Chapter 20 - Chapter 18 The Softest Things Were the Hardest to Say

It was strange how comfort arrived.

Not all at once.

Not loudly.

Just in small moments that didn't ask for attention.

Like the way Nicole remembered how Sara took her tea.

Like the way Sara started waiting for his messages without feeling guilty about it.

They were sitting together in a quiet café, knees brushing under the table, sharing one notebook between them—filled with nothing important.

Random thoughts. Half-written lines. Little doodles.

"This is terrible," Nicole said, pointing at a crooked drawing.

Sara leaned in. "It's cute."

"It looks like a confused potato."

"A thoughtful potato," she corrected, smiling.

He laughed, shaking his head. "You're biased."

"Maybe," she said softly. "But I like the way you exist."

That made him still.

He looked at her—not startled, just… moved.

"I don't think anyone's ever said that to me," he admitted.

She looked embarrassed now, fingers tracing the edge of the notebook.

"I didn't mean it in a big way."

"That's why it matters," he replied gently.

They fell quiet after that, but it wasn't awkward. Just full.

After a while, Sara spoke again—voice quieter this time.

"Do you ever feel like you're learning someone slowly? Like you don't want to rush knowing them?"

Nicole nodded. "I want to know you in layers. Not summaries."

Her smile softened.

She reached for his hand without thinking. When she realized she had, she didn't pull away.

"You make things feel… gentle," she said.

"And I didn't know I needed that."

He squeezed her hand, just once.

"I didn't know I could be that for someone."

Later, when they walked outside, the sky was turning pink and gold, the day folding into evening.

Sara stopped suddenly.

"Hey," she said.

He turned. "Yeah?"

She hesitated, then leaned forward and kissed his cheek—quick, shy, warm.

"Just because," she said, already blushing.

Nicole stood there for a second, stunned.

Then he smiled—slow, genuine, a little overwhelmed.

That night, as they texted goodnight, Sara realized something deep and quiet:

Love didn't feel like losing control anymore.

It felt like being understood

without having to explain everything.

And Nicole?

He went to sleep knowing this—

if the world ever became too loud,

this softness would be worth protecting.
