The second day of harvest begins much like the first.
I wake early, prepare a quick breakfast for Donny and myself, and head out to the field. The high elves are already gathered, looking more rested than yesterday but still visibly tired from the previous day's work.
Vesper, surprisingly, is awake and alert.
[Vesper] "I told you I'd be ready!"
[Nym] "It's a miracle."
[Vesper] "I'm motivated!"
We head to the Silverwheat section and get to work immediately. The remaining wheat is substantial, but with everyone working together, the rhythm comes back quickly.
Cut, bundle, tie. Cut, bundle, tie.
The morning passes in steady labor, the golden stalks falling one by one. By early afternoon, the last bundle is tied and stacked with the others.
Liora wipes her brow and surveys the field.
[Liora] "That's everything. The harvest is complete."
A cheer goes up from the high elves. Even I feel a surge of satisfaction looking at the mountains of bundled wheat.
[Wright] "Alright, let's take a break. I don't know about you all, but I'm starving."
—
The cooking team has prepared another hearty meal: grilled meat, roasted vegetables, and plenty of Emberbread. Everyone sits in the grass, eating and chatting about the morning's work.
After lunch, Liora stands and addresses the group.
[Liora] "Alright everyone, we're splitting into teams for the afternoon. Nym, you'll lead the field clearing crew. Use magic to remove any remaining plant matter and prepare the soil for replanting."
Nym nods.
[Nym] "Understood."
[Liora] "Vesper, you're with me. We'll be sorting and storing the harvested crops. Rhevan, you and Kara will handle processing the Silverwheat into flour."
[Rhevan] "Got it."
[Kara] "We'll set up near the warehouse."
[Liora] "Wright, once the fields are cleared, we'll need you to check the soil and adjust it as needed."
[Wright] "Leave it to me."
The teams disperse, each heading to their assigned tasks.
—
I join Nym and her crew at the field.
The cleared sections from yesterday still have some plant debris: root systems, fallen leaves, bits of stem. Nym directs her team to focus on one section at a time, using magic to break down and remove the organic matter.
[Nym] "We want the field clean, but not sterile. Leave some of the smaller roots. They'll decompose and add nutrients back to the soil."
The high elves cast spells in coordinated waves. The debris lifts into the air, separates into usable compost and waste, then gets deposited in designated piles at the edge of the field.
I help where I can, using wind magic to gather loose material and move it to the compost piles. It's more efficient than the careful manual work from harvesting. A simple application of force, properly controlled, and the field clears quickly.
[Nym] "Your control is impressive. Most people would either miss half the debris or strip the topsoil trying to get it all."
[Wright] "Just a matter of feeling out the right pressure. Too much and you damage the field, too little and you're here all day."
She nods appreciatively.
[Nym] "Exactly. Magic might make things faster, but precision still matters."
We work through section after section, the field gradually transforming from post-harvest chaos into clean, prepared earth ready for the next planting cycle.
—
Meanwhile, Liora and Vesper are organizing the harvest near the warehouse.
I glance over occasionally and see them sorting crops and meats into the cooling crates Vesper designed. The Root Tubers and Carrotroot are packed into separate crates, their earthy forms stacked neatly. The fruits are being handled with extra care. The meats are stored into separate crates based on the type of monster.
Vesper slots mana stones into each crate, activating the cooling runes. The soft glow indicates they're working properly.
[Vesper] "These are perfect for the fruits. They'll stay fresh for weeks now."
[Liora] "Good. I'll place all the perishables into my Storage once they're cooled down."
Liora pulls out a ledger and begins taking inventory, counting each crate as it's filled and sealed. She makes notes about quantities and types.
Near the other end of the warehouse, Rhevan and Kara have set up a processing station for the Silverwheat.
The bundled wheat is being threshed, separating the grain from the chaff. Rhevan and his team beat the bundles against large wooden frames, the golden kernels falling through into collection bins below. The chaff is swept aside into separate piles for animal feed.
Once the grain is separated, Kara's team begins the milling process. They're using large stone mills, grinding the wheat kernels into flour. It's labor-intensive work, but the results are impressive. Fine, pale flour accumulates in cloth sacks, ready for baking.
[Kara] "This is going to make a lot of bread."
[Rhevan] "Enough to feed an army."
—
By late afternoon, Nym's crew has finished clearing the field.
I walk across the prepared earth, examining it with a critical eye. Then I activate Alchemy and kneel, placing my hand on the soil.
The analysis comes back immediately.
Nitrogen levels are low. Phosphorus is depleted. Potassium is borderline. The growth acceleration magic forced the crops to mature in hours instead of months, and the soil paid the price. The nutrients were consumed faster than the earth could naturally replenish them.
[Wright] "Yeah, this is rough."
Nym walks over.
[Nym] "How bad?"
[Wright] "Pretty bad. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium... all way below where they should be. Growth acceleration pulls nutrients out faster than the soil can keep up."
