Chapter 15 - Ambush

For the next three days, Si-eun had buried himself in books, the academy didn't house failures so if he wanted to get in, he had to study like a mad scholar who was about to propose a ground breaking thesis.

Luckily this body of his absorbed knowledge like a sponge, he really didn't need to stress it, reading once was enough for him to comprehend the contents so he covered his studies to a tolerable degree at least.

He'd also been training too, he forged his body through torturous practice, exercised till he could feel his joints creaking, and even trained with the rapier as the previous Azazel had done, since it felt like a second nature to him.

He wanted to learn to wield other weapon but he had to stick with his fists and the rapier for now, three days with a choked schedule wasn't nearly enough time to perfect anything.

Within the past few days he'd also learnt more about his class, the jester class and his builds as well.

His class as he suspected was highly versatile, he could randomly use a class depending on the situation he found himself in, so it was a bit of a gamble as well so he decided to invest the trickster points he'd gotten from escaping his death and gaslighting the king into giving him free access to the protagonist.

He'd invested every single one into his luck stat.

The others could be raised through normal means but not luck and charm.

Fortunately he was already charming enough but luck? Yeah his luck was shit! It wasn't just shit, it was on an absurd scale, much so that even the universe was having a fun time destroying him.

To cut the story short, his luck stat had gone from a pathetic twenty to seventy five.

With this he could utilize his jester class to a useful degree.

He also found out that the activated blessing was not constant, it was only a feature which activated when he was in danger and was unable to activate it himself, that being said he had to activate his blessings using a deck of enchanted cards.

Just thinking about it made him groan, imagine being in the middle of a fight and the next second you're shuffling cards and praying your luck comes in handy.

His restrictions however were dire.

A body prone to sickness after overextending the use of his abilities, heightened sensitivity, impulsiveness and the worst of all, a body with mana deficiency.

He couldn't absorb mana from the atmosphere like others could, he could only absorb mana from living organisms he killed with his hands.

On the bright side it increased his mana capacity permanently.

The downside though was that he was forced to become a monster who had to kill to survive.

Still It didn't matter much to him, killing didn't directly mean humans, there were other things he could kill so long as they were alive.

Luckily this world was filled with prey practically begging to be killed.

He'd also managed to talk his parents into allowing Lily accompany him to the academy as his personal maid.

And well his relationship with his siblings Alvina and Nathan were… questionable, but not as bad as earlier.

"Young Master? Are you ok?" Lily asked with a hint of worry, a façade Si-eun knew all too well.

She wasn't worried, curious maybe as to why he was deep in thought but definitely not worried.

"I'm fine, it's nothing for you to worry about." He muttered.

From the side, he noticed his sister Leona staring outside the carriage.

They were both on their way to the academy but she hadn't said a thing since they left the mansion.

He couldn't help but wonder what the old Azazel had done to her to garner such hatred.

While he was lost in thoughts, something grabbed his attention.

'Murderous intent?'

It was subtle, but undeniably present.

Leona sensed it as well yet she was anything but disturbed, she continued staring out of the window with an aloof expression, like the impending threat was to an insignificant degree that didn't require her intervention.

"Go deal with it." she commanded without facing him.

Si-eun raised a brow, sighed then asked.

"Are you nuts?"

"Do you want me to force you out there because believe me I've been itching to do so since the moment you got on the carriage." She retorted.

"But… but I haven't even said a word since I got on." He argued but she wasn't having any of it.

"Tell that to the assassins, now out."

He wanted to argue further but decided against it, on the bright side it was a good chance from him to test his abilities, and he did.

A wave of killing intent erupted from him.

It was a message to the assassins, one that seemed to say, quit hiding you've been found.

The message was clear, the assassins abandoned secrecy for a blown attack.

Lily was trembling within her seat like a frightened cur, her fear was palpable to the point where Si-eun couldn't tell if she was pretending or actually terrified.

"Oh I'll tell the assassins something alright." He muttered under his breath then brought out a gold coin which he tossed above the carriage.

His lips curled into a smile, eyes glowing with an unholy green hue as a deck of cards materialized within his hand.

"I hope you don't need anyone alive." Such were his last words before disappearing.

In place of where he sat, a gold coin lay.

Leona stared at the coin a bit longer than intended, her eyes cold yet curious.

Lily was still trembling within her seat, Leona eyes darted past her with disinterest.

Her thoughts drifted to her own maid, Karina who she'd left within her dorms.

She clearly wasn't buying the whole pretentious façade Lily was putting on.

After all, the maids and servants were all highly trained individuals, especially ones exclusive to the Astavore heirs.

They were either assassins or battle hardened veterans so the frightened maid act Lily was putting on didn't fool her one bit.

More importantly she noticed how exaggerated Lily's actions were, like gripping her skirt a bit too tightly.

A subtle action, but one she caught nevertheless.

She didn't dwell on the thought for long because outside, a different hell was unfolding.
