A single-story structure with dark wood siding that had weathered to a deep gray, a stone chimney rising from one end, and windows that reflected the sunset like watchful eyes. A small porch with two chairs faced the forest. One narrow dirt road led in and out, the one they'd just traveled.

Liora's heart sank as she took it all in. This was it. Her new prison. Just without bars this time.
Thessian parked the SUV near the porch and turned off the engine. The sudden silence was deafening after three hours of road noise, no traffic sounds, no distant voices, no signs of civilization. Just the wind in the trees and the call of a bird somewhere in the forest.