I pull several large containers from Storage. They're filled with blood and bone from the monsters Rhevan's team hunted over the past few days.
[Nym] "Monster remains?"
[Wright] "High in organic nitrogen and phosphorus. Makes excellent fertilizer."
I use Alchemy to break down the blood and bone into their component nutrients, then infuse them into the soil. The earth darkens slightly as it absorbs the enriched material.
I move through each section systematically, testing and adjusting. In some areas, I add more nitrogen. In others, I balance the phosphorus and potassium levels. It's meticulous work, but necessary.
[Wright] "This should stabilize things for now, but we can't keep doing daily harvests. The soil needs time to recover between cycles."
Liora approaches, having finished the inventory. She's carrying her ledger, flipping through the pages.
[Liora] "I've got the final count."
She reads off the numbers. I let out a low whistle.
[Liora] "Wright, this is enough to feed tens of thousands of people for several days. Maybe a week if we ration carefully."
[Wright] "That's actually incredible. Way more than I expected."
[Liora] "It is. But you're right about the soil. If we keep pushing this hard, we'll deplete it completely."
[Wright] "Yeah. At this rate, we'd kill the field in a few weeks."
Liora taps her ledger thoughtfully.
[Liora] "What if we only harvest twice a week? That gives the soil three to four days to recover between cycles. We can still use growth acceleration, just not as intensely."
[Wright] "That works. Less stress on the soil, and we can see how the situation unfolds and dial it back further as needed. Eventually settle on a casual, normal pace once things stabilize."
[Liora] "Then it's settled. We'll start the next planting cycle tomorrow morning, but we'll aim for a slower, steadier rhythm."
[Wright] "Perfect. Let's make it sustainable."
Liora smiles.
[Liora] "Good. Let's call it a day. Everyone's earned some rest."
—
The high elves begin packing up their tools and heading back toward the barracks. The sun is still relatively high in the sky. There's time before dinner.
Vesper appears at my side almost instantly.
[Vesper] "So. About your cabin."
[Wright] "Oh right, I did promise you a tour, didn't I?"
[Vesper] "You did! And we finished early, so now's the perfect time!"
Nym walks over, looking curious.
[Nym] "What's this about your cabin?"
[Vesper] "Wright's giving me a tour! He has all these artifacts. Solar panels, a refrigerator, all kinds of things I want to see!"
Kara and Rhevan overhear and join the conversation.
[Kara] "A tour? I'd like to see these artifacts too."
[Rhevan] "Same. I'm curious about this refrigerator."
Liora approaches, looking intrigued.
[Liora] "If you're showing people around, I'd like to come as well. I've been curious about your living situation."
Before I can respond, a few high elf children who'd been helping with lighter tasks run over, their eyes bright with excitement.
[Child 1] "Can we come too?"
[Child 2] "Please? Please?"
[Child 3] "We want to see!"
I look at the growing group and can't help but laugh.
[Wright] "Sure, why not? The more the merrier. Come on, let's go."
Vesper pumps her fist in the air.
[Vesper] "Yes!"
The group follows me as I lead the way through the forest toward my cabin. Vesper, Nym, Kara, Rhevan, Liora, and a handful of excited children trail behind.
Donny waddles alongside, churring happily at the procession.
One of the children runs up to him.
[Child 1] "Can I ride on your back?"
Donny churrs and lowers himself slightly. The child climbs on, giggling with delight.
[Child 2] "Me too! Me too!"
Two more children scramble onto Donny's back. He's surprisingly patient about it, waddling forward with three small high elves clinging to him like he's a parade float.
[Wright] "Donny, you're spoiling them."
He churrs proudly, clearly enjoying the attention.
Vesper is practically vibrating with excitement, firing off questions as we walk.
[Vesper] "What do the solar panels look like up close? How does the refrigerator stay cold? Do you have other artifacts? Can I study them?"
[Wright] "Patience, Vesper. You'll see everything in a minute. And no, you still can't take anything apart."
[Vesper] "But what if I promise to put it back together?"
[Wright] "The answer is still no."
She pouts but doesn't argue further.
Kara walks beside Liora, discussing potential applications for cooling runes in other storage solutions. Rhevan is asking about food preservation techniques. Nym is just smiling, clearly amused by the whole situation.
The remaining children are chattering excitedly among themselves, speculating about what they'll see. One of them riding Donny keeps leaning forward to ask him questions, as if expecting him to answer.
[Child 3] "Do you think there's magic inside the cabin?"
[Child 1] "Maybe it's all powered by a giant crystal!"
[Child 2] "Or a dragon!"
[Wright] "Not quite, but close enough."
As we approach the cabin, I can see it through the trees. Simple, sturdy, with the dark solar panels gleaming on the roof.
The children gasp.
[Child 1] "What are those black things?"
[Wright] "Those are the solar panels Vesper's been asking about. They turn sunlight into power."
[Vesper] "I need to see them up close!"
[Wright] "Alright, alright. Here we are. Welcome to my home."
