The door slammed shut behind them.
Not slowly.
Not gently.
It closed like a verdict.
Kai flinched as the echo rolled through the space, fading into something far worse — silence. Heavy, suffocating silence.
The room they had entered was nothing like the previous chambers.
Long stone corridors stretched in every direction, branching and twisting like the roots of a dead tree. The walls were smooth, dark, and damp to the touch. Faint blue flames burned in wall sconces, casting warped shadows that crawled unnaturally across the ground.
"A maze…" Luca muttered. "Of course it's a maze."
Mei hugged herself, her breath shaky. "Why does it feel like… it's watching us?"
Kai felt it too.
The air pressed against his skin, thick and aware. Every step echoed just a little too long, as if the maze itself was listening.
Then the voice returned.
Cold. Calm. Inescapable.
"THIRD TRIAL INITIATED."
The flames flickered violently.
"ESCAPE THE MAZE BEFORE IT CLAIMS YOU."
A sharp click echoed beneath their feet.
Kai looked down just in time to see glowing symbols ignite across the floor.
"Move!" he shouted.
They ran.
The corridor behind them collapsed without warning, stone crashing down where they had been seconds before. Dust filled the air as they skidded around a corner, coughing, hearts hammering.
Freya stumbled. Kai grabbed her arm, steadying her before she fell.
"This place is alive," she whispered. "It's changing…"
She was right.
The maze shifted.
Walls slid silently, corridors closing while new ones opened. The blue flames dimmed and flared, rearranging the shadows into shapes that looked almost human.
Almost.
A whisper brushed Kai's ear.
Turn back.
He froze for half a second — just long enough for a spike to shoot from the wall beside his head.
He ducked instinctively. The spike missed him by inches, embedding itself in the stone with a sickening crack.
"Don't listen to it!" Kai yelled. "Whatever you hear — ignore it!"
Luca nodded, jaw clenched. "Yeah… it just told me my legs would snap if I kept running."
"That's comforting," Freya said breathlessly.
They sprinted down another corridor.
The floor suddenly dropped.
Kai barely had time to react before the stone beneath them tilted sharply, turning into a steep slope. They slid uncontrollably, slamming into each other as the passage funneled them downward.
At the bottom, they crashed into a heap.
Groans filled the air.
Kai pushed himself up first, ignoring the pain in his shoulder. "Everyone okay?"
A chorus of shaky yeses answered him.
But something was wrong.
The corridor behind them… was gone.
In its place stood a wall of shifting darkness, pulsing slowly like a living thing.
From within it, shapes began to form.
Figures.
Thin. Twisted. Crawling out of the shadows on all fours.
"Not again…" Mei whispered.
Shadow creatures emerged fully, their bodies stitched together from darkness and faintly glowing eyes. They moved jerkily, heads snapping toward the group all at once.
The maze had found its hunters.
"Run!" Kai shouted.
They bolted down the only open path.
The creatures followed.
Fast.
Too fast.
Kai's mind raced. They're herding us. Pushing us where they want.
He spotted something ahead — symbols etched into the walls, similar to the runes from before, but these were faded… broken.
"Stop!" he yelled suddenly.
Everyone skidded to a halt, barely avoiding stepping onto a glowing section of the floor.
Spikes erupted where Luca's foot would've landed.
"How did you—" Luca started.
"I'm watching the patterns," Kai said quickly. "The traps trigger where the symbols are intact. The broken ones are safe."
He didn't know how he knew that.
He just… did.
They moved carefully now, stepping only where the runes were cracked or incomplete.
The shadow creatures slammed into an invisible barrier at the edge of the corridor, shrieking in frustration. They couldn't cross.
For now.
The maze hated being outsmarted.
The walls began to shake.
Cracks spread. Stones fell.
A new corridor opened to their right, lit by a sickly red glow.
A choice.
"Left or right?" Freya asked, panic creeping into her voice.
Kai closed his eyes for a heartbeat.
He listened.
Not to the whispers.
To the rhythm of the maze.
"The red path is a trap," he said. "It's too obvious. We go left."
They ran.
Moments later, a deafening scream echoed from the red corridor as the floor collapsed entirely.
Mei swallowed hard. "You… you saved us."
Kai didn't answer. His heart was pounding for a different reason now.
This place was testing more than fear.
It was testing instinct.
Suddenly, the maze opened into a circular chamber.
At the center stood a stone pedestal.
On it lay a single object: a rusted key.
Above it, words burned into the air:
"ONE MAY TAKE IT."
The shadow creatures began pouring in from every corridor.
Dozens of them.
"Of course," Luca groaned. "There's always a catch."
Kai scanned the room. No traps on the floor. No obvious spikes.
But the pedestal…
"Only one person can take it," Mei said softly. "What happens to the rest?"
The shadows crept closer.
Kai stepped forward.
"No," Freya said sharply, grabbing his arm. "It could kill you."
"If none of us take it, we all die," Kai replied. His voice was steady, even if his hands weren't. "I'll do it."
Before anyone could stop him, he ran.
The moment his fingers closed around the key, pain exploded through his body.
He screamed as black symbols crawled up his arm like living ink, burning into his skin.
The shadows froze.
The maze went silent.
Kai collapsed to his knees, gasping, clutching the key as the symbols faded — leaving behind faint scars.
The voice returned, softer now.
"KEY BEARER SELECTED."
"ESCAPE GRANTED… AT A COST."
A door opened behind them.
The shadows recoiled, melting back into the walls.
Luca and the others rushed to Kai's side, pulling him up.
"You idiot," Luca said, voice shaking. "Don't ever do that again."
Kai forced a weak smile. "No promises."
They staggered through the door together.
As it closed behind them, Kai glanced down at his arm.
The scars pulsed faintly… then disappeared.
But he could still feel them.
Watching.
Waiting.
The Death Game wasn't just testing survival anymore.
It had chosen him.
And whatever came next…
would demand far more than fear.
