After the encounter with Zarek, the group returned to their temporary base on the outskirts of the village. The air was thick with tension, and the stranger's words still echoed in their minds.
"We can't just stay here doing nothing," said Aria, sharpening her sword by the fire. Her gaze was fixed on the flames, as if searching for answers in them.
EMI nodded, flipping through a rune book she had brought with her.
"That Zarek isn't just strong, he's intelligent. He was analyzing us, playing with us to gauge our capabilities."
Alex, still seated nearby in his suit, fiddled with a piece of wood. Though he appeared calm on the outside, his mind was working at full speed.
"Do you think he was just trying to scare us, or was he testing us for something bigger?"
EMI looked up from her book, thoughtful.
"Probably both. If the dark mage knows we're looking for him, he'll want to keep us at bay while he finishes whatever he's planning."
As they debated their next move, a black crow landed near the fire, a small note tied to its leg.
"A messenger?" asked Alex, cautiously approaching the bird.
Aria took the note and read it aloud:
"Come to the crossroads at dawn. There is something you must see. —Z."
"He has to be joking," growled Aria, crumpling the note tightly.
"It's obviously a trap—first he tells us to stay away, and now he wants us to find him?" added EMI, snapping her book shut.
Alex remained silent, observing the crow, which stared back at him with bright eyes. Finally, he spoke:
"Trap or not, I think we should go. If Zarek really wants us to follow him, this could be our chance to learn something."
"Have you lost your mind?" Aria looked at him as if he had grown two heads. "That guy could wipe us out in a second."
"It's risky, but Alex is right," said EMI after a moment. "If we wait too long, we might lose any advantage we have."
After a heated debate, the group decided to accept the invitation.
At dawn, they arrived at the designated place: a junction where three paths met, surrounded by a dense forest. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the whisper of the wind through the trees.
"This screams 'trap'," murmured Alex, adjusting his collar.
"Stay alert," replied Aria, her hand on her sword hilt.
Suddenly, a figure appeared in the center of the crossroads, emerging from the shadows as if he had been there all along. It was Zarek, with his usual smile.
"I'm glad you came. You're braver than I thought."
"What do you want?" asked EMI, crossing her arms.
Zarek let out a soft chuckle.
"Relax. I didn't come to fight today. I came to… show you something."
With a wave of his hand, the ground trembled and an illusory image appeared before them. It showed a vast cavern lit by a dark, eerie light, where hundreds of hooded figures were performing what looked like a massive ritual.
"This is the future that approaches," said Zarek, his tone serious. "My master is gathering power. And if you do nothing, this will be your downfall."
"Why are you showing us this?" asked Alex, narrowing his eyes.
Zarek smiled again.
"Let's just say I enjoy watching people struggle against the inevitable. Besides, my master appreciates worthy challenges."
Before they could respond, Zarek vanished once more, leaving the floating image to fade after a few moments.
"This makes no sense," murmured Aria, looking at the spot where Zarek had been. "Why would he give us such valuable information?"
"Because he's playing with us," replied EMI, clenching her fists. "He's using us for something we don't yet understand."
Alex remained quiet, his eyes fixed on the crossroads. Something about Zarek's words unsettled him deeply, though he couldn't pinpoint why.
"We need to report this to the Duke… and prepare for the worst," he finally said.
With the image of the cavern etched in their minds, the group returned to the village, uncertain but more determined than ever, knowing things would only get more dangerous from here.
---
The walk back to the village was silent, each absorbed in their own thoughts. The dawn painted the sky with orange and pink hues, a brutal contrast to the darkness of the vision Zarek had shown them.
"How did you know it was an illusion and not a real vision?" Aria suddenly asked, turning to EMI.
"The energy," EMI replied without hesitation. "Powerful illusions leave a… static aftertaste in the air. Like the echo of thunder without a storm. What he showed had power, but not the weight of immediate reality. Still…"
"Still, it could be real," Alex completed. "Just somewhere else, or at another time."
"Exactly," nodded EMI. "He showed us a possibility, perhaps even a plan. The cavern, the followers… it all seemed too specific to be mere deception."
"What puzzles me," Aria interjected, her voice low, "is his attitude. Why would a loyal follower give us such a clue? Unless…"
"…unless he isn't as loyal as he seems," concluded Alex, feeling the pieces begin to fit. "Or he's playing his own game."
EMI stopped in her tracks, making the others halt as well.
"That could be it. Divide and conquer is an ancient tactic. If he can make us doubt our enemies' unity, or if he can sow distrust within his own ranks… that would give him a personal advantage."
"A potential traitor, then," murmured Aria, a spark of hope igniting in her eyes. "That changes things."
"Let's not count on it yet," warned Alex. "It could just be another layer of the game. But it's something we should remember."
---
Back at their temporary shelter, the group sat around the dying embers of the campfire. The crow's note lay on a flat stone as they continued to think about what to do.
"We'll report to the Duke, as Alex said," declared EMI, making the decision aloud. "But we can't wait for him to send reinforcements or give orders. That vision, real or not, showed a large-scale ritual. If that's happening, time is a luxury we don't have."
"What do you suggest?" asked Aria.
"Active investigation," replied EMI. "Let's use the cavern clue. Do you remember anything distinctive about the place in the illusion? Rock formations, minerals, something that could help us locate it geographically?"
Alex closed his eyes, forcing his memory. The image had been brief, but vivid.
"There were crystals," he said slowly. "Large, black crystals jutting from the floor and ceiling, like stalagmites and stalactites. They gleamed with that same dark purple hue we see in the corrupted runes."
"Shadow crystal," murmured Aria. "It's only found in the Karth Depths. That's several days' journey, toward the eastern mountains."
EMI nodded, a line of action forming in her mind.
"Then that's our next destination. But we can't go in blind. We need more information about the terrain, the dangers."
"My family has maps of that region," offered Aria. "Ancient maps, from when the mines were still active. They might show hidden entrances or uncommon caverns."
"Perfect," said EMI. "While you get those, Alex and I will prepare equipment and provisions. We leave in two days."
Alex noted the use of "Alex and I," and the fact that Aria didn't object. A new dynamic was forming, a recognition of his emerging skills.
"What if it's a trap?" asked Alex, voicing the elephant in the room. "If Zarek wants us to go there specifically."
"Then we'll be prepared for a trap," replied EMI with iron determination. "But if we ignore this and it turns out to be real, the cost will be incalculable. Sometimes, calculated risk is the only option."
Aria extended her hand, placing it over the note.
"I agree. But we go with our eyes open. Let's trust each other, but distrust everything else."
Alex placed his hand on top of hers, and EMI completed the gesture. A silent pact, sealed under the brightening sky.
