Chapter 37 - Reports and Decisions

The sun began to filter through the high windows of Duke Alaric's mansion, bathing the grand audience hall in a warm, golden light. Alex, EMI, and Aria sat before the duke, their expressions serious as they prepared to give their report. The air was thick with tension; the faint echoes of servants' footsteps barely disturbed the heavy silence.

"So, what did you find in the village?" asked the duke, his eyes fixed on EMI, who was leading the investigation.

EMI took a breath, ordering her thoughts before speaking.

"My lord, the situation is more serious than we anticipated. In the first village, we found clear traces of dark magic, but it was in the second where we had a direct encounter with a follower of the dark mage."

Duke Alaric interlaced his fingers on the table, his steel-gray eyes gleaming with interest.

"A follower? Speak, what happened?"

"He moved with inhuman speed, like a ninja," continued EMI, her voice firm. "But with an aura of madness. His extravagant appearance didn't match his lethality. He ambushed us so quickly we didn't even see where he came from until he was in front of us."

Alex remained silent, observing the exchange, while Aria added details:

"He threatened us, but I felt he was more interested in testing our abilities than in eliminating us. Almost like a game to him, though I'm sure he would have finished us if he wanted to."

The duke frowned, leaning forward.

"And you survived without casualties?"

Alex decided to intervene, his tone neutral but firm:

"Thanks to the techniques Aria taught me and EMI's magic, we managed to stay on the defensive. But... it wasn't enough to stop him. He escaped before we could get more information."

"What else did you discover?" asked the duke, his gaze moving between them.

EMI paused, exchanging a look with Aria before continuing.

"The village was completely deserted. No trace of the inhabitants, only evidence of a struggle and... marks indicating dark creatures were involved."

Aria added, her voice calm though her eyes betrayed concern:

"I believe those creatures are being used as pawns to spread chaos while the dark mage plans something much larger. This isn't random."

The duke nodded slowly, his fingers drumming on the table.

"If what you say is true, then the dark mage has already begun mobilizing his forces. This is more serious than I imagined."

A tense silence filled the hall until the duke stood, his authoritative voice resonating:

"We must act quickly. I will assign you additional resources and a team of trackers to assist in your investigation. But listen carefully: none of you are to confront this enemy directly without reinforcements. Understood?"

"Understood, my lord," the three replied in unison.

Upon leaving the hall, Alex felt Aria's hand gently rest on his arm. When he turned, she gave him a reassuring smile.

"You did well, Alex. Not everyone could keep their cool in that situation," she said softly.

"Thanks, but I'm not sure it was a good idea to hide the information," he replied, his gaze lowered.

EMI joined them, positioning herself on Alex's other side. Her tone was light, but her eyes betrayed worry.

"I feel bad too, but until we know if it's true or not, we have to stay silent."

As the three left the mansion, a sense of unease persisted. Although they had survived the encounter, they knew the worst was yet to come. The dark mage was making his move, and now it was up to them to figure out how to stop him before it was too late.

---

The sun's light barely penetrated the dense canopy of the Shadow Forest, plunging Alex, EMI, and Aria into a constant twilight that seemed to move and breathe with a life of its own. The twisted branches of the trees formed ominous silhouettes, and the silence was almost funereal, broken only by their cautious footsteps.

"This is too quiet..." murmured EMI, peering into the darkness.

"We should stay close," added Aria, summoning a small shadow creature that floated beside her, emitting a faint violet glow.

Alex, dressed in his signature suit that hid his face, stayed a little behind. He moved silently, his heart racing. He had his runes, but he knew he still wasn't on the same level as his companions.

"Alex," called EMI, looking at him over her shoulder. "Use your support technique if needed. Remember, you're part of the team."

He nodded, preparing his support rune, knowing it probably wouldn't help much.

After hours of searching, they discovered an ancient altar covered in dark inscriptions and symbols. Aria, intrigued, began analyzing it, while EMI carefully inspected the surroundings.

