Logan's mouth fell open.
"Mermaid?"
He said the word like it tasted strange on his tongue, like he wasn't sure if it was a joke or a trap. His eyes were wide, fixed on Nathan, searching his face for even the smallest sign of teasing.
I looked from Logan to Nathan.
"Wait," I said slowly, squinting. "You people have mermaids too?"
Nathan didn't look at me. He was still staring at his brother. "They're real," he said quietly. "I've seen one with my own eyes."
I blinked.
Then I pointed at him. "Hold on. You've seen one? With your own eyes? And you're just saying that like you saw a bird or something?"
He finally glanced at me, calm as always. "Yes."
"If you've seen one," Logan said slowly, voice tight, "why the hell are you asking us to get one for you? Because I know for a fact I've never seen a mermaid before. Last time I checked, they were myth."
Nathan smiled like he had been waiting for that.
