire," he continued. "The force that dominates and destroys."
Azula smiled with icy satisfaction.
—"Ty Lee represents my air," he went on. "The lightness, the unpredictable, that which disarms without being seen."
Ty Lee straightened up, proud.
Ren extended a hand toward Suki.
He didn't touch her.
He just left it hanging centimeters from her arm.
—"And you…
you will be my earth.
The firmness.
The strategy.
The stability.
The connection with the people."
Suki felt the air leave her lungs.
It was too much.
And at the same time… it all made sense.
Ren slowly lowered his hand and let it fall to his side.
—"The three elements surrounding me," he said in a low, almost hypnotic voice. "Fire… air… earth.
The three forces that will sustain my Company.
And my expansion."
Azula smiled.
Ty Lee did too.
Suki, without wanting to, felt a stab of pride.
Ren watched the three of them with a gaze that was almost a caress.
—"Starting today," he declared, "our connection will grow stronger.
Our roles will deepen.
And your loyalty… will be rewarded."
Azula nodded with contained devotion.
Ty Lee with excited joy.
Suki… with a deep silence.
All three of them followed him.
In different ways.
But they followed him.
And Ren knew it.
With one last look at each of them, Ren smiled softly.
—"Come.
We have work to do."
The three women followed him.
And for the first time, Suki noticed that Azula and Ty Lee were walking together, synchronized… not as enemies.
But as two pieces of the same empire.
Ren's empire.
The main tent of the White Lotus camp was lit by oil lamps, casting long shadows that seemed to extend like roots from the maps spread across the table. Ren was leaning over one of them, studying routes, trade flows, and rumors marked with light ink.
The entire Earth Kingdom network—at least the part that mattered—was already buzzing with his name.
But now there was a new point.
Gaoling.
A prosperous city. Hermetic. Ancient.
Ren let his finger rest on the small circle that represented it as he slowly exhaled. He didn't need to say anything: the gesture, the look, the tense posture of his back already indicated that he had found something.
Azula, sitting in a chair as if the camp belonged to a palace, smiled with superiority.
—"That look of yours means you've just located your next target."
Ren looked up without smiling.
—"My next piece."
Suki, leaning discreetly against the central mast of the tent, watched the map with a mix of respect and calculation.
—"Gaoling…" she murmured. "It's a pretty controlled place. They don't let just anyone in."
—"That's why we're going," Ren replied, his eyes not leaving the map.
Tier Harribel stood behind him, standing, watchful. Her silence was part of her presence: firm, solemn, as calm as a calm ocean. Her golden skin contrasted with the white she now wore as the White Lotus emblem.
She narrowed her eyes at the marked point.
—"I've heard that name many times during my travels," she said in a low voice. "They say their people are proud… and very selective about who they call allies."
Ren nodded slowly, as if her comment confirmed what he already suspected.
—"Precisely why we need them.
I don't want easy allies," he murmured. "I want valuable allies."
Azula raised an eyebrow.
—"And what's the plan this time? Go in, smile, conquer with words… or burn something down until they cooperate?"
—"I don't always need fire to change a world," Ren replied, moving closer to her, his voice barely a warm thread. "Sometimes, it's enough for them to realize who represents stability… and who doesn't."
Ty Lee was sitting cross-legged on a crate, wiggling her feet in the air.
—"Gaoling sounds nice! And what exactly are we looking for there?"
Ren looked at her with firmness.
—"A strategic point for the White Lotus's expansion.
And a talent I don't want to fall into the wrong hands."
Ty Lee blinked, intrigued, but Ren offered no further explanation.
Mai looked up from her position in the shadows.
—"Sounds like we're getting closer to the heart of the Earth Kingdom."
—"We're getting closer," Ren confirmed. "But we haven't knocked on the main door yet."
Keiko tightened her gloves as she watched the map.
—"So… when do we leave?"
Ren rolled the parchment up with surgical precision.
—"In two hours.
Gaoling is waiting for us."
Azula moved closer to him and brushed his arm with her fingers, a sharp smile on her lips.
—"And what if the city resists us?"
Ren smiled, this time with that lethal calm that made everyone in the tent hold their breath.
—"Nothing resists when it knows its future depends on you."
Harribel bowed her head slightly, recognizing the truth in those words.
Suki took a deep breath, preparing herself. Something in her chest tightened: a premonition… or a feeling that what they would find in Gaoling would change the shape of the White Lotus forever.
Ren walked toward the tent's exit.
The night wind whipped his white cloak.
—"Prepare everything," he ordered. "It's time to advance."
Behind him, Azula followed with a smile.
Suki followed with a sigh.
Harribel followed with a firm step.
