The upper district of the city of Nasiru had always seemed like another world to Kai. 

Everything here felt new. 

Even the floor, giving way from rough cobblestones to smooth, well-maintained flagstone, seemed as though it had never felt the touch of a broken cart wheel or the sharp, needle-like claws of kimaries. 

There were no signs of the slums here. No weathered red brick, no faded murals, and no gallows. 

But it also missed the very things that Kai loved about the centre of the market town; the sprawling mismatch of old and new, the colourful awnings that stretched from building to building, and the scent of spice and - life. 

Here, the streets were wide and clean, open to the sky and sapped of colour in a way that was glaringly deliberate.
