Chapter 16 - Shadows of Choice

The morning unfolded with a spark of surprise. Lila after being ignored by Luca, decided not to think too much about it.

However, because several employees had seen her step out of his car. Because they recognized Kevin as THE KEVIN, the whispers began almost immediately. A new rumor spread through the halls: Lila had a man. And suddenly, the gossip shifted. The whispers about her and Luca quieted, replaced by speculation about Kevin.

In the executive lounge, two employees whispered over coffee.

"Did you see her today? She stepped out of his car like it was nothing."

"Kevin, right? I heard he's some big shot now. Maybe she's finally dating someone."

"Good for her. At least it proves she's not just obsessed with Luca."

The words carried down the hallways, echoing in corners, weaving into conversations. Lila felt the shift as soon as she walked around the building. The stares were different now—curious, speculative, but less hostile. For once, the rumor seemed to work in her favor. Yet, it left her unsettled.

That was because the silence between her and Luca still was on her mind and with each hour grew heavier, charged with unspoken words and unresolved emotions. Lila was left wondering about Kevin's invitation, about Luca's reaction, about the shifting tides of gossip.

Later that day, Lila called Pearl and Amara during their break. She didn't wait for them to ask—she told them directly.

"I ran into Kevin today," she began. "From college. He's… bigger than I thought. People recognized him. He gave me a ride to work, and he asked me to dinner."

Pearl's eyes widened, her tone playful. "Dinner? That sounds exciting. You should go. Why not? He's successful, charming, and clearly interested. You've been working nonstop, Lila. Maybe it's time to let yourself have some fun."

Amara, however, leaned forward, her voice softer, more maternal. "Be careful, Lila. Success and charm don't always mean sincerity. Think about what you want, not just what looks good. Don't let curiosity lead you into something that might hurt you. You've worked too hard to let someone distract you from your path."

Lila sighed, torn between their perspectives. "I don't know. Part of me is curious. But another part… feels like it would complicate things."

Pearl smiled. "Complicated can be fun. You've been so focused on work. Maybe it's time to let yourself feel something."

Amara shook her head gently. "Or maybe it's time to protect your heart. You don't need to rush into anything."

Their words lingered in her mind long after the call ended.

Meanwhile, Luca was at Elion Enterprises, finalizing another deal. His composure was intact, but inside, emotions churned. He had heard the rumors—Lila being dropped off by Kevin, the whispers of her possibly dating someone. It unsettled him in ways he didn't want to admit.

James noticed his distraction, leaning back with a smirk. "You're quiet today. What's going on?"

Luca shook his head, his voice clipped. "Nothing. Just work."

Yuki studied him carefully, his tone calm but probing. "It's not nothing. You heard the rumors, didn't you?"

Luca's jaw tightened. "I don't care about rumors."

James leaned forward, his voice more serious now. "You care about her, though. That's the problem. You can pretend it's just work, but we see it. You're not yourself when it comes to her."

Yuki added, "You've been staring at your phone, scrolling through her pictures. You've been distracted in meetings. This isn't just about gossip. It's about how you feel."

Luca exhaled sharply, frustration in his voice. "She's free to do what she wants. Kevin is… successful. Maybe he's better for her. Maybe I should just stay out of it."

James shook his head. "Better for her? That's not the point. The point is, do you want her? Because if you do, you can't just walk away every time it gets complicated."

Yuki leaned forward, his voice steady. "You're scared. Scared of admitting it, scared of losing control. But feelings don't wait for permission. They're already there."

Luca rubbed his temples, his silence heavy. He didn't want to admit it, but his friends were right. The emotions were there, undeniable, pressing against the walls he had built.

---

Later that evening, Lila sat at her desk, staring at Kevin's card. The whispers in the office had shifted, the stares had changed, and Luca's silence weighed on her. She thought about Pearl's excitement, Amara's caution, and her own conflicted heart.

She placed the card in her drawer, closing it firmly. For now, she would wait. She wasn't ready to decide. Not yet.

Across town, Luca sat alone in his office, the city lights glowing outside his window. He thought about the rumors, about Kevin, about Lila's smile. His friends' words echoed in his mind, louder than the silence he had carried all day.

For the first time, he admitted it to himself—not out loud, not to anyone else, but in the quiet of his own heart. He cared. More than he wanted to. More than he could ignore. But he still didn't talk to her nor text her that night.

The empire was steady on the surface, but beneath it, hearts were shifting, choices loomed, and the truth was pressing harder than ever.

---

The next morning, the atmosphere at Elion Enterprises was restless. The rumor about Kevin had spread beyond the walls of the building, reaching even the ears of executives at Elion Global Holdings. His name carried weight, and the fact that Lila had been seen with him only added fuel to speculation.

Some whispered that she was moving up in the world, aligning herself with someone powerful. Others suggested she was finally stepping away from the shadow of Luca. For Lila, the whispers were noise—but Luca's silence was deafening.

At her desk, Lila stared at Kevin's card again. Pearl's playful encouragement echoed in her mind, urging her to take a chance. Amara's caution pressed against her heart, reminding her of the risks.

She whispered to herself, "Do I want to know what dinner with Kevin means? Or am I just trying to distract myself from Luca?"

Her phone buzzed. It was Nia, checking in.

"Girl, I heard the gossip," Nia said with a laugh. "Kevin? Really? That's a big name. People are talking."

Lila sighed. "I didn't plan for this. It just happened."

Nia's voice softened. "Sometimes the best things happen that way. But don't let the noise decide for you. Decide for yourself."

Meanwhile, Luca sat with James and Yuki again. The conversation was heavier this time, stretching longer, peeling back layers he had tried to keep hidden.

James leaned forward, his tone serious. "You're spiraling, man. You can't keep pretending this doesn't matter. You care about her. Admit it."

Luca rubbed his temples. "She's free to do what she wants. Kevin is… successful. Maybe he's better for her. Maybe I should just let it go."

Yuki shook his head. "That's cowardice. You're not afraid of Kevin. You're afraid of yourself—afraid of what it means if you admit you want her. You've built walls around your feelings, but they're cracking."

James added, "You don't have to confess to the world. But you need to stop lying to yourself. Because if you keep silent, someone else will step in. And then it'll be too late."

Luca's silence stretched. He finally muttered, "I don't know if I can give her what she deserves."

Yuki's voice was firm. "Then let her decide. Don't make the choice for her by disappearing,Dumbass."

That evening, Lila sat in her new apartment, the city lights glowing outside her window. She thought about Kevin's invitation, about Luca's silence, about the shifting tides of gossip.

Her phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn't Kevin. It was Luca.

She hesitated before answering.

"Hey," his voice came, calm but strained. "I just wanted to check in. How was your day?"

The conversation was simple, almost ordinary—work updates, small jokes, quiet pauses. But beneath the words was something heavier, something neither dared to name.

When they finally said goodnight, Lila lay awake, her heart racing. She dreamed again—this time of Luca standing beside her, reaching for her hand, whispering her name before leaning in to kiss her.

She woke with a start, her cheeks flushed, her heart pounding.
