The first thing that Kai noticed when they stepped into the inner chamber of the Council was the light.
Scattered shapes of ruby, emerald and citrine that fell across the empty benches that rose on either side of them, encircling the open space at its centre.
Yet, the stone walls did not appear to have any windows.
Until he looked up.
Just like the atrium before it, the ceiling was open, covered by glass. Yet, rather than a singular, clear pane, the chamber ceiling consisted of an intricate stained-glass depiction of the entire city of Nasiru.
It was also just as high as the atrium. And yet, where the hall lined with statues of the Gods felt open and bright, the chamber, with its dark walls felt like a cold tomb of stone.
Ahead of them the encirclement of empty benches was broken by a wide dais, where three occupied chairs of plush velvet and rich mahogany were placed.
