Chapter 19 - Chapter 17 The Kind of Conversations That Stay

They didn't plan it.

It just… happened.

Nicole and Sara sat side by side on the rooftop later that evening, legs stretched out, sharing silence the way people do when words no longer feel urgent.

The city lights blinked below them like tiny promises.

"I used to think quiet meant boring," Nicole said suddenly.

Sara smiled faintly. "Me too. Now it feels… safe."

He nodded. "With you, it does."

She leaned back on her hands, looking up at the sky.

"Can I tell you something without you trying to fix it?"

"Always," he said.

She took a breath.

"I'm scared this will end someday. Not because of you. Just because… good things usually do."

Nicole didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he shifted closer.

"Then let's not live like it's ending," he said softly.

"Let's live like it's happening."

Her chest tightened—not painfully, but warmly

"I don't need forever promises," she said.

"I just need honesty while it lasts."

He turned toward her. "Then here's mine."

She met his eyes.

"I'm not perfect," he continued. "I'll mess up. I'll overthink. I'll get scared again."

A small smile.

"But I won't disappear."

She believed him.

Not because he said it—but because he stayed quiet after, letting the words settle instead of decorating them.

Sara rested her head on his shoulder.

They talked about small things after that.

Childhood memories.

Things they loved but never told anyone.

Dreams that felt too fragile to say out loud before.

Time passed unnoticed.

When they finally stood to leave, Sara realized something important.

This wasn't about falling anymore.

This was about choosing.

And they were doing it—slowly, gently, without fear.

As they walked down the stairs together,

she thought:

If this story had to end one day…

she was glad it sounded like this in the middle.
