A few days later, Helena showed up at our house to hash out the engagement details.
Protocol dictated that Genevieve should greet her, but Helena shut that down fast. "I want to see Bella," she stated bluntly.
Richard and Genevieve went rigid with shock.
Marriage talks had always been strictly between parents and family elders—no exceptions.
Someone demanding to meet the younger generation directly? It was completely unthinkable.
Their expressions soured with barely contained offense.
But Helena wouldn't budge. Since they couldn't refuse her outright, they grudgingly sent a servant to fetch me.
I walked into the main hall moments later.
Helena's pointed look at Richard and Genevieve said everything. The couple reluctantly stood and made their exit.
As Genevieve passed me, she caught my eye and whispered, "Stay with Her Highness for now. I'll be back shortly."
I completely ignored her, which left her seething as she walked away.
