Chapter 13 - The Empire Cracks

The morning erupted with chaos.

An internal audit report had leaked overnight, splashed across every major business outlet. Elion Enterprises was under scrutiny for irregularities in its International Relations department. Because the contracts were part of a joint partnership with Elion Global Holdings, representatives from both companies crowded into the boardroom. The board demanded answers. The press demanded accountability.

And Lila Grace was summoned.

The executive conference room was packed. Celeste sat at the head of the table, her expression calm but razor-sharp. Luca stood beside her, jaw tight. Department heads from both companies whispered nervously. The atmosphere was electric.

Celeste leaned forward. "We need clarity. Now."

Marcus flipped through the audit papers. "The numbers don't add up. Someone manipulated the contracts."

A board member frowned. "Who signed off on these files?"

Another added, "Legal should have caught this."

All eyes turned to Lila.

She straightened her shoulders. "I wasn't assigned to International Relations. But I'll review the contracts immediately."

Celeste nodded once. "Do it. And report back by noon."

Lila retreated to her office, stacks of files spread across her desk. Helena from Marketing appeared at the door, arms crossed. She lingered for a moment, watching Lila scribble notes.

"Careful," Helena said finally. "They're setting you up."

Lila paused, looking up. "Then I'll prove them wrong."

Helena stepped inside, lowering her voice. "You know how this place works. People are already whispering. They'll say you missed something even if you didn't."

Lila leaned back in her chair. "Then I'll make sure there's nothing to miss."

Helena sighed. "Just… be careful. Dorian's watching."

Hours passed. Lila dug through contracts, tracing signatures, timestamps, and metadata. Dorian, the Director of Risk, stopped by, his presence filling the doorway.

"You're walking into fire," he said quietly.

Lila didn't look up. "I don't burn easily."

Dorian stepped closer, his gaze sharp. "You're thorough. I'll give you that. But thorough doesn't always win here. Politics does."

She met his eyes. "Then I'll play both."

Dorian smirked. "We'll see."

Marcus poked his head in later, carrying a folder. He dropped it on her desk with a sigh. "You sure about this?"

"I don't have a choice," Lila said, scanning the folder.

Marcus leaned against the desk. "You always have a choice. Just make sure it's the right one. If you take this on, you'll be in the spotlight. And not everyone wants you there."

Lila closed the folder. "Then I'll shine anyway."

Zara slipped into the office with coffee, setting it down beside her. "They're whispering again. Saying you're only here because of Celeste."

Lila took the cup, inhaling the steam. "Let them whisper. I'll give them something to talk about."

Zara sat across from her. "It's not fair. You're working harder than anyone."

Lila smiled faintly. "Fair doesn't win wars. Proof does."

By mid-morning, Celeste herself appeared, her heels clicking against the marble floor. She closed the door behind her.

"You don't have to carry this alone," she said softly.

"I do," Lila replied. "If I don't, they'll never stop questioning me."

Celeste studied her for a long moment. "You remind me of myself at your age. Fierce. Determined. But don't let pride blind you. Sometimes strength is knowing when to lean."

Lila's voice was steady. "Then I'll lean on the truth."

Celeste's eyes softened. "Then show them who you are."

Meanwhile, Luca sat in his office, phone in hand. James and Yuki lounged nearby, watching him pace.

"You're brooding again," James teased, tossing a stress ball in the air.

"I'm thinking," Luca muttered.

"About her," Yuki said knowingly, sipping his tea.

"She's in the middle of a storm. And she's carrying it alone," Luca admitted, his voice low.

James leaned forward. "Then stand beside her."

"Or stand behind her," Yuki added. "That's what she needs."

Luca stared at his phone, the unsent message glowing back at him. He slipped it into his pocket. "I'll be there."

By noon, Lila returned to the boardroom with her findings. The room fell silent as she laid out the evidence.

"The irregularities weren't missed," she said firmly. "They were hidden. Someone altered the files after they left Legal."

A board member leaned forward. "Do you have proof?"

"Yes," Lila replied. "Metadata shows edits from the account of Adrian Hale, Finance Division."

Gasps filled the room.

Adrian stood abruptly, his face pale. "That's impossible. I wasn't even here that week."

"The system doesn't lie," Lila said evenly.

Celeste's voice cut through the tension. "Enough. Adrian, you're suspended pending investigation."

After the meeting, Luca found Lila in the hallway. He walked beside her in silence for a moment before speaking.

"You were brilliant," he said quietly.

Lila slowed her pace. "I did my job."

He looked at her. "You did more than that. You saved both companies from a scandal."

She stopped, turning to face him, he looked down "It wasn't your fault. You didn't put me here. I chose to step in."

Luca's jaw tightened. "Still. I should have seen it sooner."

"You can't see everything," Lila said. "That's why we're a team."

For a moment, silence stretched between them, heavy but not hostile.

That evening, Lila called Pearl and Amara. They crowded around the phone, voices overlapping.

"You sounded exhausted," Pearl said.

"I am," Lila admitted.

Amara chimed in. "But you did it. You proved them wrong."

Pearl asked gently, "Do you still care what Luca thinks?"

Lila hesitated. "I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't."

Amara laughed. "That's not an answer."

Lila smiled faintly. "It's the only one I have."

Later that night, Luca waited outside her building. When she stepped out, he straightened.

"Dinner?" he asked simply.

She blinked. "Now?"

"Unless you have plans."

She hesitated, then nodded. "Alright."

Dinner was quiet at first. They sat across from each other, the hum of the bistro filling the silence. Luca asked about her sisters, and Lila told him about Pearl's new obsession with cooking shows and Amara's endless energy for social causes. He listened, smiling faintly.

"You talk about them like they're your anchor," he said.

"They are," Lila replied. "Without them, I'd lose myself."

He nodded slowly. "I get that. James and Yuki keep me sane. Even when they drive me crazy."

Lila laughed softly. "I can imagine."

The conversation drifted to lighter topics—travel, favorite books, the absurdity of corporate jargon. They teased each other gently, the tension easing into something warmer but still restrained.

When they left the bistro, the city lights shimmered across the river. Luca walked beside her, hands in his pockets.

"You know," he said, "for all the chaos today, you handled it better than anyone else could have."

Lila glanced at him. "I handled it because I had to. Not because I wanted to."

He nodded. "And that's why you'll keep winning."

She smiled faintly, but didn't reply. They walked on in silence, the night air cool around them.

It wasn't a declaration. It wasn't forgiveness. But it was something.

And for the first time since she had stepped into Celeste's empire, Lila Grace felt steady again.
