Chapter 10 - chapter 10: the root of the storm

The battle in the mist ended in a blur of steam and static. With the last of the borrowed Thunder, Kaito sent a final shockwave through the wet ground, disorienting the Tide-Hunters long enough to vanish into the deep thicket. He ran until his lungs burned like hot coals, finally collapsing beneath the gnarled roots of an ancient, white-barked tree as the first gray light of dawn touched the canopy.

A Taste of Peace

Kaito woke to the sound of a distant bell. His body felt like it had been trampled by a mountain ox, but the numbness in his arm had faded to a dull ache. Following the sound, he emerged from the forest and found a small, bustling trade town nestled in a valley.

For the first time in days, the smell of woodsmoke didn't mean war—it meant breakfast.

In a small stall, Kaito sat hunched over a bowl of steaming broth, his right hand hidden beneath a tattered sleeve. He was so focused on the food that he didn't notice the girl sitting at the neighboring table. She wore a simple, earth-toned traveler's tunic and a wide-brimmed hat, looking like any other merchant's daughter.

"You eat like someone who hasn't seen food in a century," she said, her voice bright and curious.

Kaito stiffened. "Just a long journey."

"I'm Elara," she said, tilting her hat back to reveal sharp, emerald-green eyes. "And you look like trouble. The 'Flame-branded' kind."

The Shadow Returns

Before Kaito could respond, the air grew heavy and damp. From the town entrance, three Tide-Hunters appeared, their blue armor glinting. They weren't hiding anymore.

"The Fugitive! There!"

Kaito bolted. He didn't think; he just ran back toward the treeline. To his surprise, he heard a second pair of feet behind him. It was Elara, her simple dress fluttering as she kept pace with him with effortless grace.

"Why are you following me?!" Kaito yelled as they dove into the dense woods.

"I hate bullies!" she shouted back. "And they're trampling the ferns!"

The Breaking Point

Deep in the forest, the Hunters cornered them in a clearing. Kaito reached for the Ring, his mind screaming for Kage. Kage! I need the Thunder!

"No," Kage's voice was a low, dangerous growl. "Your nerves are frayed, boy. If I force the lightning through you now, your heart will stop. You are on your own."

Kaito stood defenceless as the lead Hunter raised a blade of hardened ice. "Die, Fire-trash."

Suddenly, the ground erupted.

Massive, thorned vines surged from the earth, wrapping around the Hunter's limbs and slamming them into the trunks of trees. Elara stood in the center of the chaos, her "normal" clothes glowing with a faint, verdant light. She didn't use fire or water; she commanded the very life of the forest.

With a sharp gesture, she sent a wave of pollen into the air that knocked the Hunters unconscious in seconds.

The Truth Under the Tree

Kaito's vision blurred. The exhaustion finally won, and he slid down the trunk of a tree, falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When he woke, the moon was high. Elara was sitting by a small, smokeless fire, whittling a piece of wood.

"You're awake," she said softly. "You have a lot of strange energy in you, Kaito. The trees say you're carrying a ghost."

"It's... a long story," Kaito rasped, clutching his hand. He didn't mention the Ring. He didn't mention Kage. "Thank you for saving me."

"My home isn't far," she said, standing up. "My father is the Head of the Leaf Clan. He can heal those burns on your spirit. Come with me."

Season Finale: The Game Begins

The next morning, they reached the summit of a great ridge. Below them lay a city built into the canopy of giant trees—the heart of the Leaf Clan.

Kaito stood at the edge of the mountain, looking down at the world he was once taught to hate. He was a Fire-weaver in the land of Wood, carrying the soul of a God who wanted to burn it all down.

"Well done, boy," Kage whispered, his voice resonating with a new, chilling excitement. "We have infiltrated the second cage. The board is set. The pieces are moving."

Kage's violet light flickered deep in Kaito's eyes as he looked toward the horizon.

"The game is started now."
