Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

"Revenge is just an emotional vent. After being bitten, I haven't had any emotional fluctuations whatsoever."

Emma Smith retreated to the corner of the stairs, but the monster kept slowly advancing.

Although they were no longer at a safe distance, she wanted to get to the bottom of this: 'since you have no emotions, why attack normal people so frantically?"

The blind Evil Seed let out a grotesque laugh. Its pitch-black sockets fixed dead on Emma Smith's direction as it issued a mocking chuckle.

"Because our physiological functions are completely destroyed. If we don't consume fresh meat, our bodies, which keep us active, will rot within a week. Now, do you understand?"

Emma Smith: "Yeah, I get it."

Watching the blind monster right in front of her, Emma Smith asked one final question: "You're this blind, how can you tell whether I'm an Evil Seed or not?"

The blind monster grinned, revealing bloody teeth, and laughed chillingly. As its facial muscles squeezed together, black blood gushed out from its eye sockets in pulses.

"Because your scent is very special, child."

With that, the blind Evil Seed lunged violently, snapping its jaws toward Emma Smith's cheek.

Emma Smith had nowhere to dodge.

Jessica Williams, who had been waiting for the right moment, swung the fire extinguisher down hard on the back of the monster's head. In an instant, red and white matter splattered everywhere.

The foul, stinking blood splashed onto Emma Smith's porcelain-white face. She raised her hand to wipe her cheek with the back of her hand, staring unblinkingly at the blind monster on the ground.

She waited three minutes to confirm the monster wouldn't get up again.

It seemed the back of the head was their weak point.

Emma Smith let out a breath: 'thanks."

Jessica Williams, holding the fire extinguisher, looked at Emma Smith in disbelief: 'sister, you've got guts. That thing was so close to you, and you stayed so calm."

"Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Besides, I had you with me."

Emma Smith glanced down the first-floor corridor. Fortunately, this was the only Evil Seed left on the first floor, and it had been dealt with.

"Let's escape the school. By now, the whole place is probably crawling with them." Jessica Williams said.

From a window on the first floor, Jessica Williams and Emma Smith looked outside. The entire campus was pitch black, save for the solar-powered streetlights. All the academic buildings were plunged into darkness.

Emma Smith thought it over carefully, then rejected the idea of fleeing the school.

Neither she nor Jessica Williams were local students. Aside from being somewhat familiar with the campus, they wouldn't know their way around at all once they stepped outside.

The area outside the school had most likely fallen already. Going out rashly, two people against swarms of high-IQ Evil Seeds, the odds of winning were slim to none.

Hiding in the school was safer, at least until they found a few more companions.

'so where do we sleep tonight?" Jessica Williams asked. surely not here. If the hundreds of electrified, smoking monsters upstairs regained their senses, they'd tear them to shreds. Their fate would be even worse than the blind monster's.

Emma Smith spoke helplessly: "Right here."

Jessica Williams: "Huh?"

"We're staying in the restroom." Emma Smith said seriously.

The blind monster said Evil Seeds identified normal humans by smell. The smell of the restroom should be enough to mask their scent.

Plus, those monsters likely wouldn't guess they hadn't left the building.

The first floor was a strategic location; they could jump out the window and run at any time.

A pained expression crossed Jessica Williams's face: "Don't do that to me. Even the dorm room next to the toilet is better than sleeping in the toilet. Besides, the toilet doesn't have an iron door; the dorm room does."

"Fine."

Emma Smith and Jessica Williams went to the dorm room next to the restroom. Surprisingly, when they opened the door, the room was quite clean. The occupants must have had afternoon classes and couldn't make it back after the virus broke out.

Inside, Jessica Williams opened a random cupboard and found two packs of instant Luos fen (river snail rice noodles).

Jessica Williams sighed, grabbing two metal bowls: "Let's eat first. Eating Luosifen with the smell of the toilet in the air... truly an immersive dining experience."

That night, neither Emma Smith nor Jessica Williams dared to sleep. They sat beneath the window, resting their backs against the wall.

"Can we survive this?"

Emma Smith stared at the ceiling, entering late-night emo mode.

Jessica Williams's eyes were heavy with sleep as she leaned on Emma Smith's shoulder: 'sooner or later, we all die. Surviving a bit longer just means we get to eat a couple more good meals."

Emma Smith sighed. Although disaster had struck, at least she didn't have to worry too much about her family.

She grew up in a single-parent household with only her mother. They had a two-story house in the countryside with a vegetable garden in the yard. The village was sparsely populated, but everyone was related, so they could support each other.

Now, she just needed to figure out how to escape safely to the secure zone.

...

In the early hours of the morning, Emma Smith's phone vibrated softly.

She pulled the duvet over her head and unlocked her phone.

It was a message from the Tianbei City Government:

Dear Citizens, due to the outbreak of an unknown virus in Tianbei City, all subways, trains, and airports have suspended operations. The city has requested assistance from the military. The military will assist government personnel in sealing off the Tianbei borders. Uninfected individuals should make their own way to Weilai Road in the East District of Tianbei. Medical personnel will conduct blood tests for arrivals. Those who pass will be relocated to the Central Hospital in the neighboring Changhe City.

Because the virus spreads rapidly and the infected are extremely dangerous, one month from now, the military will launch indiscriminate missile strikes on the city. Uninfected individuals are urged to reach the border within one month.
