Chapter 42 - Chapter 41

Date: August 23, 2012 Location: Tony Ireland Stadium, Townsville. Event: U-19 World Cup - SEMI FINAL. Match: India U-19 vs. New Zealand U-19.

New Zealand was the surprise package of the tournament. They weren't flashy like the West Indies or aggressive like Pakistan. They were efficient. Led by Will Young (future Test player), they played percentage cricket. Their bowling attack, featuring Jacob Duffy (swing) and Ish Sodhi (leg-spin), was disciplined.

The Toss New Zealand won the toss and elected to Bat. "Put runs on the board in a semi-final," Will Young said.

New Zealand Innings The Indian bowlers were clinical. Ravikant Singh and Sandeep Sharma kept it tight. However, the Kiwis didn't collapse. They ground out runs. Cam Fletcher scored a gritty 53. New Zealand Total: 209/9 (50 Overs).

Target: 210. It wasn't a huge score, but in a knockout game, 210 can feel like 300 if you lose early wickets.

The Indian Chase

Over 1-10: History repeated itself. Prashant Chopra was bowled by a Jacob Duffy inswinger. 0/1. Unmukt Chand (Captain) looked nervous. He scratched around for 30 balls, scored 31, and then got out to a soft dismissal (caught at mid-off). India: 50/2.

The dressing room jittered. The ghost of the Pakistan collapse hovered.

Sai Walks In

Sai walked in at Number 4. He joined Baba Aparajith. Coach Arun's words echoed in his head: "The job is not done until the handshakes."

The Strategy

Sai marked his guard. Ish Sodhi (Leg Spinner) was bowling. Sodhi was tall. He got extra bounce.

[ANALYSIS]

Bowler: Ish Sodhi.

Trajectory: Loopy but dipping.

Risk: Top edge on the sweep.

Plan: Play straight. Use the depth of the crease.

Ball 1: Sodhi tossed it up. Sai didn't step out. He waited. He played it with soft hands to cover. [CLICK]. Dot ball.

The Partnership

Sai and Aparajith decided to kill the game with boredom. They didn't hit a boundary for 15 overs. They ran singles. The New Zealand fielders, usually energetic, started to droop. The lack of wickets was draining them.

Over 35: India: 140/2. Sai: 40 runs. Aparajith: 44 runs. Required Rate: 4.5 runs per over.

The Finishing Kick

When the New Zealand pacers returned, Sai shifted gears. He didn't want a last-over finish. He wanted to kill it early.

Over 40: Bowler: Jacob Duffy. Short ball. Sai was ready. [SYSTEM MODE: CONTROL] He rolled his wrists on the pull shot. FOUR through square leg.

Next ball. Full and wide. Sai opened the face. The Steer. FOUR through third man.

He reached his 50. But this time, there was no lapse in concentration. He looked at the scoreboard. 60 needed. He looked at Aparajith. "Let's finish it."

The Result

They accelerated smoothly. Aparajith got out for 44, but by then, the game was safe. Sai stayed till the end. He hit the winning runs—a cover drive off Sodhi.

India: 210/3. Sai Krishna: 68 Not Out.

India Won by 9 Runs (Duckworth-Lewis method adjusted slightly due to a brief rain delay, but effectively a comfortable chase).

Sai walked off the field. He took off his helmet. Coach Arun was waiting at the boundary rope. He didn't hug Sai. He just nodded. "Job done," Arun said. "Now, the Boss Fight."
