Chapter 12 - ## Chapter 11: The Safe

Kai sat in the office, the afternoon light slanting across the polished floor. Rebecca observed him quietly, letting him feel in control while she monitored every micro-expression.

"Today," she said softly, "we're going to revisit your earliest memories with your parents. I want precision. Focus. Every detail matters."

Kai closed his eyes and inhaled deeply. He traced the path in his mind—the living room, the scent of polish, his father's voice, the desk with the locked safe tucked away in the corner. Each detail clicked into place, as though he had been practicing unknowingly.

Rebecca circled him slowly, heels clicking on the floor. Every movement radiated control, confidence, beauty—long dark wavy hair falling loosely, olive skin catching the sunlight, onyx eyes glinting brown whenever they met his. Every step reminded him of the private nickname that curled in his mind. *Muffin.*

He smiled faintly at the absurd thought, suppressing it.

"Good," Rebecca murmured. "Now, reconstruct the combination as it would have been in your father's memory. Don't overthink it. Let it flow naturally."

Kai's mind raced, scanning fragments of numbers, sounds, tactile impressions. A faint pattern emerged, a sequence his father had drilled unconsciously into him as a child. Without realizing it, he spoke the combination softly.

Rebecca froze, eyes narrowing slightly. A subtle click sounded from the far corner of the room. The safe, which had been dormant for decades, had unlocked.

Kai opened his eyes, confused. "I… I didn't mean to—"

Rebecca stepped forward, a calm smile on her face. "You didn't. But you did exactly what was needed."

Her fingers hovered over the documents inside the safe. Carefully, she lifted the folder. The weight of history pressed down—letters, records, files, a psychological profile, and a journal belonging to her father.

Kai's brow furrowed. "What is all this?"

Rebecca didn't answer. She was already scanning the papers, absorbing the truth she had waited years to see. The document told everything: her father's life, his work, and the real reason he had been killed.

It wasn't just the document. It wasn't power or secrets.

It was love.

Both men—her father and Kai's father—had loved the same woman. Rebecca's mother. And in the end, her father had won her heart.

Rebecca's eyes flicked toward Kai. His expression remained calm, unaware of the implications yet. But somewhere deep inside, she realized something that sent a cold thrill down her spine.

Kai's father had not killed for the document. He had killed for obsession.

And now, the person in front of her—the son—was entirely unaware that he had just handed her the key to the ultimate truth.

Rebecca closed the folder carefully, her mind racing. She had the leverage. The truth. The revenge.

And Kai…

Kai Mayhem was still blissfully innocent of the fact that he had just given her the power to confront his father and everything that had happened decades ago.

She smiled faintly, darkly. The hunt was nearing its apex.

But little did she know—the boy, the key, and his father's shadow had one final twist in store.

The experiment was complete. The safe was open.

And the story was only beginning.
