Chapter 4 - The trickster's gift

After wailing like a baby for what felt like an hour, okay perhaps that exaggeration was too much but still it felt like half an hour at least, Si-eun found himself in the hallway of duke astavore's mansion.

Yes, apparently the parents of this body were nobles of the highest order.

They were a ducal family with vast amounts of power, influence and wealth.

Wealth.

Just the term alone was enough to make Si-eun salivate with avarice.

I mean from a broken, penniless orphan in debt to the body of a Duke's son, sounded like something straight out of a fairytale didn't it.

But that aside, Si-eun was still bothered.

His mind raced, working faster than what his body would've allowed, recalling any hidden mechanism to help escape the daunting fate that awaited him.

And then, he recalled an item.

Moonsbane flower.

An item known for its strong hallucinative properties. It was one of the key ingredients dark mages used to create mind controlling drugs which robbed people of their will for a certain amount of time.

There was a downside to taking an unprocessed moonsbane flower though, it would immediately numb its consumers senses then make them deathly pale before affecting the user's mind.

One of the effects if taken in a large dose was dementia.

Si-eun knew attempting to use such an item was downright dangerous and even stupid but he didn't have a choice.

His goal was to survive but then again Si-eun wasn't one to leave grudges unsettled so he decided, he was going to screw the fourth prince over for attempting to use Azazel as a pawn.

Fortunately he could get the item as soon as possible since the head maid Anne was taking some servants to restock the dukedom's food reservoir at noon today.

He could easily use one of the servants to get the flower before he was summoned to the royal palace.

But then he needed another item or rather two items.

While searching through the game forums as a newbie, someone had posted something about a potent poison which could destroy the effects of the moonsbane flower after dranvee the head of the dark mages tower used a mind control drug to control one of the heroines.

It was a hellish arc because no one could get past it, since the hero wasn't programmed to harm the heroines after taking the sacred oath, players began to resort to cheap tricks, making deals with demons to clear through the arc, but it always resulted in the loss of the heroine and it was one of the most recurring bad endings.

It wasn't until after an anonymous player dropped a hint about a poison that could devour the effects of the moonsbane flower, that people started clearing the arc properly.

That poison was the scaleborne venom.

A highly potent poison that would instantly petrify the heart of anyone unfortunate enough to consume it.

The poison however when paired with the blood of an elven crow would lose it petrifying effects.

It was a gamble but one worth taking considering there was a literal time limit for his head to stay attached to his body.

Si-eun sighed.

'So much for gaining a second life huh, I can't even seem to catch a break.'

He had actually begun to wonder if the world hated his guts or if some deranged God was seeking entertainment from his suffering.

Little did he know though, he wasn't far off from the truth but hey, that was a story for another time.

There were more pressing matters that required his attention.

After a while of aimlessly walking through the Grand halls, he finally stopped.

In front of him was a medium sized door with two knobs.

Without much of a thought, he twisted it and stepped inside.

As soon as he did, he was stunned speechless.

The room was spacious, with high ceilings supported by dark polished beams.

Tall arched windows administered light through thick velvet curtains.

The room seemed to be made of a special type of wood which had a dark ambience to it, making one feel like they were in the interior part of a tree.

Naturally, a king sized bed was present, its frame carved from an oak tree and a canopy draped in exquisite fabrics.

On the wall, there was a shelf holding books of different varieties, and a writing desk created out of solid wood just a few meters away from the window.

From quills to stacked parchments and inks, everything was present.

On the other end of the room, a slim rapier hung on its walls alongside a pair of half gloves.

Looking at the room, Si-eun couldn't believe that this flawless abode was the resting chambers of a scumbag.

But he knew better, he'd seen it in this body's memories after all, the former Azazel was a perfectionist, he'd always tried to look his best and uphold his title as a Duke's son but his temper got the better half of him.

'What a waste of character.' Si-eun couldn't help but quip inwardly.

With all said and done, well not quite since checking what the trickster god had given him was still left, he decided to take a shower first.

****

After taking a bath in what felt like the most magnificent bathroom he'd ever seen, he draped a light black tunic and a pair of gray pants which he tucked.

He walked towards the window but stopped abruptly like he'd forgotten something.

His face was filled with surprise as he walked back slowly, then stopped in front of a tall mirror.

A Narcissistic chuckle escaped his lips.

"Oh… ohoho, well ain't you a looker hmmm? Woah this ain't half bad like seriously I could give anybody a run for their money with a face like this."

As exaggerated as it sounded it was true, Azazel von astavore was easily one of the kingdom's most attractive male.

His bright red hair closely resembed his mother's while his icy blue eyes carried the same attractiveness as duke astavore, his ivory skin was white, not pale but white, perfect and untouched by scars, well save for the slight bruises his mother had gracefully gifted him.

His cheekbones were rigid and his jawline was sharp.

Even his physique was flawless, clearly he'd trained at least, even if he was a scumbag, such physique couldn't have been attained without an impressive level of dedication.

After admiring his new face to his satisfaction, he finally let go of the mirror, albeit reluctantly.

It was time to check what the trickster god had done to him.

If he remembered correctly this world's version of a system was a soul mirror, and everyone had access to theirs.

Something about the devs saying how overused the system title was.

So instead they created a similar counterpart, the soul mirror.

Like it was mentioned earlier, everyone had access to it, there was no such thing as a special soul mirror, even the protagonist had a soul mirror just like everyone else.

It was only after being chosen by a god that a person's soul mirror changed.

Rather than change, expanded would be a better word to use.

For instance the protagonist was chosen by Amun Rá, the sun god, after which his soul mirror expanded, since it contained the divinity of the sun god, the protagonist had access to the sun god's treasury where he could get items or legendary artifacts so long as he paid a suitable amount in divinity other than that and a few functions, it was rather same for every single person.

Also, unlike a system where the player could summon by shouting 'System or status screen.' The sound mirror required a specific phrase for activation.

"Let all that lies within unveil itself."

As soon as Si-eun uttered the phrase a translucent screen appeared before him displaying his information.

Seeing the description his soul mirror contained.

Si-eun couldn't help but let out a flurry of uncivilized curses at a certain trickster god.