"I don't like this," said EMI, feeling a shiver run down her spine.

Suddenly, a deafening roar shattered the silence. A monstrous chimera, stitched together from parts of several beasts, emerged from the shadows. Its three heads—a wolf, a snake, and a dragon—spewed fire and venom, and its eyes glowed with a cursed red light.

"Get ready!" shouted EMI, raising her staff of light.

Aria summoned ten shadow creatures to contain it, but the beast's enormous size and ferocity quickly overwhelmed them.

"Alex, I need help to summon more!" exclaimed Aria, urgency in her gaze.

Alex activated his support technique, sending a wave of energy that amplified Aria's magical power.

"Give it everything you've got!" he shouted, sweat dripping down his forehead.

With her power enhanced, Aria summoned six more creatures that surrounded the chimera, slowing it down enough for EMI to act.

"My turn!" shouted EMI, channeling her light magic. A luminous sphere formed between her hands, glowing brighter and brighter until it blinded the beast.

"It's not enough!" warned Alex from behind.

But EMI refused to give up. She pushed further, unleashing a barrage of light rays that struck the creature, weakening it bit by bit. Finally, with a fierce cry, she released an explosion of radiant energy that reduced the chimera to ashes.

Exhausted but triumphant, EMI fell to her knees. Aria ran to her side as the summoned creatures slowly faded.

"Good work, EMI," said Aria with a mix of admiration and relief.

Alex approached and handed EMI a water bottle.

"You did the heavy lifting... I was just in the rear."

EMI gave him a tired smile.

"Don't be silly, Alex. Without your help, Aria couldn't have maintained her summons. We all played our part."

"But you're the true heroine here," murmured Alex, averting his gaze.

Aria watched him silently, noting the tension in his voice, but chose not to comment. There was something about Alex, something he hadn't discovered yet, but that would reveal itself in due time.

The group stood before the ruined altar, knowing this was only the beginning of a much greater battle.

---

Back at the camp, the atmosphere was heavier than ever. The flames of the campfire cast dancing shadows that seemed to whisper warnings. EMI studied the fragments of the altar's runes she had collected, while Aria sharpened her sword with methodical movements.

"That chimera wasn't natural," began EMI, breaking the silence. "It was corrupted, but also... enhanced. As if someone had experimented on it."

"Do you think it was the dark mage?" asked Alex, sitting by the fire.

"Or one of his followers, like Zarek," replied Aria without looking up from her sword. "But this proves one thing: they are active, and they are creating monsters. They're not just recruiting; they're forging weapons."

"Which means time is running out," concluded EMI, setting the fragments aside. "We can't wait for the duke to send more resources. We have to act now."

Alex looked at the fire, the flames reflecting in his eyes, hidden behind the mask.

"Act how? We barely handled one of his creatures, and he wasn't even present."

"That's why we won't confront him directly," explained EMI, her tone turning strategic. "But there is something we can do: sabotage."

Aria finally looked up, a spark of interest lighting her eyes.

"Sabotage?"

"Exactly," nodded EMI. "Those creatures don't appear out of nowhere. They need a place to be created, nurtured. If we can find that place, that monster factory, and destroy it..."

"...we'd pull a fang before the main battle," completed Alex, understanding. "But how do we find it?"

"The altar," said Aria, pointing to the fragments. "Those runes aren't just for rituals; some are navigation marks, magical coordinates. If I can decipher them..."

"They could lead us straight to their lair," finished EMI, a determined smile appearing on her face.

The plan was dangerous, almost suicidal. But it was better than waiting passively for the darkness to catch up.

Alex looked at his two companions, one with a brilliant, strategic mind, the other with a quiet strength and unshakable loyalty. For the first time, he didn't feel like a stranger dragged into their world. He felt like a pillar, a necessary part of the trio.

"So, when do we start?" he asked, his voice firmer than he expected.

EMI and Aria exchanged a look, and both smiled, a smile laden with danger, but also with renewed confidence.

"At dawn," said EMI. "We have a nest to burn."
