The doctor kept talking, explaining things about rest, medicine, and what to watch out for after a miscarriage. His voice sounded far away, like it was a floating whisper that was inconsequential. I couldn't focus on any of it. All I could see was Allen's face. He looked completely pale, like someone had sucked the life out of him. His eyes were full of pain, and betrayal. The knowledge that I was the reason for his current situation made everything worse.
When the doctor finally left and closed the door behind him, the room went quiet. There was no distraction now, it was just me and Allen. I swallowed hard and tried to speak up.
"Allen I…"
He put his hand up fast, stopping me from completing my sentence. His eyes were empty and I could see him struggling with his feelings. I waited, and waited, until he finally spoke. His voice sounded hollow and heavy.
"You were… you were pregnant?" His voice cracked on the last word.
