Cassius Deveraux slowly came to the surface from the darkness that clouded his vision, as though he were coming out of deep water. Sensation began to return to different parts of his body, he started to feel the softness of the bed beneath him, the faint warmth of morning sunlight pressing against his eyelids and the distant chirping of the birds from his window.
What, birds?
His eyes snapped open.
He lay in a large and comfortable bed, the sheets smelled of lavender. A breeze blew past the window, stirring the lace white curtains. Outside, birds chirped as though his world were whole and unbroken.
Cassius stiffened.
This was not his own chambers. Nor was it the unknown ground of the fae land where he had collapsed. His heart thudded as his hand instinctively went to his face, the mask was no longer there.
