The school cafeteria buzzes with the usual lunchtime chaos—students chatting, trays clattering, the smell of curry and rice filling the air.
Takeshi sits with his track team, laughing at something his teammate said. Across the room, Yuki eats alone with a book propped open beside her tray. Kenji occupies a corner table, earbuds in, staring out the window. Aiko is surrounded by a group of underclassmen, her bright smile lighting up their conversation. Daichi hunches over his phone at another table, probably checking game updates.
Then, without warning, a massive glowing circle erupts across the cafeteria floor.
Intricate symbols blaze with golden light, spreading wider and wider. Students scream, scrambling away from the expanding pattern.
Five people stand frozen within its bounds—Takeshi, Yuki, Kenji, Aiko, Daichi.
The light surges.
And they vanish.
—
Takeshi stumbles as solid ground materializes beneath his feet.
His ears ring. His vision swims. The cafeteria is gone.
Instead, he's standing in a grand hall—stone pillars, high vaulted ceilings, torches flickering along the walls. The air smells different. Heavier. Like dust and old stone.
[Takeshi] "What the—"
[Aiko] "Takeshi?!"
He spins. Aiko is right beside him, eyes wide with panic. Yuki stands a few feet away, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Kenji is crouched low, body tense, scanning the room. Daichi is blinking rapidly, mouth hanging open.
They're all still in their school uniforms.
And they're surrounded.
Robed figures lie sprawled on the floor around them, gasping for breath. Knights in armor line the walls, hands on sword hilts. Nobles in elaborate clothing stand on a raised platform, watching with cold, calculating eyes.
At the center of the platform sits a man on a throne.
King Aldric.
He's a portly man in his fifties, with thinning gray hair combed over a balding crown. His face is flushed red, jowls sagging with excess weight. He wears a gaudy golden crown embedded with jewels and robes so ornate they look ridiculous rather than regal.
[Aldric] "Only five?! FIVE?!"
His voice booms across the hall.
One of the nobles leans close to whisper in his ear. The king's expression shifts from anger to confusion, then back to anger.
[Aldric] "I funded this ritual with half the royal treasury, and you incompetent fools only managed to summon FIVE heroes?!"
The mage on the floor tries to speak but can barely lift his head.
Behind the king, the nobles exchange glances. One smirks. Another adjusts his robes, clearly unconcerned. A third watches the exhausted mages with cold disdain.
[Noble] "Five blessed heroes is more than enough, Your Majesty. Quality over quantity."
[Aldric] "Ah. Yes. Of course."
He waves a hand dismissively at the exhausted mages.
[Aldric] "At least tell me they have the Goddess's blessing. Appraise them. Now."
One of the mages, trembling with effort, raises a shaking hand toward the students. Faint light glimmers around his fingers.
[Mage] "Y-yes... Your Majesty... all five... have received... blessings..."
The mage's hand drops. His eyes roll back. He collapses completely.
King Aldric's expression transforms. His anger vanishes, replaced by gleeful triumph. The nobles behind him smile—but their smiles are sharp, predatory.
[Aldric] "Excellent! EXCELLENT!"
He rises from his throne, arms spread wide, addressing the students with a broad, oily smile.
[Aldric] "Welcome, heroes from another world! I am King Aldric, ruler of the great Kingdom of Aldencrest!"
Takeshi's mind is racing. Another world? Heroes? What is happening?
Yuki's eyes are wide behind her glasses, her breath coming in short gasps. Aiko has grabbed onto Takeshi's arm, knuckles white. Kenji's face is expressionless, but his jaw is clenched tight. Daichi looks like he might throw up.
[Aldric] "You have been summoned here in our darkest hour! Our kingdom stands on the border of the Demon Lord's territories. The demons invade our lands, slaughter our people, burn our villages!"
He clutches his chest dramatically.
[Aldric] "We prayed to the Goddess for salvation, and she has answered! She has blessed you five with divine power and brought you to our world to be our champions!"
[Takeshi] "Wait, hold on—"
[Aldric] "You are heroes! Chosen by the Goddess herself to bring peace to this world and vanquish the Demon Lord!"
