Chapter 24 - In the dungeon

Ryan slowly opened his eyes. He felt his body lying on the ground. Gently adjusting himself, he felt the pain running through his system and grunted. He raised his head and looked around, carefully examining his surroundings.

It was not a cave. It looked more like a dungeon, with blue flames hanging on the walls. A few meters separated each flame, and there were dozens of them lining the walls. Straight ahead, there was a path that seemed to lead to nowhere.

Ryan: Where am I?

A still and eerie silence filled the place. Then, a voice ripped through the silence from the darkness.

Alvarox: Welcome back, Mart Force.

The sound sent a shock through Ryan. He suddenly remembered what had happened.

Ryan: You...

Alvarox: Yes. It's me.

Ryan tried to respond, but his tongue felt heavy, almost as if he could barely speak.

Alvarox: You won't be able to escape from here. You are trapped.

Ryan: Where are they?

Alvarox: Your friends? They must be somewhere here.

Ryan shouted loudly.

Ryan: Where are they?!

Alvarox: Oh, your friends? They must be somewhere around here. Hearing my voice too, I'm sure they are somewhere in this place. This is my kind of world, and yours too, Ryan. You know we were greatly alike.

Ryan: Shut up! No. We are different.

Alvarox: Are we? The darkness... the still atmosphere... Come on, Ryan. You know somewhere deep inside of you, there is this kind of world that wants to consume the darkness.

Ryan: Shut it! And what do you want from us?

Alvarox: Oh, you know... your energies and every possible power existing in this dimension. Unfortunately , you have nothing left to give. But Marthadon has a lot to offer, and my grand plan will make sure it gives everything.

Alvarox: While you rot here, I will be very busy. And I don't want any party poopers, so I'll make this place fun for you. You might even forget about Marthadon. The things you see on these walls shoots at different times.

A blast suddenly shot toward Ryan, as if to emphasize Alvarox's words.

Ryan grunted loudly. The pain was excruciating. He could feel every bit of it, but Alvarox continued speaking as if nothing had happened.

Alvarox: Find your way out.

His voice echoed loudly through the darkness that enveloped the dungeon.

Alvarox: Before you get killed, remember that your life depends on you. The game is on. If you want to live, you will need every bit of energy left in you and I think Marthadon would also need that

His voice carried a taunting tone.

Another blast attacked.

Ryan tasted blood in his throat. The pain was extreme.

Ryan wasn't the only one going through this. His friends were facing the same thing.

He stepped forward, taking a weak step. He had to get out of there.

Another shot came in fast. He moved slightly backward to dodge it, then stepped forward again.

Back at the Fortress...

Hazel's eyes remained glued to the screen, lost in deep thought as her mind raced. Suddenly, she connected to the signal.

Everything went silent at first.

Their first step toward saving them had finally begun.

The victory gave her a sudden pause as the activity on her system intensified. The situation inside the dungeon appeared on the large screen.

The quartet were still in the dungeon, taking every step as if chained with flames they walked through the eerie darkness of the dungeon

A tear slipped from Hazel's eye.

Kylock: Find a way to connect to them?

Hazel: I'm on it.

Her hands moved across the device with incredible speed, driven by pure emotional urgency.

Kylock: They seem to be walking in circles.

Hazel: Where they are, it's an illusion. The dark energy blasting them is draining their strength and keeping them from walking in the right direction.

She continued working on the device.

Kylock: Then if we want to get them out of there, we need to stop the blasts first. Then we can focus on communicating with them.

Hazel: I can do both.

The quartet staggered through the darkness. Their feet were damp as they walked. The excruciating pain was crushing their bodies. Even their tongues were too weak to yell out in pain.

They kept taking steps as if their legs were chained with flames.

Then, in the darkness, they saw a faint light coming from an electrical source.

The flames around them suddenly went out.

Only the faint light remained ahead.

Then, a voice echoed through the darkness like a sound of hope.

Kylock: Guys, if you can hear me, follow my energy. I know you are weak, but I'm sure the little strength you have left is enough to survive. My energy can't last long here. Just follow me.

Even though they were separated individually, they moved in sync. Their hearts were connected.

They took each step, following the faint light in the darkness. Each step felt weak and weary.

After taking a few steps forward, the atmosphere began to change.

It wasn't a faint light anymore.

It was getting brighter.

The light gazed upon their skin.

They took another step, and suddenly, they felt as though they were falling from the skies of Marthadon.

They were already out.

A large teleportation portal had opened beneath them, and they fell through it unconscious.

Immediately, a sudden pause passed through the atmosphere, like a surge of relief.

Ryan blinked, shifting slightly under the green light. His eyes adjusted to the brightness of the Fortress.

He steadied himself, removing a device from his wrist that looked like a drip pipe, while the others were also beginning to wake up.

Hazel came over to them.

Hazel: Gently, guys.

A voice spoke from behind.

Kylock: Are you okay?

Ely: Just standing up from the bed. Yup. Just the headaches and a bit of emptiness.

Hazel: You guys have been through a lot. Don't stress yourselves.

Ryan: You saved our lives.

Alicia: That guy was bent on killing us.

Alvarox: He would have done more than that. Thank goodness we were fast enough.

Iriel: What's wrong? I feel empty.

Every one of their Marthadonian features had vanished.

Kylock and Hazel exchanged a suspicious look.

The quartet immediately noticed that something was wrong.

Alicia: What?

Hazel: Um... your powers it gone

Alicia: Yeah, we know.

Kylock: This time, it's not just seventy five percent of it.

Ely: What?

He was shocked.

Hazel: and unfortunately,I don't know how long the remaining energy keeping you alive will last.

Ryan: Shrap…