Ty Lee jumped up behind them.
Mai walked in silence.
Keiko adjusted her belt and nodded.
The White Lotus was on the move again.
And Gaoling… still didn't know its fate was already decided.
The afternoon was beginning to turn golden as the White Lotus camp prepared to break down. The wind kicked up small clouds of dust, and the smell of dry earth mixed with the scent of dying campfires. Among all the members walking by carrying boxes, checking mounts, or sharpening weapons, Ren scanned the crowd for Suri.
He found her a few meters away, cleaning her spear with a damp cloth, standing next to a cart. Her movements were precise, disciplined, but every so often her gaze would drift toward Ren with a silent intensity. He had noticed it for days: Suri, with her cutting strength and her steel-like demeanor, was a tamed beast in appearance only. Inside, she vibrated.
And Ren knew exactly how to use that.
—"Suri," he called, his voice soft yet striking her like an order.
She looked up immediately. Her dark eyes—intense like a predator's in constant alert—scrutinized him before she inclined her head slightly.
—"Do you need me, Ren?"
—"Come. Let's walk."
She asked no more. Suri set the spear down by the cart, wiped her hands on her tight, slightly torn black leather pants, and followed him. Her posture was firm, shoulders squared, steps silent despite the light armor she wore.
Ren led her away from the camp's noise, toward an area of only dry grass and rocks. The silence there was more intimate, almost expectant.
When he stopped, he slowly turned to face her.
—"You've been distant," he said, without accusation, just stating a fact.
Suri blinked, surprised by the precision with which he'd read her.
—"I… have been observing," she replied, crossing her arms. "Gaoling seems… different from what I imagined. I don't know what you hope to gain there."
Ren took a step toward her. Not aggressive. Not invasive. But close enough for her to feel his presence. Suri tensed her jaw… but didn't retreat.
—"I want something big," he said, his voice low, deep. "Something that can only be achieved with loyal hands… competent hands… hands that don't hesitate."
His eyes settled on hers.
—"Like yours."
Suri's breathing grew slightly heavier. A muscle in her neck contracted. That simple recognition, from someone she already respected too much, penetrated deeper than she expected.
—"I will do whatever you need," she answered after a second, trying to sound distant. She didn't quite succeed.
Ren tilted his head slightly, a half-smile appearing.
—"I know. But I want more than obedience from you, Suri."
The wind blew, lifting a few strands of her hair—dark, shiny, disciplined like her—that brushed her tense jaw. Ren reached out and, without touching her, moved one of those strands simply with the movement of the air, controlling it with an almost imperceptible warmth.
That gesture… that precise control… made Suri swallow.
Ren lowered his hand.
—"I want your conviction. I want your absolute certainty that what we're seeking… what I'm seeking… will change this world."
Suri breathed deeply, her chest rising and falling with a barely perceptible tremor. The light armor marked her athletic physique perfectly, every muscle prepared for combat. A part of her wanted to remain cold. The other… burned.
—"Since I've been following you…" she whispered, "I've seen more changes than in my entire previous life. I've seen order where there was chaos, purpose where there was only war."
She stopped. And lowered her gaze for a second. Just a second.
—"I… trust you. More than I should."
Ren lifted her chin with two soft fingers, forcing her to look at him. She didn't move, but something in her breathing broke for a moment.
—"It's no more than I need," he murmured. "And it's no more than I'm asking of you."
Suri closed her eyes for a moment, surrendering to the intensity of his words, before opening them again, now focused, now firm.
—"Then… what are your orders?"
Ren released her chin and took a step back, letting the cold air return between them.
—"I want you to go first," he said. "Before anyone else.
Find the earthbending arena. Observe. Listen. Don't speak more than necessary.
And when you arrive, I want the guards to believe you are an emissary from the White Lotus elite… because you are."
Suri's heart hammered hard. That mission… wasn't a simple errand. It was a direct test of trust. One of the most important.
Ren continued:
—"Someone in Gaoling is attracting a lot of attention. We don't know who. We don't know how. But I want you to be there when they find out."
Suri nodded, very slowly.
—"I will."
Ren approached her one last time. A light touch on her shoulder. Barely a brush. But enough to make the hand she had on her belt tremble.
—"I don't doubt it."
Suki took a deep breath, mastering the emotion that tried to rebel within her, and took a step back.
—"I'll leave right now."
Ren watched her bow her head with respect, turn on her heel, and start running toward the path that led to Gaoling. Her silhouette, dark and precise, sank into the distance, swallowed by the shadows of the sunset.
Ren watched her until she disappeared.
His smile was light. Satisfied.
—"One more piece in place," he murmured. "And the board keeps growing."