Takeshi tries to process this. Demon Lord. Heroes. Goddess. It sounds like something out of a manga.
Yuki's breathing has steadied slightly. Her eyes dart around the room, taking in every detail with sharp focus.
Aiko is trembling, still gripping Takeshi's arm.
Daichi finally finds his voice.
[Daichi] "Uh... where exactly are we?"
[Aldric] "You are in the Kingdom of Aldencrest! A world of magic and wonder!"
Magic.
The word hangs in the air.
Yuki's eyes light up—just for a moment, quickly hidden.
Kenji breaks his silence, his voice flat and cold.
[Kenji] "Send us back."
Everyone turns to look at him.
[Kenji] "We're just high school students. We don't know how to fight. This is dangerous."
He looks directly at the king.
[Kenji] "Send us back home. Now."
King Aldric's smile falters for just a second before returning.
[Aldric] "I'm afraid that's impossible. The ritual required an immense amount of magical power. To send you back would require defeating the Demon Lord and harnessing his power."
[Kenji] "That's convenient."
[Aldric] "But fear not! Once you have saved our world and vanquished the Demon Lord, I give you my royal word—you will be returned to your home as heroes!"
Silence.
Takeshi looks at the others. Aiko is still scared. Yuki looks conflicted. Daichi looks lost. Kenji looks angry.
[Takeshi] "So... we don't have a choice?"
[Aldric] "You have been blessed by the Goddess for this very purpose! Surely you understand the honor—"
[Takeshi] "That's not an answer."
King Aldric's smile tightens.
[Aldric] "You are free to choose, of course. But the path home lies through the Demon Lord's defeat. There is no other way."
It takes a long time for that to sink in.
No other way.
They're stuck here.
Eventually, Takeshi nods slowly.
[Takeshi] "...Alright. We'll do it."
Aiko looks up at him, surprised.
[Aiko] "Takeshi..."
[Takeshi] "What choice do we have?"
The king claps his hands together.
[Aldric] "Wonderful! You will be given rooms in the castle. Rest today. Tomorrow, you begin your training!"
Knights step forward, gesturing for the students to follow.
They're led out of the grand hall in a daze.
—
King Aldric watches them leave, beaming with satisfaction.
Once the doors close, one of the nobles steps forward—Duke Vareth, a thin man with sharp features and calculating eyes.
[Vareth] "That went well, Your Majesty."
[Aldric] "Yes! Five heroes blessed by the Goddess! Our problems are solved!"
[Vareth] "Indeed. Now, about the proclamation—"
[Aldric] "Oh yes! I should tell the people the good news!"
Another noble approaches—Countess Lirien, elegant and cold.
[Countess Lirien] "We've prepared the speech, Your Majesty. If you simply read from the script—"
[Aldric] "No need! I know exactly what to say!"
The nobles exchange glances. Duke Vareth's smile doesn't reach his eyes.
[Vareth] "Of course, Your Majesty. We'll arrange the platform immediately."
As the king waddles off to prepare, the nobles remain behind.
[Countess Lirien] "Five blessed heroes. That's more than we need."
[Vareth] "Indeed. Once they've served their purpose..."
[Noble] "We can extract their blessings?"
[Vareth] "The ritual is already prepared. We simply need them to grow strong enough first."
[Countess Lirien] "And if they refuse to fight?"
[Vareth] "Then we remind them that we control the only way home."
They smile at each other—cold, calculating smiles that would send chills down anyone's spine.
[Vareth] "Let them play hero for now. It serves our purposes."
—
An hour later, King Aldric stands on a balcony overlooking the capital square.
A crowd has gathered below—smaller than it should be. Where there were once thousands, now only hundreds remain. The streets look empty. Abandoned shops line the roads.
[Aldric] "People of Aldencrest! Hear me!"
His voice, magically amplified, echoes across the square.
[Aldric] "I come bearing joyous news! The Goddess has not abandoned us!"
Murmurs ripple through the crowd.
