Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Echoes of the Choice

The next morning arrived softly, almost apologetically.

Sunlight slipped through the half-open curtains like it was trying not to disturb anything. The city outside was already awake—honking, distant voices, the low hum of life moving forward—but inside the apartment, time still felt paused.

Anaya woke first.

Aarav was still asleep beside her, one arm thrown across the pillow she had used, breathing slow and even. His face looked younger in sleep, the tension of the last two weeks smoothed away for a few hours.

She watched him for a long minute.

This was real now.

She had said yes to this version of life.

And yet her chest felt tight—not with regret, but with the strange weight of permanence.

She slipped out of bed quietly, barefoot on the cool floor, and padded to the kitchen. The routine felt comforting: boiling water, measuring coffee grounds, the soft clink of the spoon. Small things that grounded her.

When Aarav appeared in the doorway ten minutes later, hair messy, eyes still heavy with sleep, he smiled the moment he saw her.

"Morning," he said, voice rough from sleep.

"Morning," she replied, pouring a second cup without asking.

He took it, fingers brushing hers longer than necessary.

They sat at the small table by the window.

For a while, neither spoke.

Just coffee. Just morning light. Just them.

Then Aarav broke the quiet.

"How do you feel?"

Anaya looked out at the city. "Like I jumped off a cliff… and I'm still falling."

He reached across the table, covered her hand with his.

"But you're not alone in the fall."

She turned her palm up, laced their fingers.

"No. I'm not."

They stayed like that until the coffee cooled.

Later, while Aarav was in the shower, Anaya's phone buzzed on the counter.

She glanced at the screen.

Unknown number.

But the message preview made her stomach drop.

We need to talk. You can't just disappear like this. – Rhea

Rhea. Her closest friend from the other side. The one who had helped her navigate the strange pull that brought her here in the first place. The one who knew exactly what "going back" meant.

Anaya stared at the message.

Part of her wanted to ignore it.

Another part—the part still tied to her old life—knew ignoring wouldn't make it go away.

She typed back quickly.

Not now. Give me time.

The reply came almost instantly.

Time is what you just ran out of. They're not happy. Call me when you're ready to face it.

Anaya locked the phone and set it face-down.

When Aarav came out, towel around his neck, hair damp, he noticed her expression immediately.

"Everything okay?"

She hesitated.

Then decided truth was the only thing that would work now.

"A message. From someone… from before."

He nodded slowly, like he had expected this.

"Friend?"

"Something like that."

He walked over, stood behind her, hands gentle on her shoulders.

"You don't have to tell me everything right now. But when you're ready… I'm here."

She leaned back against him.

"I know."

But inside, the echo started.

The choice she made yesterday had sounded final in the moment.

Now it felt like the beginning of a longer conversation—one she wasn't sure she was prepared for.

That afternoon they went for a walk.

Nothing planned. Just fresh air. Holding hands. Watching people live ordinary lives around them.

Anaya noticed things she hadn't before.

The way Aarav slowed his pace to match hers without thinking.

The way he pointed out a street dog and smiled when it wagged its tail at them.

The way his thumb kept tracing small circles on the back of her hand—like a quiet promise.

At a small park, they sat on a bench.

Children were playing nearby. Laughter. Running. Carefree.

Anaya watched them and felt something ache.

"I used to think I didn't want this," she said softly. "Kids. Family. The whole thing. It felt… too ordinary."

Aarav looked at her.

"And now?"

"Now I don't know what I want. But I know I want the chance to find out. With you."

He turned toward her fully.

"Then we'll find out together."

She searched his face.

"You're not scared I'll change my mind?"

"I'm terrified," he admitted. "Every single day I'll probably be terrified. But I'd rather be terrified with you than safe without you."

Anaya's eyes stung.

She leaned in and kissed him—slow, soft, like sealing something unspoken.

When they pulled apart, she whispered against his lips:

"Thank you for waiting."

"I'd wait forever if I had to," he said.

But forever wasn't promised anymore.

Not after yesterday.

That evening, back home, Anaya's phone buzzed again.

This time, a voicemail.

She played it on speaker so Aarav could hear too.

Rhea's voice—calm, but edged with worry.

"Anaya… I don't know how much they told you about the rules. But staying isn't as simple as saying yes. There's a cost. Always is. Call me. Before it's too late."

The message ended.

Silence filled the room.

Aarav looked at her.

"Rules?" he asked quietly.

Anaya swallowed.

"I… don't know everything. Not yet."

He nodded once.

Then pulled her close.

"Whatever it is… we face it. Together."

She buried her face in his shirt.

But the echo was louder now.

Choices have echoes.

And some echoes come with shadows.
