Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: Dami’s Birthday Surprise

The crisp autumn morning carried a hint of sweetness, as if the season itself knew something special was about to happen. Daewon walked down the quiet street, a bag slung over his shoulder, hands full of carefully wrapped packages. Inside, each one was chosen with thought - small gifts for his little sister, Kang Dami, who was turning twelve today.

He paused at the corner, taking a deep breath. His chest swelled with warmth. "She's growing up so fast," he muttered to himself, smiling softly.

At Aera's house, she was doing the same - tying ribbons around cupcakes, carefully placing candles on a small cake she had baked. Minji and Haneul had arrived earlier, helping with balloons, streamers, and the noisy excitement that only children could generate. Aera hummed quietly, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, thinking of Daewon. She wasn't sure if he would notice her efforts, but she hoped the soft glow of candles and laughter would bring him closer, even in small ways.

By noon, the house buzzed with life. Daewon had arrived early, carrying gifts and a warm smile, though his little sister immediately caught sight of him.

"Oppa! You're finally here!" Dami squealed, throwing herself into his arms. "Did you bring presents?"

Daewon laughed, hugging her back gently. "Of course. Happy Birthday, Dami." He handed her the neatly wrapped packages.

Her eyes sparkled as she tore through the paper. A set of art supplies, a plushie, and a small music box - things she had quietly wished for - were revealed. She gasped. "Oppa! You remembered everything!"

Daewon shrugged, trying to play it cool, though the warmth spreading through him made him grin like an idiot. "You're my little sister. Of course I remember."

Aera arrived just then, carrying the cake. Her soft voice carried through the room. "Happy Birthday, Dami! Make a wish!"

Dami's cheeks turned pink as she rushed to the table. Candles flickered, casting a golden glow over everyone gathered. The friends and family circled around, teasing her to blow out all the candles in one breath. She puffed her cheeks, concentrated, and whoosh! - all candles were gone in a single blow. Cheers erupted.

Daewon clapped, his eyes briefly meeting Aera's. She smiled warmly, the silent connection between them pulling at his heart. His chest tightened with a subtle, thrilling flutter.

After the cake, the friends organized a series of mini-games in the backyard. Water balloon toss, scavenger hunts, and a small relay race had everyone laughing. Daewon found himself paired with Aera for one game.

"Try not to drop it!" he whispered, glancing at her.

"I'll try," she said, biting her lip in concentration.

Their hands brushed while passing the balloon, and a spark of warmth shot through Daewon's arm. He froze slightly, then forced himself to focus. The moment was small, fleeting - yet it lingered in both of their minds, a secret current running between them.

Meanwhile, Dami's friends added their energy to the mix, playfully teasing, shouting, and collapsing in laughter. Minji nudged Daewon. "You're totally blushing."

"I'm not!" Daewon shot back, though his cheeks betrayed him.

Aera giggled softly beside him. "I think you are," she teased, her voice gentle but knowing.

The afternoon sun began to lower, casting long shadows across the yard. Daewon's mother stepped outside, holding a tray of refreshments. Her eyes softened as she watched her children. "It's good to see everyone so happy," she murmured. "Dami, this is a birthday to remember, isn't it?"

Dami nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! Oppa, Aera unnie, everyone - thank you!"

Daewon and Aera shared a glance, smiling faintly. There was something in the ease of family and friends - laughter and joy mingling - that made the heart feel full.

As evening approached, the group gathered for the final surprise: a small lantern release. Each person held a paper lantern, tiny flames flickering in the cooling breeze. Daewon handed one to Dami. "Make a wish," he said softly.

She nodded, her eyes shining. "I wish for everyone to be happy!" She released the lantern, and it floated into the sky, joining the others.

Aera released hers next to him, her fingers brushing his as she let go. Daewon felt the warmth linger, a subtle thrill that made him realize how much he cared for her, even without words. They watched the lanterns drift upward, carrying tiny wishes and quiet promises into the night sky.

The day ended with quiet moments. Dami, exhausted, curled up with her new plushie. Daewon and his mother tidied up the yard, sharing a smile.

"Thank you, Mom," he said softly. "For letting me do this. For everything."

She placed a hand on his shoulder. "You've grown into a thoughtful young man, Daewon. And you're not alone - you have family and friends who care. Remember that."

Aera lingered at the doorway, watching him with a shy smile, then quietly slipped away into the night after giving Dami one last hug.

Daewon, alone for a moment, looked at the sky, the last lanterns disappearing into the horizon. He thought of Aera, of the warmth of friends and family, and the quiet thrill of first love lingering in his chest.

The autumn night was calm, the air soft and fragrant. And in Haneul-dong, the bonds of family, friendship, and something a little more tender, quietly deepened.
