Chapter 6 - Chapter -5 : System Arrives

The fluorescent lights of North Gangbuk High illuminates the classroom. I sat at my desk, my spine a perfect vertical line, my eyes scanning the pages of my advanced mathematics textbook. The world was a series of variables. If I solved for x, I achieved the result. It was simple .

Around me, the classroom was a chaotic mess of "noise." My classmates, the biological units I was forced to coexist with, were discussing webtoons.

"Man, the 'weak-to-strong' trope is so overplayed now," a boy laughed, leaning back until his chair groaned under the strain. "Everyone wants to be the underdog who suddenly gets a cheat code. But let's be real—in this school, if you're weak, you stay weak. There's no magic system coming to save a loser."

Another boy, turned his head toward me. He didn't speak to me often. No one did. To them, I was a "Robot" I didn't laugh at their jokes, I didn't participate in their petty dramas, and I didn't show fear when the seniors walked by. I was a bookworm who happened to be naturally gifted at physical education—a combination that made me "weird" to them rather than respected.

"Hey, Choyun," one boy said, his voice carrying a hint of mockery. "You're the Class President. You're always in those books. You don't actually believe in that stuff, do you? The idea that some bullied kid can just wake up and conquer the city?"

I didn't lift my gaze from the page. "The probability of a sudden, non-linear increase in physical capability without external intervention is statistically insignificant," I replied. My voice was flat, devoid of the rising and falling inflections that humans used to signal emotion. "Fictional narratives rely on such anomalies to drive engagement. Reality does not."

Lee snorted, turning back to his friends. "See? I told you. He's not even a person. He's just a textbook with legs."

As they walked away, my vision suddenly spasmed. It wasn't a biological failure—my pulse was steady . It was as if the air itself had fractured. A purple screen, semi-transparent and pulsing with a royal, rhythmic glow, manifested exactly twelve inches in front of my retinas.

I froze. For the first time in years, a variable had entered my life that I could not solve for. I sat in total silence, the screen hovering over my desk, perfectly stable despite the movement of my head. My classmates continued their chatter, oblivious. They couldn't see it. This was an individualized interface.

I didn't click it. Not yet. I waited until the final bell rang, until the corridors emptied, and until I reached the familiar, quiet sanctuary of my home.

"Choyun-ah? You're home later than usual," my mother called out from the kitchen. The smell of doenjang jjigae filled the home.

I stepped into the kitchen. My mother looked at me with that persistent, weary concern that I had long ago labeled as "inefficient emotional output." She reached out to touch my arm, but I stepped back instinctively, maintaining the distance required for my routine.

"Choyun, you're always studying. Why don't you go out? Spend time like a normal kid. I'll support you if you want to play sports, or join a club... you don't have to be a genius every single day just for my sake."

"I am a student," I replied. "The primary function of a student is the acquisition of knowledge to secure future stability. Any other expenditure of time is a luxury we cannot afford."

I saw her eyes dim. I knew, intellectually, that this was "sadness," but I had no internal resonance for it. I turned and walked into my room, shutting the door. The purple screen was still there, waiting in the dark.

I sat on the edge of my bed. If this "System" followed the logic of the stories the other boys discussed, then it was a tool for optimization. And I was a being built for optimization. I reached out a finger and pressed [YES].

The screen dissolved into purple sparks before reformulating.

[ Tutorial Quest: Say 'I'm sorry' to your mother. ]

[ Reward: Gold Card - Growth (3cm) ]

I stared at the text. It was a simple social transaction. Low energy requirement. Minimal risk. I stood up, walked back into the living room where my mother was setting the table, and looked her in the eyes.

"I'm sorry," I said.

She froze, a bowl of rice in her hands. "For what, Choyun? Did something happen at school?"

"I am just sorry," I repeated, then turned and walked back into my room. I didn't wait for her response. The social contract was fulfilled.

[ Quest Completed. ]

[ Reward Granted: Gold Card - 'Growth' ]

[ Would you like to use the card now? ]

I clicked [YES].

Suddenly, my body felt like it was being fed into a furnace. I collapsed onto my rug, my teeth gritted so hard I feared they would shatter. I could feel my long bones—the femurs and tibias—creaking under the pressure of a sudden, forced mitosis. My muscles were being torn and re-knitted in seconds. My spine felt like a series of small explosions were detaching the vertebrae to create space.

When the heat finally receded, I was drenched in sweat. I stood up and looked at the mirror. My trousers were now high-water pants, ending inches above my ankles. I walked to the doorframe where I had marked my height a week ago.

I was three centimeters taller.

I looked at my hands, flexing the fingers. The world had just changed. Choyun had received its first upgrade, and for the first time, I felt something that wasn't logic. I felt a cold, sharp anticipation. The System was real. And I was its chosen operator.
