The room was quiet after the hug—too quiet, like the world itself had paused to watch them breathe.
Aarav felt Anaya's arms loosen slowly, reluctantly, as if letting go hurt more than holding on. When she stepped back, her eyes weren't avoiding his anymore. They were searching him, reading him, trying to decide whether the man standing in front of her was someone she could trust with the rest of her heart.
"You didn't answer me," she said softly.
Aarav swallowed. His chest felt heavy, not because he didn't know what to say—but because he knew exactly what the truth was.
"I'm scared," he admitted. "Not of you. Not of us. I'm scared of losing this… once I finally have it."
Anaya's lips curved into a small, sad smile. "That makes two of us."
They sat on the edge of the bed, close enough that their shoulders brushed. Aarav could feel her warmth, steady and real. This wasn't a dream. This wasn't one of those late-night thoughts where he imagined a life that never came true. She was here. Right now.
"I didn't plan to fall for you," Anaya said after a pause. "I came here thinking I'd stay for a while, fix a few things, then leave. That was the plan."
"And now?" Aarav asked.
"Now I don't know if leaving is even possible."
Those words hit him harder than any confession could have.
Aarav turned to her. "If you stay… it won't be easy. My life isn't simple. I don't have big promises or perfect days."
Anaya looked at him, really looked at him. "I'm not asking for perfect. I'm asking for real."
Silence wrapped around them again, but this time it felt different. Softer. Safer.
That night, Aarav couldn't sleep.
He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, replaying every word, every look, every second of that hug. For years, he had convinced himself that love was something temporary—something people borrowed until life demanded it back.
But Anaya wasn't borrowing him.
She was offering to stay.
And that terrified him.
The next morning arrived too soon.
Sunlight filtered through the curtains, and for a brief second, Aarav forgot everything. Then he remembered. The conversation. The closeness. The unspoken decision waiting between them.
He found Anaya in the kitchen, making tea. She looked calm, but he could sense the tension beneath it. Like him, she was pretending everything was normal.
"Morning," he said.
"Morning," she replied, handing him a cup.
Their fingers brushed. Neither of them pulled away immediately.
"So…" Anaya began, then stopped.
"So," Aarav echoed.
She laughed lightly. "We're really bad at starting serious conversations."
"Only when they matter."
Anaya leaned against the counter. "Aarav, I need to be honest with you."
His heart skipped. "Okay."
"If I stay here… it's not just about us. It changes things. My career. My family. Everything."
"I know," he said quietly. "And I won't ask you to give any of that up."
She looked surprised. "You wouldn't?"
"No. Because if you stay, it should be because you want to—not because I held you back."
That was the moment something shifted in her eyes.
"Most people would beg," she said.
"I don't want you to resent me later."
Anaya stepped closer. "And what about you? What do you want?"
Aarav took a deep breath. "I want you here. I want mornings like this. I want arguments, laughter, silence… all of it. But only if it doesn't cost you who you are."
For a long moment, Anaya didn't speak. Then she nodded slowly.
"That's the first time anyone has loved me without trying to own me."
Later that day, they went out together.
Not as a declaration. Not as a label. Just two people walking side by side, testing what it felt like to exist together in the world.
They talked about small things—movies, food, random memories—but beneath every word was the same question:
Is this the beginning… or the goodbye?
At a café, Anaya watched Aarav talk to the waiter, smiling awkwardly, apologizing for no reason. She realized something then.
He didn't pretend to be confident. He didn't act larger than life.
He was simply… honest.
"You're thinking too much," Aarav said suddenly.
"Am I that obvious?"
"Yes," he smiled. "Your eyebrow does this thing."
She laughed. "Great. Now I'll never stop noticing it."
That laughter stayed with him. It felt like hope.
That evening, Anaya received a call.
She stepped aside to answer it, her expression changing with every second. Aarav didn't need to hear the words to know what it was about.
When she came back, her face was pale.
"They want me back," she said. "Sooner than expected."
Aarav's chest tightened. "When?"
"Two weeks."
Two weeks.
Fourteen days to decide the rest of their lives.
"That's… fast," he managed.
"I know."
They stood there, the weight of time suddenly crushing.
"I don't need an answer right now," Anaya said quickly. "I just wanted you to know."
Aarav nodded, even though his mind was racing.
Two weeks wasn't long enough to fall in love.
And yet… somehow, they already had.
That night, the distance between them felt heavier than ever.
They sat on opposite sides of the room, pretending to scroll on their phones, pretending everything was fine.
Finally, Aarav spoke. "Are you afraid?"
"Yes," Anaya answered honestly.
"Of leaving… or of staying?"
She looked up at him. "Both."
He stood and walked toward her, stopping just a step away. "Whatever you choose… don't choose out of fear."
She reached for his hand, holding it tightly. "Promise me something."
"Anything."
"Don't disappear. No matter what happens."
Aarav squeezed her hand. "I won't."
But deep down, he wondered if promises could survive decisions like this.
As the days passed, something beautiful and painful grew between them.
They cooked together. They argued over silly things. They shared stories they had never told anyone else.
And with every moment, the truth became clearer:
Love wasn't the problem.
Time was.
One evening, as they stood on the balcony watching the city lights, Anaya leaned her head on his shoulder.
"If I stay," she whispered, "will you fight for us?"
Aarav didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, "I already am."
She closed her eyes, breathing him in, knowing that whatever came next would change them forever.
