Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: Farewell to the Mountains

The morning sun filtered through the thin curtains of the dormitory cabins, casting long golden stripes across the wooden floors. The sounds of zippers, laughter, and low chatter filled the air as the students began packing their belongings. The trip to Mount Seorayeon was coming to an end, and the quiet excitement of returning home mingled with the sadness of leaving behind the mountains they had come to love.

Kang Daewon quietly folded his clothes, careful not to disturb his friends. Yoo Aera, already awake, was arranging her own bag, humming softly. The faint sound made him glance up, catching the subtle curve of her lips. His chest warmed, a small smile tugging at his own face.

Minji leaned against the wall, scrolling on her phone. "Don't look so serious, Daewon. You're glowing again."

He froze. "I'm not."

"You totally are," she teased. "Bet Aera unnie would say the same."

Aera shot him a small glance, her cheeks faintly pink, before pretending to focus on her bag.

The group gathered for the final breakfast outdoors, tables lined with the simple spread of bread, fruit, and warm tea. The mountains stretched beyond the campsite, trees glowing with early autumn colors. The crisp air was filled with birdsong, laughter, and the quiet hum of farewell.

During the meal, Daewon noticed subtle interactions between Aera and a few classmates. Aera's gentle teasing of Minji and her soft smile toward him made his heart skip, while he couldn't help noticing the playful jealousy flicker in Haneul's eyes.

He leaned closer to Aera, voice low. "You okay?"

She smiled softly. "Yeah. Just... ready to go home, I guess."

Daewon nodded, understanding the bittersweet feeling. They had shared so much these past few days - laughter, gentle touches, quiet walks, and the soft intimacy of simple moments - yet the trip was ending.

After breakfast, the group set off for a short hike along the final trail before returning to the buses. The path wound through the forest, leaves crunching underfoot, and occasionally opened to reveal breathtaking vistas of valleys below, rivers snaking through the hills, and the distant mountains still touched by mist.

Daewon walked beside Aera, their shoulders brushing occasionally. Neither spoke much; the silence was comfortable, filled with the shared memories of the past days.

At one point, the path split near a small clearing where sunlight filtered through the canopy. Daewon spotted a tiny wooden bridge over a clear stream, partially hidden by ferns.

"Look," he said softly, taking her hand and guiding her toward it.

Aera laughed lightly, the sound like wind chimes. "Another secret spot?"

"Just for us," he said with a small grin. "I thought we could remember it, even after the trip."

They lingered, watching the water ripple over smooth stones. Daewon skipped a stone, then handed the next one to Aera. Their fingers brushed, lingering a moment longer than necessary, and both felt the flutter of hearts - shy, warm, and entirely their own.

Back on the trail, the group continued, and Minji suggested a small scavenger hunt for the last hour before departure. Each pair had to find a certain type of leaf, a uniquely shaped rock, or a flower tucked away along the path.

Daewon and Aera teamed up naturally, laughing quietly as they searched. She pointed out a crimson leaf shaped like a heart, and he knelt to examine it.

"Perfect," she said softly. "It reminds me of the trip."

Daewon smiled faintly. "And it reminds me of you."

Aera froze, cheeks warming. "W-what?"

He chuckled, hiding the heat rising to his own face. "Nothing. Just... autumn leaves and all."

They continued walking, laughter and playful teasing intertwining with soft glances, creating small, heart-skipping moments that felt intimate yet unspoken.

The buses arrived sooner than expected, engines rumbling, dust rising, and the reality of the trip ending settling in. Students loaded their bags, said their goodbyes to the mountains, and climbed aboard.

Daewon and Aera sat together, their shoulders touching, the last view of Mount Seorayeon stretching behind them. The wind carried the scent of pine and earth through the bus windows, a gentle reminder of the memories they had created.

Minji nudged them, whispering, "Don't sit too close, you two. Everyone will notice."

Daewon glanced at her, then at Aera. She smiled softly, leaning a little closer. "Let them notice," she said quietly.

His heart skipped. He didn't respond, only catching her hand and holding it briefly, the simple touch saying more than words ever could.

The bus ride home was filled with chatter, sleepy heads resting against windows, and quiet reflections. Daewon and Aera shared small smiles, stolen glances, and the occasional soft laugh as they remembered moments from the trip - the hidden waterfall, the playful competitions, the warm morning by the lake.

As the town came into view, the bus slowed, and reality crept back. Their friends waved to parents waiting below, and Daewon felt a pang of sadness.

Aera leaned slightly against him, her hand brushing his arm. "I'll miss this," she said softly.

"Me too," he replied, voice low. "But... we'll have more days like this. Just us, friends, everything."

Her smile was quiet but bright. "I hope so."

The final moment came as they stepped off the bus. Hugs, laughter, and promises to meet soon filled the air. Daewon and Aera lingered at the edge, neither wanting to let go yet.

He glanced at her, a soft wind catching her hair. "See you tomorrow?"

She nodded, her smile gentle, heart-skipping. "Definitely."

As they parted, both turned back for one last glance, carrying the memories of the trip - the laughter, the secret paths, the heart-skipping moments - tucked carefully in their hearts.

The autumn breeze rustled through the streets of Haneul-dong, and though the trip had ended, the warmth of shared moments promised that their story was only beginning.