[Aldric] "The oracle you have heard—the lies spread by demons and the envious kingdoms that surround us—are nothing but fabrications meant to weaken our resolve!"
Some in the crowd look skeptical. Others lean forward, desperate to believe.
[Aldric] "The Goddess has sent us proof of her favor! Five heroes, blessed with divine power, have arrived to save our kingdom!"
He gestures grandly.
[Aldric] "They will drive back the demons! They will restore our glory! The Goddess stands with Aldencrest!"
A few scattered cheers rise from the crowd. Not many. But enough.
King Aldric smiles.
[Aldric] "Do not flee! Stay, and witness the salvation the Goddess has bestowed upon us!"
He retreats from the balcony, satisfied.
It doesn't matter if they believe him. As long as they stop leaving.
—
The students are led down a long corridor lined with portraits and tapestries.
A servant gestures to a row of doors.
[Servant] "These will be your quarters. Please rest for today. Tomorrow, training begins."
The servant bows and leaves.
The five students stand in the hallway, staring at the closed doors.
Takeshi reaches for the handle of the first room, then hesitates.
[Takeshi] "I... don't really want to be alone right now."
[Aiko] "Me neither."
[Yuki] "Same."
[Daichi] "Yeah, this is too weird."
Even Kenji nods.
They all gravitate toward Takeshi's door and file into his room.
It's large—far larger than any bedroom Takeshi has ever had. A four-poster bed dominates one side. Thick curtains cover a tall window. Ornate furniture fills the space.
They sit in a loose circle on the floor.
For a long moment, no one speaks.
Then Yuki breaks the silence.
[Yuki] "Do you think this is real?"
[Daichi] "It has to be a dream, right? This is too insane."
[Aiko] "It felt real when I grabbed your arm, Takeshi."
[Takeshi] "Yeah. It feels real."
[Kenji] "The king is lying."
Everyone looks at him.
[Kenji] "About sending us home. He's lying."
[Takeshi] "You don't know that—"
[Kenji] "I know. I could see it."
Daichi runs a hand through his hair.
[Daichi] "Okay, but if this is real... like, actually real... then we're in a fantasy world. With magic."
He pauses.
[Daichi] "If this were a game or a manga, we'd have status screens or something, right?"
He laughs weakly.
[Daichi] "Status. Open."
A translucent blue screen appears in front of him.
Daichi screams.
[Daichi] "WHAT THE—"
[Takeshi] "What?! What is it?!"
[Daichi] "There's a—there's a screen! A status screen! Right in front of me!"
[Yuki] "I don't see anything."
[Daichi] "It's right here!"
He waves his hand through the air. The others see nothing.
[Aiko] "Maybe... only you can see yours?"
Takeshi hesitates, then tries.
[Takeshi] "Status. Open."
A screen appears.
His eyes widen.
[Takeshi] "I see it. I see mine."
One by one, they all try.
[Yuki] "Status. Open."
[Aiko] "Status. Open."
[Kenji] "...Status. Open."
Five screens. Five shocked faces.
[Yuki] "Intelligence... 18? Is that good?"
[Daichi] "I have something called Strategic Mind... wait, is that my blessing?"
[Aiko] "Healing Light... I can heal people?"
[Takeshi] "Strength... 12. Agility... 14."
[Yuki] "Wait, there's more. Appraisal, Storage, Language Comprehension..."
[Aiko] "I have those too! Language Comprehension... all languages?"
[Takeshi] "That's how we understood the king. We've been speaking a different language this whole time?"
[Daichi] "Whoa. That's... actually really useful."
Kenji says nothing, but his eyes scan his screen intently.
Then Yuki gasps.
[Yuki] "There's a message. At the bottom."
They all look.
At the very bottom of each status screen, in small text, a message appears:
---
Warning: The Kingdom of Aldencrest is corrupt. Do not trust King Aldric. Someone will come to rescue you in a few days. Trust the man named Wright.
— Goddess Jyne
---
Silence.
Five students stare at the message, their hearts pounding.
The room feels suddenly colder.
