Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: When Silence Felt Too Loud

Aarav didn't expect to see her that evening.

The bookstore near his office was usually quiet after seven, a place he visited when he needed space to think. He was flipping through a novel absentmindedly when a familiar laugh reached his ears.

He looked up.

Anaya was standing near the art section, her head tilted slightly as she listened to someone speak. A man stood close to her—too close. He was tall, confident, dressed well. The kind of person who seemed comfortable taking up space.

Aarav's chest tightened before he could stop it.

He told himself it meant nothing.

People had friends. Colleagues. Histories.

Still, his feet carried him closer before his mind could argue.

"Anaya," he said.

She turned, surprise flickering across her face before softening into a smile. "Aarav. I didn't know you came here."

"Sometimes," he replied. His eyes briefly met the man's.

"Oh," she said, noticing the tension she hadn't intended to create. "This is Rohan. We used to work together."

Rohan extended a hand. "Nice to finally meet you. Anaya's mentioned you."

That surprised Aarav. "She has?"

Rohan smiled knowingly. "Only good things."

Anaya shot him a warning look. "Don't exaggerate."

They laughed, but Aarav felt like an outsider to a joke he hadn't been part of.

"So," Rohan said, turning to Anaya, "are you still coming this weekend? Everyone's asking."

Anaya hesitated.

Aarav noticed.

"I'm not sure yet," she said carefully.

Rohan raised an eyebrow. "Still deciding?"

She nodded. "Yeah."

Something about the exchange unsettled Aarav. Not jealousy exactly—but awareness. A reminder that Anaya had a life before him. A life that didn't pause just because he had entered it.

Rohan checked his phone. "I should go. Think about it, okay?"

He glanced at Aarav once more before leaving, his expression unreadable.

Silence followed.

"That was… awkward," Anaya said finally.

Aarav smiled faintly. "A little."

They walked outside together, the evening air cool and heavy with unspoken thoughts.

"Rohan's a good friend," she explained. "He helped me a lot back then."

Aarav nodded. "I'm glad you had someone."

She stopped walking. "You sound distant."

He sighed. "I didn't mean to."

Anaya studied him, eyes sharp but gentle. "Did something bother you?"

He considered lying. Saying no. Pretending indifference.

But something told him honesty mattered more here.

"I think," he said slowly, "I realized I don't know everything about you. And that's fine. It just… caught me off guard."

She smiled slightly. "You don't have to know everything."

"I know," he said. "I just don't want to assume my place in your life."

That surprised her.

"You're not assuming," she said softly. "You're being careful."

They resumed walking.

After a moment, Anaya spoke again. "Rohan represents a part of my past. Not something I want back—just something that shaped me."

Aarav looked at her. "Does the past ever really stay in the past?"

She thought about it. "Only if we stop letting it decide our future."

They reached the corner where they usually parted ways.

"I didn't plan to run into you today," she said. "But I'm glad I did."

"So am I," he replied.

She hesitated, then added, "About this weekend… I might skip it."

"You don't have to," Aarav said quickly.

"I know," she said. "I just… prefer quiet lately."

He smiled. "Me too."

She took a step closer, then stopped, as if unsure. "Aarav?"

"Yes?"

"Thank you. For not making things complicated."

He chuckled softly. "Trust me, I'm not brave enough for that."

She laughed, and the tension dissolved, leaving something warmer in its place.

As she walked away, Aarav realized something important.

Jealousy wasn't about possession.

It was about fear—of being replaceable, forgettable.

And in that moment, standing under the streetlight, he understood that what he felt for Anaya wasn't rushed desire or fantasy.

It was quiet.

Growing.

Real.

And for the first time, he wasn't afraid of that.
