Chapter 2 - Ascension (1)

Playing with the bacon with my fork, a bunch of thoughts filled my head.

'This really isn't a dream'

For the past 2 days, I thought I would wake up from this dream or coma; however, nothing changed. It really seemed like I was back in the past, which caused me to be confused.

'Did my helmet malfunction or something?'

That was my theory.

My helmet had malfunctioned, and I was reliving my life to undo my regrets.

"Elias dear, are you sure you are alright?"

Looking up from my plate, I saw my mom's worried expression. I put on a smile and reassured her as I put a piece of bacon into my mouth.

"So Elias how is your job hunt going?" Looking to my otherside I saw a man wearing glasses with a neat appearance.

"Good, I got accepted at a decent-sized company," I replied

That part was true.

I had accepted a job offer from a company that I got. Around this time, it had been around 2 weeks since I had graduated from college, and I was finding a job in the tech job market.

"Is the pay good?"

"It's decent," I bit into my bacon. "I'll be able to move out pretty soon if everything goes well,"

"Good," my father nodded as a smile graced his face, something I hadn't seen in a while. Looking at it, a feeling of guilt began to build in me.

Previously, my dad had fights about this with me.

This was because I didn't want to work, and we fought daily till he kicked me out. As a result, I had to go into an apartment and find a job quickly. Due to that, I was bitter and didn't really bother talking to him.

After I finished everything, I got up "I'll be heading out for a bit," I said

"Where are you going?"

"Just walking," I replied to my mom

"Alright, be safe,"

Leaving the house, I started to walk as I remembered my previous 10 years of life.

I was a loser.

There wasn't really any way to put it.

I hated my job, and as a result, I chased something that I enjoyed and started to live paycheck to paycheck, sometimes not eating because I needed to pay rent.

For a long time, I blamed others for my actions; however, it didn't take me long to realize the truth, and that was I was a man-child. However, I had made a lot of mistakes, and I was afraid of them, so I ran away.

But now?

I didn't have to run.

As I walked, I stopped in front of a store before entering it. Looking around, I saw a bunch of people talking and taking boxes with excited grins.

The reason was pretty simple.

Today was the day the VIREX headset was released, and with it the brand new game called "Ascension Online"

What made this game so special was that it was the first ever VRMMORPG to hit the market, so it wasn't a surprise that people would flock to it. However, no one knew what the real value of this game truly was or rather, was going to be.

"Hi, I'm here to pick up an order. The name should be Elias Remington."

"Ah, give me a sec," The person behind the counter went to the back before coming back holding a box, and then putting it in a plastic bag.

The previous me had placed an order before the game was released, and due to my shock and paranoia, I didn't have a chance to pick it up. This also meant I was 2 days behind in the game; however, when I looked at the forums, I didn't seem like there was anything big just yet.

Picking it up, I tried to leave; however, some guy stepped in front of me, "Yo dude, I'll give you 2000 if you give-"

"Not interested,"

Passing by the guy, I quickly exited the store before heading home.

Entering the house, I noticed that my dad's shoes were gone, along with my mother's. Smiling at that, I walked inside before entering my room.

Quickly unpacking everything, I looked at the VR headset.

"Hello, again"

After I quickly set everything up, I laid back on my bed and put the helmet on my head. Pressing the button on the side of the helmet, a feeling of drowsiness overcame me as I closed my eyes and the world turned black.

Opening my eyes again, I stood in front of a giant square. In that square was a vibrant background with the title "Ascension Online"

Clicking on it, the image expanded, and the black area below me changed into a lush forest, and the area above me turned into a sky.

Suddenly, a pixy appeared in front of me.

"Hello traveller, and welcome to the world of Osnia," she said while stretching out her arms. "What do you go by?"

A sudden screen appeared in front of me as I looked at the keyboard.

[Noctis]

The panel changed in front of me again, showing me. Looking at the list of races I thought about what to choose.

───────⌈Race⌋───────

» Human

» Elf

» Dark Elf

» Undead

» Demon

» Orc

» Dwarf

» Fairy

» Dragonborn

» Vampire

──────────────────

I then chose [Human].

This was due to 2 reasons.

1 I was familiar with the quests around there terratory meaning I would have a faster progression

2. I needed to be a human to succeed in my plan, and it would be a lot smoother.

I fiddled with the settings a little bit by changing my hair from brown to black and my eyes from green to blue.

After I was happy with my character design, I flipped through the classes before selecting one.

[Assassin]{Common}

This was the same class I had last time, and I was familiar with both the quests and skills with this class. However, I needed to find a way to change my fighting style.

I then picked the three skills I wanted after I distributed my stats before the panel changed again.

"What city would you like to spawn in?"

Scrolling through the list before I selected the city I wanted.

[Glefver]

"Good luck on your journeys traveler!"

The area around me suddenly changed as I spawned in the centre of a giant temple. Looking around, I then opened my status screen.

Opening my inventory, I was met with a few basic items.

"Ha, I guess I need to find a good cloak," I muttered, looking at the items in my inventory. Depending on one's class, the 5 beginner items you get change. For example, mage class players get a staff, 3 magic stones and a magic cloak.

What I got was a singular dagger, 2 smoke bombs, a tattered cloak and a throwing knife.

With a sigh, I exited the cathedral, which was the spawn point of every nooby until they got their own place or rented a inn.

Renting an inn would be preferable, as if you died without a spawn point, you'd spawn back in the cathedral with nothing and minus half of your current level. Not only did you have to pay a fee after you spawned in. This is usually after your first death; however, it is expensive.

That's why players go to inns or buy their own property.

"Well, considering I'm dead broke right now, I should hurry up and get some coins before planning my next steps,"
